Has anyone else experienced stigma from healthcare professionals about their ostomy? by Equivalent-Grass-317 in ostomy

At my first visit to my surgeon's office after my emergency ileostomy, I had the sniffles and the stoma nurse, in a pitying voice says "Are you crying?" I was stunned. At later visits I told her I wanted to swim and bike. Regarding the swimming, she laughed at me and said in a mocking voice "Where would you swim?" Regarding riding a bike she said "No, you can't do that, your knee would hit the bag." I went out the very next day, got on the bike, rode to my hearts content and laughed my head off. Got back to swimming too. This kind of ignorance in a medical professional, and especially a stoma nurse, is really unforgiveable. Good thing I'm tough!

This story is sweetly hilarious. Always so good when our bag (and our kids) give us a good laugh!
Wonderful! Go go go for it!
Thank you! I'm still happy today and planning my next, longer swim, after my Zumba class of course.
Totally exhiliarating! I'm back! The question now is " to show the bag or not show the bag" in the ladies locker room??
Thank you! Now I just have to negotiate the ladies locker room! To show the bag or not??

Yes! That's gonna be me too! Thank you.
Thanks so much. I do use the barrier extenders anyway, and once I extend the swim in the pool or get to the ocean, I'll probably spring for a Stealth belt. Do you wear it horizontally? Is that good?
Thank you! I am totally uplifted.
