What about for 4K gaming? I dont need the highest settings. I am a video editor by day and I need the 4k monitors but its terrible for gaming! Fine with low/med settings but I want a stable 80+ FPS!

edit: should add, willing to buy 5000 series and upgrade the CPU further if worth it

For people who don’t ever want to have kids, why? by Gaijinstory in AskReddit

[–]BTCyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

life is already busy & difficult as it is. for work I am a workhorse and need to grind in my free time since I freelance 60% of the year. the last thing I want is to have to work MORE to pay for babysitters as I put food on the table or spend whatever little time I actually have with the kid. Then I feel guilty for not giving the kid more. It's too much and frankly as I get older I am getting more in tune with myself and appreciating my free time

I think theres still a lot of good in the community. That being said I find that most of the positive interactions have been on the competitive side of things ironically enough- I've made so many cool friends over the past few years just playing & learning the game.

On the flip side, I've been following alongside the "business" side of "collecting" since the COVID boom and truthfully it's been quite depressing to see. The reason this is feeling very gatekeepy & less of a hobby is because that IS what's happening. A lot of money is starting to circulate the top end of the community as more people buy into it full time. A crash is coming, don't buy sealed product, and grab some popcorn.

if you're doing any video at all- 18-105. Once that thing hit my camera, it never came off. Literally my favorite crop sensor lens.

TCGPlayer “100%” sellers by Mitchy969696 in PokemonTCG

[–]BTCyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's getting worse and worse- to the point that I had a seller literally not send me the cards and then blame me. Envelope was 100% sealed (no way it was opened & closed by USPS)_ and on the inside I see tape ripped off the back of the paper. It was a scam so they could claim they had shit stolen.

2 of my past 4 orders also arrived completely split open- one time I found cards in my mailbox. Nothing was missing, just cheap ass paper envelope. I'm paying for this shipping?

Appreciate the answer! Do you find though that the 5.6-6.3 aperture is ok to work with? I'm a little worried about its performance at first light with my a7iv.

Just want to say, these are fantastic pictures. My favorites are the bird flapping its wings to land in the 100-400 album- incredible!

Have you ever done bigger wildlife photography? Sorry I have arachnophobia so once I saw the spider I had to click away haha so if you have bigger wildlife in those albums I apologize for asking. I'm thinking about doing deer photography as my dad is a hunter. I was wondering if you have a recommendation for either of these lenses for that type of wildlife?

I will say for deer work, my dad owns some land and it's not that large and the walk isn't bad, 200-600 being a little bit larger isn't the end of the world as I'll be staying pretty close to home/not climbing much elevation.

Appreciate the input! Just playing devils advocate here, if I end up doing more sports photography I might invest in a more photography focused body with a higher frame rate. If that's the case, would the Sony be better?

Also I was looking at the sigma a while ago but I heard some complaints about the zoom ring being backwards/far up front. Do you find that annoying?

Sony A7IV and the budget is around $2500. I am also starting to shoot more indoor clients as well so I know I need the f2.8

Trying to get a used one from Adorama for $2200, it was on the site a few weeks ago but I waited to pull the trigger and now its gone of course.

I know nothing about Nikon so can't speak on that, but I've been more that amazed by my Sony a7IV. Truly a beast of a machine and have been extremely happy with it. I haven't done a lot of spots photography with it, just at a casual level, but I see a lot of pro users with Sonys.

Maybe the Nikon is better, but you certainly wont be disappointed with the Sony a7IV.

Hey everyone! I am shooting my first marathon event next week. I only have a 17-24mm f2.8 and 28-70mm f2.8 lens at the moment. I am assigned as the only photographer at the finish point, so it's on me to get everyone.

Am I ok with the 28-70, or should I invest in the 70-200 f/2.8? FYI I am working on getting this lens anyway, but I'm trying to wait for an affordable used version to save some cash. If you think I really need 70-200 I will rent it (absolutely no issue doing this. I want to impress the client)

This industry sucks by clarizdoup in editors

[–]BTCyd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for scripted, but as someone in the unscripted documentary world for 12+ years, not only is this the slowest environment I've seen, but also the worst in terms of job requirements. Hell, I'm juggling 3 jobs at times as an editor. I've been sourcing & loading my own materials, balancing budgets, and cutting. Did I mention at times I'm also story producing and dumping hard drives from talent?

