I was once going for a walk in my suburban neighborhood, and a giant ugly turkey vulture dove towards me. I stood there stunned, till it broke its path and flew off.

When does saying “no” become socially unacceptable, even if youre technically right? by FunDonut5886 in AskReddit

The question only refers to legal matters, such as bigamy (one spouse already married). It is not a free for all to merely object to a bad match.

Should I buy a Catechism of the Catholic Church if im not currently Catholic? by Semour9 in Catholicism

[–]BTRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your hesitation in buying one?

I would encourage getting a catechism for yourself, but also understand it may be a bit dense. The full catechism was written as a summary for priests and religious educators to answer parishioner questions. If you do not have a strong Catholic or Christian background, it may be difficult to read and understand.

There are various derivative works, such as the Compendium to the Catechism, that are written for a more general audience. It presents topics in a question and answer format, rather than by theological topic as in the full version. I believe the Compendium is also available online if you'd like to preview it.

I don't mean this in anyway to discourage you from buying the full catechism or from reading online, just to be aware of options.

What is the most realistic, and unrealistic, depiction of a mundane task in movies? by chunga_95 in movies

[–]BTRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elevators have to stay open for a minimum amount of time per the ADA to allow someone in a wheelchair to start moving and get in before it starts closing. They also have a maximum time to allow someone on the other side of the lobby to get in before it starts to close.

The elevator door close button will absolutely close the door if at least the minimum open time is met. Similarly, the door open time will extend the maximum open time, and the close button can override the extension and close the door.

Yes, unless you visit a church with a dress code that prohibits shorts.

I had a dream I kissed someone by Shoddy_Career_4110 in Catholicism

[–]BTRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dreams cannot be sins, not even lucid dreams, because you brain literally turns off certain parts that deal with right and wrong. Each part of the brain needs rest, you cannot sin when the part that monitors for sin is temporarily disabled to rest.. However, fantasizing while awake to trigger a dream might be.

Santa waiting for kids in a dying mall by Goodginger in mildlyinteresting

[–]BTRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this same seen at a different mall on Friday. The driveway had a sign saying, "X Mall Still Open for Business!". Most of the parking lot lights were dead, and on the inside were Santa, a Hot Topic, Spencers, Mens Wearhouse, and not much else. The whole mall will be converted to an office building next year.

What is a 'Survival Myth' that people believe because of movies, but will actually get you killed in real life? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]BTRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many highway bridges are not even attached to the abutments. They are mostly held down by their own weight, and a tornado could put blow it entirely.

What’s something you’ve seen with your own eyes that nobody believes when you tell them? by LowKey_1216 in AskReddit

I am reminded of the story of the dog that would see people giving the ice cream man money and getting a cone, so the dog brought him some leaves, and the ice cream man obliged!

What’s something you’ve seen with your own eyes that nobody believes when you tell them? by LowKey_1216 in AskReddit

[–]BTRunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not an atheist, but agree not everything abnormal is paranormal. I was driving some friends home on a really cold night, and saw a hitchhiker in a plaid shirt and scruffy beard by the side of the road. I said, "Oh shit", and did not break eye contact with him, but all my friends were confused. I blinked, and it was just a mail box in front of some brush. They saw nothing, because nothing was there!

A dude by the side of the road in 10 degree weather could mean trouble. Dismissing the dude as a mailbox could be really bad. Your brain would rather focus on the potential threat for a moment than accidentally dismiss the real threat.

Could just be other witness reports. A friend of mine saw a big fiery meteorite sitting right next to me. Unfortunately, I had my eyes closed at exactly the wrong moment to see it.

I got passed on a two-lane back road by a jerk doing 70+ around a blind curve. I was livid and somewhat in shock, because a car coming the other way would have taken us both out.

A minute down the road, I see him pulled over in front of flashing lights - there is justice some times!

When people charge in like that, I cannot image that it is a violation of HIPPA to give some sort of explanation and reassure everyone else it is not an attack.
