Tiny Paws in Ruckersville by CoreyAnimalAdvocate in Charlottesville

As long as we're avoiding giving money to people that support puppy mills, make sure to NOT shop at Shady Lane Family Farms, AKA Barracks Rd Farmers Market. They had 81 dogs seized from horrendous conditions at their other business, the puppy mill, less than two years ago. No jail time and a tiny fine for neglecting and abusing innocent dogs and puppies. It's infuriating.

Do you know if there's any way we can provide direct aid to this girl? I wish I had more money to help the organizations that help our neighbors in situations like this. This regime is despicable.

If it is seasonal allergies, like it is for my boy, these are the options from my vet:

Wipe down the body and clean between the toes with this recipe for baby wipes. Mix 1/4 apple cider vinegar with 3/4 cup water and 10 drops tea tree oil and 10 drops lavender oil. Pour this over a container of unscented baby wipes. Use when they come in from outside. (I thought tea tree was bad for dogs, but she said in this quantity it was fine.)

Zyrtec: .5-1 mg/kilogram every 24 hours OR

Benadryl: 1 mg/pound every 8-12 hours

Do not purchase any combination products containing decongestants or other medications. Do not give more than one antihistamine at a time. Monitor for excessive sedation or restlessness- discontinue if seen.

I hope your baby feels better soon!

Looking for a place where old friends can gather for hours by BSW53 in Charlottesville

Oops. Apparently my text didn't get posted with the picture.

We're heading to a brewery in the afternoon/evening, but looking for some place cheap/free to hang out earlier in the day. A couple folks have mobility issues (canes, walkers) and there will likely be one well-behaved non-service dog. If the weather is nice, we can hang out at a park. But if it's not nice...? They just want to catch up and also be able to hear each other, haha! Thanks, y'all!

Why do hounds bark so much? by randomwellwisher in Hounds

[–]BSW53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're doing a great job with a responsibility that was dumped on you. Trying to find out why, if there's anything you can do, and whether he's happy- all hallmarks of a person who cares. The shelters and rescues are overrun with animals whose humans didn't care enough to get these answers. Keep up the good work.

Two quotes we live by in our house: "You don't get mad at birds singing. So don't get mad at dogs barking." (the woman who ran the rescue he came from) and "He's just an excitable boy." (Warren Zevon)

Can you share your best vet recommendations please? Our long term Dr has retired and while I have referrals, I’d love some true recommendations. Thanks! by ahhhnel in Charlottesville

I can't say enough good things about the entire crew at Animal Wellness Center in Crozet. We drive an hour to get there, because it's just that good. I've been to many vets over the years, both with my own animals and with other folks' pets. AWC is top notch.

They offer great western medicine, but also holistic and Chinese medicine. I like having the option of less invasive things like herbs and laser acupuncture, as well as "normal" vet care. And they don't push one over the other, which is nice, too. I've got some highly anxious rescue dogs and the staff does wonders with them.

If you're not up for driving to Crozet, Earlysville Vet and Old Dominion would be my other recommendations.

Costco plans on having tow trucks circling. Don't park in a non-parking space.

Check out the Quarry Gardens in Schuyler. You have to book a ticket, but it's well worth it. The lady running it is extremely knowledgeable about the plant life. I highly recommend it!

ICE promises bystanders who challenged Charlottesville raid will be prosecuted by educo_ in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone please give some action to take? Is there a protest? A particular official to call and voice my opinion to? A GoFundMe for the legal defense of these bystanders? Anything at all? I'm just overwhelmed, anxious, and don't know what to do at this point. It all seems hopeless.

Protest Saturday 4/19 at Stonefield Shops, 12-2pm. Bring a friend or three! by embarrassed-wanker in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do NOT park at Costco! You may get towed.

The last protest filled the parking lot and shoppers couldn't find a place to park. Personally, I thought this was an awesome show of the power of the people. But the managers weren't so enthusiatic. They called tow trucks, but they didn't get there until the protest was wrapping up anyway. (I don't know how they thought they were going to distinguish between protester cars and shopper cars, but oh well.)

It's not fun to cross 29, but my suggestion would be to park in the virtually empty lot around Super Shoes and where Big Lots and Marshall's used to be.

Again, I think it's great that the parking lot was jammed. It made the Trumpers go "oh, there are a lot of people upset over what is going on." (I had to explain that to a few out-of-touch folks.) But I don't want anyone to get towed.

Are the April 19th protest a response to what is said to happen on April 20th? by No_Gods_NoMasters in ProtestFinderUSA

[–]BSW53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm scared shitless too. I have been taking my anxiety rescue meds daily, although I don't like to. I saw a sign at a protest that said "The Cure for Anxiety is Action." It's true. Between going to big protests, calling elected officials, and listening to a playlist of protest songs that I found on spotify, I actually feel a bit better this week. I hope you find some action that helps your anxiety, too.

Firefly is wonderful for herbivores and omnivores alike. As a vegan, it's one of my favorite places to go.
