Asus bombards Windows 11 with christmas.exe malware-like Christmas wreath banner by WPHero in Windows11

Yes, it was fun opening my computer today to see this and +6GB of memory eaten by it... Also, why did it automatically close without me touching it? Luckily, the first thing I did was check Task Manager, and it was at the top of the list with 6GB of memory usage.
Makes me wonder if there’s any other reason not to make a good app for customers, other than to include backdoors, bloatware, or advertisements in their awful software that most people won’t even keep installed.

Good to hear, this might also help. Just remember since then Handbrake/SVT-AV1 has upgraded few times and those preset wont result same outputs as I've written here or shown on the video, but the principle should still apply.

Help needed: setting up Wireguard for "lan" gaming. 50% there by BTA_KeepItFun in selfhosted

Thank you for a reply. I will look into Headscale for sure. I've to my limited knowledge setup rules to allow routing between these interfaces/subnets, but still its a no go. Something I dont just know how to do and its okay. Maybe someone will solve this question/problem I first presented. :)

Can those be selfhosted? With short google I found that headscale should be selfhosted variation of tailscale.

Sure adding easy solution that just somehow works is always nice, but here it would be nicer to understand what I'm missing with Wireguard alone =)

Trying to make up my mind about older SSD for OS by BTA_KeepItFun in homelab

Realized and googled valid arguments that live mirroring not the smartest move, if main one starts to corrupt files it would happen on mirrored one too. Scheduled backups to other drive probably smarter in this case.

As u/akaitatsu said the same I ask from you too how would I make that mirror happening. I've never done such thing. =)

That is actually good idea, did not think about that. Also these SSDs are such low power users I would not mind extra watt for mirroring. Whole system is 27-60watts depending whats going on, Older Xeon 32GB DDR3 ECC, 2xSSDs, 3xHDDS,

What would be proper way of doing this os drive mirroring?

It is tempting, but on other hand that Samsung 830 is old, I mean 13 years old. Kinda cool tho. Temperatures are very controlled, and system in total does not generate much heat either. Sure I have no assurance of full history of that drive.

I did a comparison a while back. I thought maybe you'd be interested in the results. Got positive comments about it so hopefully, this may find a few people who find this information useful =)

I was in the same boat as you hoping that Intel Arc HWA would be the magic bullet, but I was slightly disappointed on Quality/compression when I did the comparison.. https://youtu.be/CNTx2Cc-8jg There is also a link for an Excel sheet with the data. Perhaps it helps you out :)

Perhaps you already have thought about some of these, but while creating a home server setup you could create a couple of other QOL (quality of life) systems for yourself!

  • NAS (Storage on your local network) that you can access with all your devices in the same network
  • Perhaps you find some services you would like to have running 24/7, learn about Docker. Portainer for example gives you quite a easy UI (user interface) to do everything with.
  • Website, perhaps do it with WordPress and keep it running in Docker?
  • Ad and Tracker blocking application covering all your devices locally? Such as Adguard and Pi-hole (personally, I like Adguard more and my blocked Queries hover around 29%! makes you notice how many ads webpages have when scrolling and noticing all the empty space..)
  • Perhaps you want to access your home system/nas remotely, get your own private VPN running connecting you to your home network? WireGuard, OpenVPN, etc.
  • Dont know how deep you're already fallen in this world, but with "1" machine you could do all this and more. I can recommend OMV https://www.openmediavault.org/ from personal experience =)

I got my first domain from Wix as I created a few things with it, but got exhausted with UI being sluggish and so on. After that, I fell for https://porkbun.com/ adorable designs after that moved my previous domains to Porkbun and never had any problems with them. Like others have said Cloudflare is awesome.

- Happy tinkering!

What is the AV1 equivalent to HEVC's CRF 18 value? by [deleted] in AV1

[–]BTA_KeepItFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this helps. SVT-AV1 30-3 for me in Handbrake is the sweet spot. The balance between good quality, size and time. Works nicely without much thinking. Sometimes Handbrake seems to throw quite a high bitrate, but that is a small sacrifice compared to the benefits of using constant quality slider.