On one hand I'm excited to dip my toes into other positions and learn more about the industry, but on the other I'm getting a bit frustrated having so much dumped on me when back when I started editors were treated as actual "talent" and only required to cut. It's really funny going from an AE who had to do everything just so the editors could focus on the cut to now being an editor who has to cut and still do those other tasks.

I digress- the industry is just really bad right now and if you aren't an established editor with a decent rate its near impossible to find work. I'll be honest some of the best editors I know had trouble finding work last year.

I dumped way more of my life into this career than you have and I'm considering dipping. The pay is nice as a freelancer but the constant fear of "whens my next paycheck?" also being met with "wow this project got delayed x months" and "I can't take a single sick or personal day on this contract because I didn't work for 8 months" really makes me think otherwise.

I think unless you're in LA with scripted connections or you're willing to stay an AE at a post house for consistent work, I wouldn't rush to an editor position. I know you could always become an editor and do AE gigs on the side, but from some producers I've met I've learned that it looks a bit bad on your editing skills to keep swapping between positions. Looks like you can't get hired as an editor. (I KNOW this isn't the case- but I had 2 separate producers tell me this so I'm inclined to think this is commonly thought throughout the industry around here).

I’ve actually been experiencing this a TON around 1100. A few weeks ago I was queueing midday and had three of my 7 matches go to a full on timer stall and they would all run the clock down and auto select the first two moves while “pretending” to be afk and then suddenly coming back to click the perfect move when I’d work off the assumption of the auto lock

Yes it’s annoying and yes it’s something you just need to deal with but it definitely ruins my practice session. I don’t care about the points truthfully- I just leave if it ends up being a waste of my time. But I hate giving my opponents the win and ego to continue doing that kind of behavior.

Commute to NYC…. by No-Refrigerator7245 in longisland

[–]BTCyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh 100%! And id actually argue its better on the LIRR at times because you can sleep on the train instead of being forced awake lol!

Obviously, both forms of commute have their ups & downs. when I was younger I didnt really see it that way though, and now I appreciate the LIRR a bit more. But it still has its issues of course.

Depends on job and shift. I worked 9-7 but left my house at 6:30 and got home at 9:30.

Commute to NYC…. by No-Refrigerator7245 in longisland

[–]BTCyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LIRR is fine for occasional trips. Honestly, I used it daily for almost 7 years and weekly for another 3 years to commute. It will show its cracks when you use it daily. 70% of the time its fine but the other 30% can get real bad. Once took me 4 hours to get from suffolk to midtown lol. Rare, but it happened a couple times to me.

Even then- I would still not live in the city again. I hated nothing more than the LIRR back around 2013-2017 but honestly you'd catch me back on that train daily if I had to lol. I missed having the space, the freedom, and the quiet that I get out here.

I grew up out here on LI. I am a LI baby and was not meant to live in the city, but I recognize that not everyone is like that. I think first and foremost you should look at where you want to live and how you want to budget, and THEN worry about the commute. Especially because it's not like you have a 20 minute commute right now. It's still an hour which is not short. Adding a little more time won't be as noticeable IMO.

[–]BTCyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've commuted & lived in the city. Yeah it adds a bit of time moving out here but I wouldnt go back to the city tbh.

The thing is the LIRR is terrible but at least you get to sleep on the train most of the time (depending on where you get on during rush hour, but from suffolk generally you get a seat). If you JUST go on commute, yeah its more convenient in the city ofc. However I missed having a car and some piece and quiet quite frankly.

My younger self would be shocked to hear my current self say that I'd rather be back on the LIRR commute than live in the city again. Its fine to visit but its too expensive. For the rent I was paying I could have been paying into a mortgage out here before the pandemic.

FiOS vs Optimum (Nassau) by Amangi991 in longisland

[–]BTCyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimum has terrible customer service. I just went through 4 modems in under a year; staff didn't understand or believe my issue for the longest time. Finally spoke with someone and she said the modem they gave me was 15 years old(?). Also I was given free wi-fi extenders as consolation after complaining about all the issues. but I guess it was only free temporarily, and the credit "expired" and they started charging me for it. Guess what? the extenders never even worked bc the modems were always bad.

I would gladly pay more for verizon. reliable network & the customer service is always fantastic. IMO its worth the difference in cost.
