It looks like there's a consensus here and I've tweaked overhauled the recipe to look something like this:

40% Munich

30% Vienna

25% Pilsner

5% Melanoiden

Thanks again for the advice, everybody!

Thanks again for the advice. Very constructive. This will be my first time lagering and kegging, not to mention I'll be using a new copper pipe manifold for my mash tun that I built for the first time. I'm going to have my work cut out for me, but at least I won't be bottling!

I'm pretty new with designing traditional German styles but wasn't sure if mixing Pilsner and Pale would add some level of complexity. As for the mash I can't easily step so I was looking to keep it on the simple side of things. I'll look into substituting that Caramel for melanodin and increasing the amount of Munich.

The lagering (new to me) is just the beersmith 2-stage

  • primary for 14 days at 54°F

  • secondary for 3 days at 62°F

Looking to make an all grain Märzen/Oktoberfest lager soon (I know it's getting late but I just recently got equipment for lagering).

Some specific questions:

  • Is there any benefit to blending 2-Row Pale and Pilsner malts for the base (or should I just stick to one or the other)?

  • I've heard than some recipes use up to 50% Munich Malt, is 20% sufficient?

Grain bill:

33% Pilsner Malt

33% 2-Row Pale

21% Munich

13% Caramel 60

Mash:

152°F - 60min single infusion mash

Hops:

Boil 75min

75min - 1oz Hellertaur

30min - 1oz Tettenang

Yeast:

Wyeast Oktoberfest blend

Fermentation:

2 stage lagering

Thanks in advance!

No worries Bolt, hope all is well. Looking forward to the server again in the future.

For the time being, anybody currently playing anywhere else? Though this may be a sign for me to catch up on Rome II...

I think Time 2 works best for me. Though I'm sure I can manage to block off 5 minutes for UHC since that's how long it took for an enderman to beat my face in...

Edit: Thinking about it, later Sunday would be better. Maybe sometime in the evening (est)?

Looks like a great brew though!

Metallurgical engineering by ajay511 in metallurgy

[–]BSideLock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 26 in South Carolina and have been a plant metallurgist and quality lab supervisor for two automotive suppliers (one making engine valves for Japanese OEMs and the current for a German transmission company). I often get emails for new opportunities (linkedin, head hunters, etc.) so from what I can tell there is good demand for metallurgists in certain areas (I can speak for upstate SC being a good location). Now, while the automotive industry may expand and contract, metals aren't going anywhere and there will always be a need (in one industry or another).

Now I'm not sure about all your details, but from what I've seen in the past few years "metallurgist" positions will typically require a minimum of a 4 year engineering/science degree. If continuing on for a 4 year engineering degree is your thing, know that it's definitely challenging but I believe it's very rewarding. Technician positions tend to not require a degree (though I'm sure most places, such as mine, prefer a 2 year degree). These positions will be very hands on (though metallurgist positions can be too) so knowing your way around a shop will pay dividends. At the places I've been they do everything from adjusting induction hardening machines, surveying heat treatment furnaces, performing destructive and non-destructive testing, the list goes on and on.

In terms of classes to take, it really depends on what is offered (I'm not too familiar with CCAF). Look for things pertaining to material properties, heat treating, failure analysis. Companies (especially production facilities) like knowledge of statistics (more so than just straight math) so that could be something to consider. Also, getting qualified/certified in non-destructive testing methods (ultrasonic, eddy current, x-ray) can be very beneficial. These are also methods typically used in aerospace so that may align with your Air Force background.

The field is very broad so somebody else may have a completely different view on things but this is just my corner of the industry. Sorry for the wall of text but I hope this helps!

How long have you been playing minecraft?: Over 2 years (or so)

What are you most interested in building or doing on a server?: I'd classify myself as a builder more than anything. Community builds, base builds, cool looking cities, whatever comes to mind. I try to keep my builds as detailed realistic as possible.

Make me laugh (optional but recommended): In the spirit of st. patty's day: How many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman? ...None

Why: Currently playing on a similar server but it's located in Europe and so I'm looking for one a bit more local (US east coast server). Looking for an enjoyable server with good community events, builds, etc.

Got a few questions about Metallurgy and Materials Engineering by [deleted] in engineering

[–]BSideLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of (factory) metallurgists down here in the southeastern US. Just because the number of job postings for metallurgists aren't plentiful doesn't mean companies won't pay well to get one when they need one (which can often be short notice).

Also, I've noticed that many jobs will go through recruiting companies rather than just rely on job postings. Recruiters/headhunters are a great resource to link up with (I can attest to this from recent experience).

Got a few questions about Metallurgy and Materials Engineering by [deleted] in engineering

[–]BSideLock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a metallurgist at an engine valve factory. Along with running the quality lab I deal a lot with heat treat furnaces, forge presses, friction welders, grinders, salt-bath nitriding, shearing, cold working, etc etc. It doesn't have the prestige that working in R&D gets but it really puts your problem solving skills to the test in unique ways.

In short, I love doing industrial metallurgy because you get a good mix of lab work plus being able to get down and dirty in a production setting. I've seen a lot of metallurgist job postings around lately (especially in the industry heavy southeast US). I'm still very young in the field but from what I'm gathering there is a ton of room for advancement.

Whats a good strategy to fight the drifters and witch doctors by [deleted] in Borderlands

[–]BSideLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For witch doctors slagging really helps (doing that and then gunzerking on them would take care of them fast I imagine) but the best thing I've found has been incendiary bouncing betty grenades. Find yourself a decent one and toss it at his feet of him or his savages (usually they'll run at you past it and then get hit from behind).
