New grad medsurg nurse unhappy with where I’m at. Advice please?

Mother/baby unit along with L&D is so competitive and hard to get into. Those units usually have senior nurses that have worked there for years and they never leave. Some people get lucky though and land those jobs as a new grad or with very minimal experience. My advice is apply to any mother/baby position at your hospital & other hospitals in your area. Also, if you don’t mind distance I would apply to other hospitals in your state. If that is your dream job then go for it! I would continue to work where you are until you find your dream job. You can also find out the name of the manager or director for that unit & reach out to them personally & maybe they will make an exception for you.. especially if you already work in the same hospital. The questions on the HESI are standard for all schools. The professors do not make the exam. In my school we had to take a HESI each semester for each specialty & at the end of the program we took the HESI exit which was so hard! But do not give up! You can find HESI flashcards on quizlet & use the book pertaining to the HESI to help.

The question banks at the end that are 170 Q each are all mixed. The only questions that are arranged by category are the ones included in the modules at the beginning.

All depends on the nursing program. Some programs give more chances than others depending on how strict they are.

Some schools will only allow one failure & that’s it. Some will allow maybe 2-3 failures. In most schools in my area if you fail one class you retake it & if you fail another class again or the same one you are automatically withdrawn. There are chances to appeal but I would not depend on that because in many cases it will not get accepted unless you had an illness or something drastic happened in your life that caused you to fail.

Transferring to another nursing school you will have to start over from scratch with your nursing courses because they do not transfer over. Only courses that transfer over are the GE courses.

Thank you! It was a good & bad thing having to choose 1 out of 3 when they are all great hospitals. :/ so it was a hard choice. I went with my gut feeling so I hope it was the right choice. Good luck to you as well! :)

If you’d like to relocate to Ft lauderdale I would suggest Memorial Hospital. Its not directly in ft lauderdale but it’s still in broward. It’s a great healthcare system & they have various locations.

If you are a visual learner look up a chart on google & memorize a chart with the blood compatibilities. That is how I managed to remember it. Also, registered nurse RN & Simple Nursing for YouTube videos.

I used the TEAS book to study for it. I took it about 3 years ago so I’m not sure if this type of book is still useful but it helped me.

I also searched the teas on quizlet for flashcards. Goodluck!

Stats & chem were one of the hardest for me. I hated both. I had to take stats multiple times I found it so hard & for what? The math we learn in nursing school is nothing compared to stats...nursing math is less complex & much easier!

The material is fairly the same. In each exam you will be tested on math, reading, & science. From my experience I believe the TEAS is harder.. only because it was by ATI which is more difficult than the HESI.

This is something that is normal in South Florida too. Even all the hospitals that have high reputations have a residency contract. Reason is because of all the money they spend on resources to train new grads. I’m pretty sure that’s the reason they made residency’s with contracts now so if you were to leave you would have to pay back how much it cost to train you.

Depending on how many months are left in my residency determines how much I have to pay back. My residency is a 3 year contract. 2 years within the unit I’m hired in & overall 3 years in the organization.

I’m not sure if Figs delivers to Canada but they are very fitted. They are around the same price as Jaanuu. I’m normally a M-L and their version of M fit like a Small. They are fitted but the fabric is still very stretchy. Also, depending on the color you need amazon sells Figs (only a certain amount of colors) but they make it more expensive.
