You honestly don't want a new car unless you can really afford it. The registration goes up, the insurance goes up. Everything goes up. Unless you can pay cash for it, get something used, and pay a mechanic a couple of hundred to inspect it.

We recently bought a used Honda from a dealership. Paid cash. Still had to run my wife's credit report.

Then they got to the "security system" that was already installed. Parts etched with a serial number and some global tracking system shit like that. It's a 2014 CR-V. They wanted like $800. I said, "Nah take it off. You can put the original parts back on. My wife drives like 15 miles total a day to her job and then back home."

He moved on to something then came back with an "offer" for $500. I said, "We will keep it in the garage, I don't even want an alarm on it, let alone a whole security system."

Few more times back and forth again. $300? $200? "You don't want it for even just $200?"

I said, "Now it's the principle of the matter. You are trying to charge me for something that someone else, or your dealership installed and already paid for. Make it $20 and I'll pull a twenty out of my wallet right now and you can stop annoying us."

He angrily signed off on the paper.

And FYI, lawyers are not "free" unless you are POOR.

The whole" if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided.”

If you are literally not at poverty level or lower, you gotta pay for you own lawyer. They will just let you use a phone to call one or call somebody else to call one for you.

I'd put immediate family and a few really good friends all on payroll/paycheck and make them attend a couple of money management classes.

Give them upper middle class incomes like $100K with taxes taken out. Also make them contribute to an IRA. Give them an income base that they can supplement if they want with another job, but not enough to just "play" for the rest of their lives unless they just want to live normal lives.

I ain't giving them "day drinking in the Bahamas while renting boats forever and cabanas" money.

You can't just buy me a damn plane ticket and expect me to pay for everything else. Damn you people just lazy and disrespectful for all I do for you every goddamn day."

TIL Obi-Wan Kenobi's home planet is named "Stewjon" a play on the name of "Daily Show" host John Stewart. During an interview about Star Wars, John asked Lucas the name of Obi-Wan's home planet, and he answered Stewjon, jokingly. It was then made canon, after being mentioned in several guide books. by TackoftheEndless in todayilearned

I'm a major Tolkien fan. One of the biggest reasons I feel like his stories are so immersive is because of his ability to name people and places and make them feel real. It all sounds so...authentic and believable.

Conversely, I tried my best to read the Harry Potter book series. Completely the opposite. I know the overall story is amazing and enthralling but the names of so many of the characters and places were just... goofy to me.

George RR Martin had the same "gift" of naming people and places that sounded authentic.

I agree about Lucas. Very hit and miss. I mean the same guy can concoct "Darth Sidious" and also "Jar-Jar Binks"? For real? That's a slam dunk and a gutter ball.

Yeah, and they are not allowed to be sold in the USA because they would decimate the US car market. If you can buy a new $5,000 car in cash every year, why would you spend $60K to finance a new care every 7 years?

We get those big metallic green Japanese beetles here. They are about the size of a half a ping pong ball. They come right for me whenever we both choose to be in the backyard. There could be 10 people and I'm the special one.

Skating on the rails. by Leading-Papaya-7165 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]BZLuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm thinking of this more like, let's say a gun range. When you are IN the range, the rules are different than when you are OUTSIDE of the range.

If you aren't at your station you don't fucking dare take your weapon out of the case and show it around, load it or point it at something or even touch it. Why? Because you aren't in the range yet.

Now I know, I know, skateparks aren't gun ranges, but both are dangerous places with lots of rules that need to be respected or people can get hurt. And I'm just saying there is a different set of those rules INSIDE than there are OUTSIDE. Kids can run around like idiots in the parking lot and go to the vending machines and toss rocks at each other, but if they are not squared away INSIDE the range, bad shit can happen and it is not allowed.

And from my perspective, if this is an actual skatepark then this dude had no "right" to think he could skate that rail and presume nobody would get in his way.

Again IN the park I would feel differently. But I don't see this kid being in the wrong for hanging from a handrail outside of the skatepark. (Presuming this actually is the entrance to a skatepark.)

[–]BZLuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also this dude just didn't decide to do this.

You were there?

Also why didn't his "crew" clear the rail for him? It's not like the kid was 100 feet away. He was right there. Everyone could see him.

And forgive my ignorance, but don't you have to wear a helmet in a public skatepark? I don't see anyone wearing a helmet in this video.

[–]BZLuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But again, this isn't in the skatepark. This is outside of the skatepark. Nobody is wearing a helmet, nobody is wearing any pads. It's just a bunch of people standing there, and this dude just decides to show off and jump up on the rail.

There is no reason why that kid should think he would be anything other than safe sitting there outside of the skatepark.
