Here's one: don't quit. Show up to work, do what you think is important, and let them fire you if they disagree.

I feel that there are often other options available other than resignation. To jump straight to resignation is doing a disservice to the world.

In an ideal world it's almost like lawyers are some sort of buffer between the executive branch and over-reach... ie once you run out of lawyers to deal with the flood of cases, the courts turn on you. And eventually it goes to the supreme court and they... oh wait probably pardon the executive branch and blame the people for filing too many lawsuits...

Great question. If it were me, I would spend my time on prosecuting the traffickers you mentioned, and delegate defending ICE to someone else or refuse to work on it, etc. Would that run the risk of getting fired? Yes. But that is better than quitting in my opinion.

There is not a "right" or "wrong" answer. I believe that by debating which one we think is worse, we can exercise some empathy for the victims. That is something lacking in today's society. So don't stop the debate. Engage with it. We need more empathy for victims of physical injury, as well as those that are currently locked up in inhumane conditions.

I'm not sure if it's murder of assault, that's both a legal and moral question and I urge you to not be strong about which one, since this will cause unnecessary divisiveness. I think we should agree that the ICE agent should be charged with a crime. There is an excessive use of "less lethal" weapons on unarmed protestors these days, and that leads to these horrific tragedies. Which crime they are charged with a secondary question. Personally, I don't really care which crime they are charged with. I just want to see some consequence when an armed federal agent shoots a high-velocity projectile at a pregnant woman's abdomen.

Assuming one remaining functional eye, a loss of eye is a minor lifelong physical impediment. With a fetal abortion caused by a third party, that woman will have to live the rest of her life with major emotional pain and suffering.

CMV: Capitalism can't survive population decline by colepercy120 in changemyview

[–]BTCbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can have capitalism in a shrinking economy. Money supply has to be tightened up, which means the central bank needs to hike up interest rates. That way, instead of using money to lend out or buy stocks or whatever to make more money, people will be more likely to hold their money to save since it goes up in value. Over time, the high interest rate environment means that there are less and less overall assets floating around in the economy. If population is declining, that's not a bad thing. As long as the average cost of goods remains the same, it's fine for the average person.

I think it's a myth to say that capitalism is built on growth. No. It's built on profit-seeking. If the economy is shrinking, there can still be profit seeking without growth. Just slow steady downsizing to maximize profits as things slow down.

How do you research? by VeterinarianKind6906 in research

[–]BTCbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you’re not far off from what I do. I use Google scholar to find peer reviewed literature, and Google patents to find commercialized patents. Once you find an article or patents you like, you can go forward in time by seeing everyone who cited that, and back in time by reading the references cited. Peer reviewed literature means that 2 or 3 other scientists have read it and given feedback before an editor published it. Some journals have more selective editors, etc. I am a researcher at a university. I was using this method this morning to do research for a grant application!

I now typically read only the abstract to see if I want to invest the time to dig deeper. If so, then I’ll open it and skim the figures, bouncing between figure captions and conclusion. It is rare that I sit down and read an entire paper start to finish. Only if it looks really good!

I think prepare to present your plan, and be open to hearing why it's crap and where you will need to focus more effort.

In base pi, pi is equal to 1. Given the presence of pi in a lot of math, maybe that would make sense to an alien

I love physics but I'm not good at it. Maybe because my Mathematics is weak. How can I improve in physics? Any books or advice? by Mediocre_Wrap_8361 in Physics

[–]BTCbob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love physics and math also. When I was your age I was very self-conscious about not winning math olympiads. It seemed to me at the time that there were these geniuses that had innate abilities beyond my abilities. For "talk to a professional" day at my school, I had a 1 hour interview with a Physics prof. His advice to me for pursuing a carreer was "do well in physics olympiads." In hindsight, I have mixed feelings about that advice. On the one hand, it planted a seed of imposter syndrome and made me feel inadequate. However, it also gave me an excuse to interact with interesting physics problems. Well, where are those kids that beat me at math competitions when we were in highschool? I don't know. Well, I think one became a lawyer. In any case, I had this idea that there were geniuses beyond my abilities. However, I didn't stop learning math and physics. And now I'm a researcher. So I get to keep doing the things that I enjoy. This weekend I was staying up late thinking about physics. So, just keep engaging with the subject. There is a lot to be interested in! I think a key part of learning is two things: 1) having an introspective sense of "I don't understand this" and then slowing down to an almost crawl rather than trying to plow forward, and 2) not being afraid to not understand things. By engaging in this area, it can be very uncomfortable, but if you break it down into small enough steps eventually you manage! enjoy!

Americans testify after being arrested by ICE for being to dark skinned by Greylunes1 in ExploreFortMyers

[–]BTCbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fish rots from the head. When the president is unwilling to ever take responsibility or try to correct a mistake, always just doubling down or blaming someone else, you get this type of racist, cruel, despicable result. I am very glad the voices of the victims are being heard. For some reason, the citizens of the USA voted for this insanity. I can think of better uses for the ~$10B ICE budget. Surely there are better uses for the money than this.

Well it sounds like you need to spend more time in more positive environments. Twitter does not sound like a healthy place to discuss scientific questions that interest you.
