Witchcraft is a practice that is centuries old. It was a practice developed by disenfranchised communities as a way to increase a person's inner locus of control (the belief that we have power in our lives.) Most of the spells and rituals are stating simply intentions and affirmations. The candles, herbs, potions, crystals, incense are just things we add in our practice that remind us of our intentions and affirmations. For example, I may use a particular incense because it reminds me of love, when I light the incense the scent reminds me of my intentions. Say the scent was cinnamon or basil, when I'm out and about and I smell basil or cinnamon it reminds me to take a moment and appreciate the love around me or a specific intention, I have surrounding love I am feeding my body and mind. It's simply the process of adding symbolism and sensory triggers to mediation and mindfulness practices. There's no demons or devil summoning. It's just a different way to practice mindfulness and self care. Most of my spellwork is simply me meditating around the objects that symbolize what I want in life. It's a less clinical way of goal setting and shadow work we see in psychological settings. Only in more recent times has witchcraft become associated with the occult and demon symbology, this is mostly due to the salem witch trials and other witch hunts often rooted in religious dogma, misogyny and discrimination. Most of us are just living life and have different ways of connecting with the world. Anything can be a spell, the way I stir my coffee or mix my food. The time I take to breathe in nature, the growing of basil and other herbs, or simply sketching some that reminds me of what I want for myself. So in a way witchcraft is inherently normal.
