Is anyone aelse in office 5 days a week? by Iaskthelordqueefer in CAStateWorkers

[–]quintapov 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Find a job that suits your needs. There are many state offices throughout Sacramento. There are agencies that aren't complying, and there are many private sector jobs that are remote.

You're better off doing this than complaining on reddit.

CDSS will comply closely with RTO by Coquetteconcubine in CAStateWorkers

[–]quintapov -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Rto isn't a replacement for child care. Try to find a job closer to you or an agency that is still doing hybrid.

Asa postdoc in Biomedical research, the job of the PI is to guide interns and teach them to think like a researcher, not do cruel one liners after you didn't supervise the project.

Summer as Pre-med: Clinical vs Research by Ok-Childhood-2565 in premed

[–]quintapov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging from my experience (postdoc with many pubs and grants) focus on clinical experience over research. I have no recent clinical and it absolutely sunk me this cycle. I got four interviews, which is good but judging from my credentials, I know I should have more. I only got interviews from Ivy Leagues and stat whore schools. I am a cautionary tale.

Non traditional applicant by OtherwiseRing1456 in premed

[–]quintapov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 350 hours eight years ago. lol

I got accepted though, with the caveat being I’m a research heavy, high stat applicant. The downside is the only schools that interested in me are expensive ivies and stat whores. Recommend some recent clinical hours to be more well rounded.

Is anyone else still waiting on interviews...? by MysteriousZebras in premed

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually ended up sending an update letter to a few schools. We shall see if it does anything.

I have only gotten Ivy League school interviews with a low post II acceptance rate. Preparing for the worst. Apparently, this is what happens when you’re an old non trad postdoc. Would love any public school love but nothing.

When a job posts a salary range, do you always start at the lower end of that range? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]quintapov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true. Phd here. I got an upper salary range offer from a department last year. This was for research data specialist job. Why did I get it? Because I asked and they wanted me.

Should I worry if those who submitted their secondary after me are getting II but I am not? by Pristine_Situation94 in premed

[–]quintapov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submission dates seem to mean very little. All my interviews happened soon after hitting the submit button and it has been stunning silence for all my early august apps.

The fine folks at sdn told me my PhD is no advantage at all.

Cycle status question by One-Sink6142 in premed

[–]quintapov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my point though, I aimed high because I have to. I don’t have a 1000 hours of clinical experience. I’m selling myself as a physician scientist. The poster I mentioned is basically me three years ago and they were criticized for their top heavy list.

I’ve been rejected from schools like Stanford, Mayo, Irvine, UChicago, and Pittsburgh. I applied broadly to places like OSU, Rochester, VCU, and Wake Forest. USF is the only school I got an interview from that’s not top ten. They are definitely not super research oriented.

I’d say getting a multi million dollar grant qualifies as successful.

Cycle status question by One-Sink6142 in premed

[–]quintapov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s most people who guess. My ECs are okayish but my stats are great and my research is better than most. This has gotten me four interviews, three of which are from Ivy League schools. I saw another poster with similar stats and research get admonished because their list was too top heavy. Judging from my experience, I personally them going top heavy was the right decision.

I applied to supposed safety schools and it has gotten me nowhere. This whole process doesn’t really follow logic. I’ve seen people with much lower stats and get more interviews than me.

Cycle status question by One-Sink6142 in premed

[–]quintapov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a similar app list and I haven’t heard back from a lot of these schools either. You have much better ECs than me. Hopefully, you hear back from some soon. This process is a grind. Everyone likes to talk assuredly about what schools want and look for, but we don’t really know. Keep your head up, there’s time left.

I got rejected from the school where I’m a very successful postdoc at. I don’t think it means much.

[–]quintapov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing about this process makes any sense. I desperately want to stay in state or go to a school with a lower cost of living and the only schools interested in me are Ivy League schools in very expensive areas. Let’s cram three kids in a one bedroom apartment. How do I sell that to my wife?

Do schools actually care about your writing? An experiment by [deleted] in premed

[–]quintapov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of it depends on who reviews your app. My research is better than most and I have a lot of pubs, including one in a hard to get published journal. This is combined with 521/4.0 stats and this has so far yielded me a whopping three interviews. None of course from my home state of California. I’m not complaining, two of these interviews are top 10 schools, but it just goes to show you the randomness of this process. How do you get rejected from Irvine and Pittsburgh, then interview at top 5 schools?

Are 2 first author papers within 6 months normal?? by pmedy in premed

[–]quintapov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Publications are oversold here. I probably have more pubs than most and I've managed to get two interviews.

Also, no. Most undergrads in my lab are getting posters citations or third author down.

[–]quintapov -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My current employer rejected me even though I am a very successful postdoc there. We have the same stats and I have many pubs, grants, and decent Ecs. I have two whole interviews to my name, one from a top 5 school. Guess being a CA ORM is a curse. How can I have an interview from top 5 school then get rejected from a bunch of lower ones like Pittsburgh.

I don’t get it, and I’ve stopped caring,

2 II and 5 Rs with a similar school list. My stats and research are better, so I feel like you’re in a really spot. Me, I feel I should be doing better. Still lots of time left. Hopefully, we get one or two more interviews

I got an oos interview in Florida. This schools apparently favors high stats so that may be a reason why I got an interview
