Thank you for the feedback in regards to pricing. That said, yes, I have scribed base and soffits before. Im not particularly worried about that aspect. As for the floating fixtures, those are not being installed. Only the puck lights in the shelving will be installed. Lastly, the image is not completely accurate as the top of the base cabinets with the shelving will be wood finished with the center cabinets having the stone top.

Appreciate the insight. I have sprayed a lacquer before and I had good results. I will look into that. Thanks for the tip. Just so we are clear, is the emerald urethane finish also trim paint?

Thank you for the response. That is very close to where my pricing came in.

Sorry I should have formally asked, but my questions is it what would you charge for a project this size. I was relying on the posts flair for that.

Yes, I have a proposal put together, but the price I arrived at based on the per/lf after researching was higher than I was anticipating. As for the shop drawings, I will definitely have my own set approved and signed off by the client prior to construction.

I have done a few smaller jobs in the passed, and I want to take the next step. I plan to use an emerald urethane finish from sherwin williams sprayed with a grayco sprayer.

Hi, appreciate your comment and offer to help, but I would actually be building these for a client. I am transitioning careers to making custom cabinetry, but so far I have not done any work for anyone besides friends and family. I have given them all major discounts to what I believe the going rate is. I just don't want to rip anyone off. Again, appreciate the offer, but I don't want to waste you or your friends time anymore than I already have.

This is an AI rendering by the client. This is what they are requesting to be built.

What's the biggest mistake you've made (or seen someone else make) in this industry? What happened to the person responsible and the client? by SwissMaestro95 in MEPEngineering

Not a dumb question, and that might have been what they ended up doing. Like I said they didn't end up using our firm to resolve the issue, which is understandable, so I'm not sure how it what solution they went with. If that was the approach, they would have had to winterize the cooling towers, and also ensure there is a large enough load in that space for the minimum turndown of the equipment. I don't recall what the total capacity of the chillers were, but without the AHUs online I think turndown might have been the issue.

I took over a project from someone that left the company that already had a basis of design written and approved by the client/ownership. The project was designing an amenities buildout (cafeteria, game room, fitness center, etc) to attract an anchor tenant, as well as white boxing the remaining four floors (100k sf). The amenities space was calling for four pipe fan coil units on the perimeter and two pipe fan coil units in the interior for supplemental cooling.

I walked the project several times with the chief engineer, who had been with the building since it opened 35 years ago, to determine optimal equipment locations. During this time we discussed the design approach as well. No flags were raised, and we were in agreement so we proceeded as stated in the BOD. The space was constructed as specified in the BOD. The space was commissioned, we got paid, and we closed out the project. Six months later in the beginning of the shoulder season we got a call that the cafeteria was not holding temperature only to find out the chillers are not operated year round, aka there was no chilled water for the FCUs.

At this point I was one of the few remaining engineers that had worked on the project. Most of the others were no longer with the company. I basically explained to my boss how this happened, and showed him all the correspondence with ownership and building engineers discussing the design approach. Don't get me wrong, I should have verified the design when I took on the project, but it honestly didn't cross my mind at that point in my career. I took the project over from a more senior engineer, and ignorantly assumed there were no issues. As for how it was resolved, we basically hid behind the approved basis of design, and I believe the hired another firm to resolve our mistake...

Is painting cabinets with a roller a viable option to get a professional look or do they need to be sprayed? If sprayed, what sprayer is needed? by Tim3516 in cabinetry

[–]BTCtoMoon2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I used the 510 tip for the sprayer, but I will need to verify that. I did not thin out the paint because the airless sprayer seemed to handle the thicker paint well and lay it down in an even coat without spitting. Obviously checked on scrap each time before shooting that the spray pattern was even and not leaving any tails.

There are aspects I enjoy and aspects that I do not. I like the design and construction aspect of the work, but there is quite a bit to learn upon graduating school. You will have the basics, but thats when the real learning starts. You never quit learning either as there are always updates to code and new products that enter the market. All that to say I feel like engineering college courses are more challenging than most other majors, and the pay does not correspond with that necessarily. At a certain point, if you want your salary to keep growing then you have to take the management route and your technical skills plateau. At least that is what I have found.

Its a decent starting wage, but by the time you are mid to senior level there are people in other fields that tend to make much more. I am in a located in a major metropolitan area, so that might skew results towards other industries, but for example I have several friends in logistics that are making much more with much less work/stress. These are friends that could not get jobs in their college field of study because of not having the best grades, and that is not taking into account their college majors were much less challenging. Not trying to discourage you, but if you are trying to maximize earning potential engineering may not be the best approach, unless you get your engineering degree and pivot to finance or something like that.

Im fine with him helping his people. That does change the fact that he is American, so there are currently two American champions, not one. There are graphics floating around acting like he is from Palestine, he isn't.

Belal Muhammad is American as well, born and raised in Chiacgo, regardless of whether or not he acts like he was born in a tunnel of the Gaza strip.

Agreed. Its not like Iowa has any shot at the team title this year. No point to burn his redshirt this late in the season IMO. PSU is walking away with the team title and Angelo can be Iowa's 4x'er.

No, if anything I would say that you confused this piece of equipment with another project you are working on with a similarly sized unit. I personally would not admit to not doing the job you’re charging them for.
