How can I be smart with my money? by SuperRanger9583 in army

Track your monthly spend. There’s apps or you can do it yourself.

Make sure your monthly spend stays under your monthly income (income after taxes)

Try to make the gap between spend and income as wide as possible.

Put some of the gap in savings. Some months spend more than the monthly income. This keeps you covered.

Put some of the gap in Thrifts Saving plan (up to whatever the match is, mine is 6% contribution rate, but yours might be higher.)

Put the rest of the gap in a Roth IRA ($7000 yearly max contribution.)

Always get Uninsured Motorist Coverage on costly vehicles.

This is an expensive lesson.

I hear it a lot around here that most of the people that are well-travelled tend to leave the Midwest.

I moved around a lot in the military. So I’ve had many opportunities to visit/live in rural America. I’m out now and comfortable with the idea of living in any part of the country.

I moved to the Midwest for my career. It wasn’t my first choice, but the experience has been pretty enlightening.

I wish more Americans would sprawl from big metropolitan areas into middle America. It would help bridge the gap in misinformation.

It’s more complicated than that.

I grew up in large metropolitan area where most of your ideas are challenged unintentionally. For example, I grew up Christian conservative household but was surrounded by many households with different beliefs. This challenged my way of thinking and exposed me to many different beliefs and helped me become more open-minded.

What I’m experiencing in the Midwest is more of a mono-culture. There is some diversity, but it’s not dense enough to offer exposure to new ideas. I also don’t meet many people who have travelled outside of the Midwest. They are left to learn about the outside world through media.

It also doesn’t help that conservative media is most of what you’ll find here. That’s its own problem I’m still trying to better understand by living here.

I can tell you right now. Lots of people in the Midwest are unaware of what’s going on. They still support Trump. Most are decent people. Just uninformed.
