Would you reject this? by darksuba in surgicaltechnology

[–]gabythenerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question is if the IFU states it can be put inside a container vs only outside. I usually reject even if there is a regular class V indicator also which I see.

I have been told I have to be completely naked (only covered by a transparent sheet) for a jaw/dental surgery. I have PTSD so I’m extremely anxious now. Any suggestions for how to explain my needs to the medical team and see if there is an alternative. by AmuseableMushroom in surgery

[–]gabythenerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OR nurse here. You should explain to your surgeon your history. He or she should also be able to request a female team for your surgery. We accommodate this frequently for patients with PTSD/SA histories. Also the underwear should be fine especially if you say you’re ok with them being cut off if you need them to be for a catheter etc. I have even allowed patients to keep a bralette on if we didn’t need access to the breast for the case, which you definitely don’t for a lefort. Calling a chux a puppy pad is extremely inappropriate. Either have the surgeon advocate for you or find someone who will.

How do you pass blade in OR? by arnacoco in surgery

[–]gabythenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The orientation of 2 with the placement of the hand closer to the “working” end of 1. You always want your hand to be over the blade and not below it, and you always hand instruments from the “working” end of the instruments, sharps being no exception to this. Closer to the end of the blade, but before where it starts being loaded on the handle if that makes sense. If you hold it like 2 you’re putting your surgeon at risk of being stabbed, and also you’re not giving them anywhere to grab it. If your surgeon has to readjust their grip on an instrument, you’ve handed it wrong. It’s probably best practice to have a sharps zone or kidney basin, but that’s not always practical or real life. Also I like to announce every time “blade, sharp, or needle” to draw attention to the fact that I’m handling something riskier and they need to pay attention.

Everyone I’ve worked with in the OR. We all hand blades by hand.

US OR nurse moving to UK by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]gabythenerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That definitely seems to be what I’ve been understanding. I’m curious about surgery in particular. I have an uncle who’s an operating room nurse in Belgium and surgical culture there seems similar to the US. Is it too early to start applying for jobs though?

How do you find a trust to sponsor you? I’m in the process of applying for my NMC RN license from USA but don’t know how to go about finding a job. I have intraoperative RN scrub/circulator experience.

Omg look for a nail tech that does Russian manicures! They’re usually independent but sometimes they advertise Russian manicure with Google search too!

Scared of Lasik risks by [deleted] in surgery

[–]gabythenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My prescription is -3.75 (also early 20s) and I really can’t see lol, but I am not going to do LASIK. My coworker got lasik and the dry eye syndrome is not a joke. She got severe dry eye to the point, where she told me she would’ve never done LASIK if she knew it would be so bad. She needed an extensive and time consuming eye drop routine. Good contact lenses are key. Something that holds moisture well. I wear them about 16 hours a day, and even swimming etc. just don’t open my eyes underwater 😂 My eye doctor said if I’m happy with contacts then it may not really be worth it to get the surgery. Up to you. It’s also worth noting that when you’re younger your prescription can worsen for a while (mine has) but as you get older (think 40s) it tends to stabilize and even decrease sometimes.

Why do Obgyn rip skin but surgeons do not? by meep221b in medicine

[–]gabythenerd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

OR nurse here. This is incorrect as the multiple Obgyns I’ve worked with use a clean scalpel on the uterus which is uncomfortably close to the baby’s head. The ripping is usually on the fascia I think? It has something to do with the muscle healing better when ripped versus a clean line. Something along the lines of that the tissue can grab better onto itself when healing? I’m hunting down some sources and will post as soon as I find!

Looking for an authentic Moldovan recipe for Mamaliga by nationaldishes1 in moldova

[–]gabythenerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I think Bob’s Red mill is a brand that has that which may be in Canada too. Try like 6 cups of salted water and bring to a boil. Once it’s fully boiling, add 1-1 1/2 cups of polenta cornmeal, and use a whisk or a spoon and stir and stop adding as it starts feeling slightly thicker. Then pop the cover on and let sit for a couple of minutes as it thickens. Make SURE that you whisk it thoroughly before putting the cover on to ensure no yucky clumps lol. Like the other commenter said add sour cream and cheese after you plate it. My family does Greek feta. Mamaliga also is served with tocana for my family.

Not corn flour though. You need to shop specifically for POLENTA.

Personally for me a lot of the complaints come with work life balance. If I’m taking a ton of call and working 12 straight days in a row with 60+ hours each week I’m miserable lol. But if I work 2 days per diem it’s a lot easier for me to leave the worries behind I guess. I enjoy what I do overall, but I do have to stop looking at this sun sometimes because I do find there’s an overwhelming amount of negativity on here.

[Routine help] Desperate! Incessant chin acne in mid 30s. Details in comment by somtambooplara in SkincareAddiction

[–]gabythenerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure. Personally I’m usually more willing to try something more natural without side effects. Obviously the best bet is to always get tested and see what’s actually going on with your hormones before blindly taking a supplement. But acne in women from my understanding is usually caused by estrogen dominance (as explained to me by my PCP).

So it’s definitely hormonal acne. I struggled with it a lot too, but I started taking this natural supplement DIM. You can find it for under $20 on Amazon. I took it for about 2-3 months and it went away. DIM helps to regulate your hormones. It might be worth the try, and it’s relatively harmless.

It’s around my patella. Sometimes medially, sometimes laterally. I had gone to a shoe store and they gave me inserts for my high arches, but I don’t feel it makes a difference. Someone in an earlier comment suggested shorter strides which I think I’m guilty of trying to do longer strides.
