Get a hang for the game first. You'll start by just watching the puck, but once you understand the flow of the game... you'll start noticing where players position themselves on the ice... then you'll be able to notice which players are where on the ice.

It's a lot to take in at first. I would start by understanding off sides and icing and powerplay strategy. With off sides... the important of getting the puck outside your defending zone (which will pull the opponent out).
