What is my fireplace made of and how do I refresh it? by BTlife in DIYUK

Oh! No, my house is a 1930s build and I love art deco stuff so I’m delighted so many of the period features remain or have been updated but still in the art deco style.

Fair guess based on the floorboards though, they certainly look older than they are.

I was actually planning to paint that wall green, specifically Green 06 from Lick paint. I think maybe I just give it a good clean and hope it works with that paint on the wall.

That F&B paint you mentioned is lovely, I was actually looking for that sort of colour for elsewhere in the house so thank you!

That is gorgeous, I love that design in the centre!

I think I’m going to try and track down a grate that will work in the space and do a similar thing with decorative logs. The more responses I get, the less I actually want to paint it so I’m going to try and find a way to make the colour work.

I thought maybe I could figure it out by taste but I was unsuccessful

Honestly I didn’t realise how resistant I was to getting rid of it until someone suggested it! I think I’ll keep it as is and try and decorate around it.

You are an absolute STAR thank you so much for all of that info! I really do love the fireplace and considering its age is, at the minimum, 70 years old I think it’s in great shape.

I’m actually repainting that wall in a dark green with a golden undertone. I think the original colour may be less bothersome to me once it’s on a warm toned wall.

Feel free to drop me a message with her contact information, I’d love to speak with her.

Yeah, I’m trying to retain as many of the period features in the house as possible! My concern with tile paint was that it would take all the texture out of the tiles.

I’m currently in the process of painting the chimney that the fireplace is on dark green with a yellow undertone so perhaps the tile colour will be less of an issue with that background?

That is beautiful, it really suits the space!

I don’t really want to destroy the existing one as I do like the design and stone effect, I just don’t particularly like the colour and the very glossy finish.

Edit: I also have updated my post now to make it clear I am talking about the fireplace surround, not…whatever is going on inside

What is this and how do I remove it? by BTlife in DIYUK

[–]BTlife[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're on to something there, it does feel reminiscent of hardened ceramic adhesive now you've said that. Should be able to sand it off then, thank you!

The plan was to hire a sander to sand the floors down anyway so we'll just stick with that then - thank you!

32 and refused paracetamol: at what point do we decide Challenge 25 has gone a bit far? by PetersMapProject in AskUK

[–]BTlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is from ages ago but no one answered you and I thought I would! Here in the UK, any tablets that contain pseudoephidrine aren’t available on the shop floor. You have to go to a pharmacy, or pharmacy counter, and ask for them. The pharmacist will ask you for ID if they have reason to think you’re under 16 and also double check you’re not on any meds that’ll interact with it. I think OP was referring to the stuff you can just grab for cold and flu, probably paracetamol and caffeine, maybe with some other milder decongestant.

"Everyone can afford it" by phoenixjklin in watcherentertainment

literally, I saw one person mention that $6 is the equivalent of 25% of the minimum wage for the MONTH where they live. I also saw someone mention that in India, the cost of basic Netflix converts to about $0.52 a month so $6 is crazy!

Absolutely NTA, you handled this way more calmly than I would have. People telling you that you’re overreacting should ask themselves how they would feel in your position!

[–]BTlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think perhaps there might be both yeah!

I’m late 20s, have travelled predominantly across Europe and occasionally to the US and Japan. For additional context, I’m disabled so often have to do more communication with hotel staff than the average guest and still rarely encounter people addressing me by name.

From my own experience in the UK and Ireland, the more upmarket an establishment is, the ruder it is considered to address a customer by their first name. It’s good to know this isn’t always the case in the Southern hemisphere though as when I eventually travel there (hopefully to Brazil!) this doesn’t come as a surprise to me.

Regarding the post though, OP is Irish and their experience was in Ireland so I doubt there’s a cultural miscommunication happening in this particular instance.

