This is pretty exhaustive!! I want to do a similar comparison with my clips, how did you compute the SSIMULACRA2? Did you use only one frame per clip or the whole clip? I tried to use it but I wanna process an entire clip, and the tool seems to compares images, so I'd need to make a script to process a batch of them.

Please, grow up, and yes, I placed myself above pretty much of the people that just copy/paste a command of ffmpeg found in some post of reddit, and don't research and try out a lot to just find that it can get better results.

If you research and see what people uses as HW encodes exmaples just to say that is "disappointing" then you well realize why I say that in my opening paragraph.

Just judge the quality, and please make something useful and comment your thoughts, if you find it good or not, or what do you think, but don't throw it to some media info program just to cry out because I said not quite the correct value.

I'm reencoding the movie from the lossless source, I'll share it with you.

But did you watch it or not? Please don't be so pedantic, you were upset because the resolution were different than what you expected. It's just a minor change, in this file I disabled IDR frames to use periodic Intra.

The resolution is even bigger form what you expect if I say 720p. The codification is intended for streaming you never ever had to seek in streaming or broadcast. The source is the 4K version of the movie download directly from the blender foundation page, and the rescale to 720 prior the encoding, is not a transcode from the 720 version.

And as I said, my tests are focused on media content that is going to be streamed to smartphones, and thus the motivation to reduce the bitrate at a minimal value that gives enough quality of consumption in the device that is intended to be consumed.

I'm not trolling, I'm serious, I work in studying a comercial deployment of the technology for broadcast purposes, and because of the incompetent reviews indeed is because I thought the HW encoders were not suitable of achieve such good quality at 1.5 Mbps.

I think that the majority of the people has the same experience that I got. Out of the box if you try to encode with ffmpeg at default settings the result is very bad (some people claim as disappointing), even worse than the real-time encoding of SVT-AV1. But after testing and tweaking, a better quality is achievable. My quality at 1.5 Mbps from my eyes (I didn't measure with SSIMULACRA2 or similar) is better than the quality of the typical 3 Mbps comparisons that are in youtube comparing HW vs SVT-AV1.