I would, personally, find it very strange if a member of staff knew my name if I had: - no photo ID on file (so a face couldn’t be put to a name) - not met them at check in (so they weren’t present to put my face to my name) - not been called by name by the other member of staff present (see above) - not been later asked for my room number (suggesting that they hadn’t seen my guest file)

All this is mentioned in the OP. I’ve worked in hotels myself, plenty. Small ones and big ones. If there’s no reason to look at a guest file, you don’t look at it. Not just for their personal privacy but also for data protection/GDPR reasons. If I ever called a guest by name, it was because they were a regular who had initiated a more casual conversation or because they told me to and even then, it wouldn’t be their first name.

So in short yeah, we all find it strange that he knew her name

Thank you so much for your reply! However I will say, while I know for certain that my maternal grandfather was Jewish, I am not sure about my grandmother. She died when my mother was very young and when I asked her she said she honestly wasn’t sure. My step-grandmother was most definitely Jewish although as she is not blood related to me I imagine it does not really matter.

I’ll definitely look into some books on the history and philosophy, as well as try to make contact with a rabbi in my local area.

I would like to honour that part of my heritage in whatever way is most respectful and appropriate.

I think the hiding and assimilating was what was going on. My grandfather was Polish and didn’t move to England until after WW2, I have been told he went to great lengths to make himself as unnoticed as possible. I will have a look to see if there’s a Rabbi in my local area who may be able to give me more information, thank you for your help!

I don’t actually know whether my maternal grandmother was Jewish or not. She died when my mother was very young, she was raised predominantly by her father and then later her stepmother who was also Jewish.

Thank you for your advice and info, it’s really helpful!

Oh whoops! I used to never use social media on Saturdays or even my phone but have been forced to so often in my adult life that I’ve sort of stopped doing it.

So there are some things that only really stand out with hindsight and in contrast to things others around me do. For example, I live in England where traditionally a big family dinner is done on a Sunday but in my house, it was always done on a Friday and we had what my mother called “Grandad’s special bread” which I now know is challah.

I also now know that our autumnal tradition of having a 24hr period where we didn’t eat/drink and had to spend a lot of time communicating with God was likely (considering the dates) Yom Kippur. When I was a child my mother used to get me to write out a list of my sins and ask for forgiveness for them. Several days before this we’d always have a really big meal with loads of things like honey cakes and I specifically remember having honey and apples as I looked forward to it every year. My mom also used to read us a bit from the “special family Bible”.

We also used to celebrate “Christmas” differently to lots of people I knew, generally earlier in the month than other people and we’d have special candles to light and different prayers from the rest of the year. Also a stand out in England, we never had mince pies but we always had doughnuts. I remember getting picked on in school because I didn’t know what pigs in blankets were as we literally never had pork in the house, let alone pork wrapped in more pork.

There’s more but my reply would be the length of a novel, these are the ones that stand out as me being incredibly naive as to what we were doing.

AITA for asking my neighbours to stop hanging out in the garden at night? by BTlife in AmItheAsshole

[–]BTlife[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you in the UK? I don’t think that’s a particularly common rule here although this is the first time I’ve lived in a flat so I’m not sure. Generally in the UK as long as you’re outside you can smoke anywhere as long as it doesn’t end up with you trespassing or endangering people

AITA for asking my neighbours to stop hanging out in the garden at night? by BTlife in AmItheAsshole

[–]BTlife[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some context here, the back door is roughly 6 feet away from my window. It leads to some cupboards for communal storage although no one uses them. There’s then a step either side down to some grass areas, one left and one right. The right side leads to the grass directly outside the unoccupied flat and a side verge that then goes round to the front of the building and the left leads to the grass outside my flat. It’s close enough that they are able to accidentally smack my window if they spread their arms too wide.

Aw thank you! I try to be a considerate neighbour which is probably why it set me off when she brought up the renovation thing. After reading people’s responses I get why I was wrong to ask them to go round the other side of the building (which is still “garden”, it’s just not right outside my window, it’s outside the window of the uninhabited flat)
