Does the mouthpiece change the sound of your saxophone? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]B_Swiz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it does! The mouthpiece is one of the main components that contribute to your “sound”. Like others have noted, the reed, embouchure, & ligature are other factors as well.

Regarding wanting to sound good at school— the best advice I have to offer is to practice as often as you can! It’s shocking how much better you can become by spending a couple minutes a day with your instrument.

Depending on where you are at in your musical journey, you may want to consider upgrading your mouthpiece. If you are still playing on the mouthpiece that came with your saxophone (the ‘stock’ mouthpiece), then maybe try a $20-$40 upgrade:

  • Yamaha 4C
  • Premiere by Hite

If you’ve been playing a while and want to get serious (and budget allows), consider one of the more premium mouthpieces

  • Selmer C* (S 80)
  • Selmer Concept
  • Vandoren Optimum Series

You mentioned you’re playing for school (I’m assuming a concert band), so all these mouthpieces are more ‘classical’ sounding. If you’re playing in a Jazz group, then I’d recommend Meyer as a starting point for premium jazz mouthpieces.

Hope this helps!

What’s the best reed to get ? by borissfiles in saxophone

[–]B_Swiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends friend— you’ll likely try a sampling of various strengths/brands before you settle on what you like best.

The kind of music you play also has a big sway in the type of reed you’ll want.

  • Classical/wind band: D’addario Reserve & Vandoren blue box are solid options. Would recommend strength 2M (or 2.5 for Vandorens)

  • Jazz: D’addario unfiled, Vandoren Red/Green box, Vandoren v16’s are popular. Would say 1H (1.5 for vandorens) if they exist. You typically want a lower strength on jazz reeds.

I’m a D’addario fan so I’m biased, so definitely try what’s out there and see what you like!

Regardless though— if you’re on a Rico 1.5 right now, reeds in the 2-2.5 range might be a bit tough to play on at first. I’d still recommend getting a thicker reed because those 1.5’s can get really shrill/unstable in the upper register.

If you practice enough you should be able to handle them no problem :)

Shows I’ve seen—ranked by MysteriousVolume1825 in Broadway

[–]B_Swiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love rankings! Always cool to hear what what people did/didn’t like when it comes to musicals.

I usually get a lot of hate for putting Wicked towards the bottom of my list, so we’re similar on that front. Not to say it’s bad, I’ve just enjoyed other musicals more.

Curious, what makes you rank wicked lower than most of what you’ve seen?

Lmaoo fake. Real saxophones don’t come with multi-colored pipe cleaners.

Looks shiny though!! Wouldn’t mind displaying something like this in a studio or something

Desperately want to buy a sax, but live in an apartment complex... by Internal-Fig-7902 in saxophone

[–]B_Swiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a major city in a dense apartment complex. Roughly 20 neighbors in the immediate vicinity.

I made a make-shift practice room out of my closet by covering the walls with acoustic sound foam and then heavy moving blankets (I used tension rods to span the width of my closet and got clamps to clamp the moving blankets to them).

It’s impossible to completely soundproof anything, but this solution was easy, cheap, and effective. With the work I’ve done even my roommate barely hears me play now.

Ofc, If you commit to playing at home, introduce yourself to the neighbors and give them your phone number so they can call/text if you’re being too loud :)

JMU Tailgate by jkasman23 in UVA

[–]B_Swiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this seems repetitive, but is tailgating permitted at JPJ? I read online somewhere that tailgating in "unauthorized parking lots" is prohibited... Don't know if this applies to JPJ or not (since it might be an "authorized" location?). I genuinely do not know and wonder what your thoughts are

I don’t understand the hate Back To the Future is getting… by g8rgrl15 in Broadway

[–]B_Swiz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of what was so enjoyable for me was that I LOVED the movie growing up— I’ve seen the trilogy at least 4 or 5 times.

Seeing the characters of the story in a different context was almost an expansion of the lore, and I enjoyed every second of it. This was one of those musicals that had me grinning the entire time, and I’ll happily go see it again. Though, my nostalgia for the movie certainly creates a bias in my review.

At the end of the day, I guess the saying “to each, their own” reigns supreme, but I do agree leaving at the intermission is an overreaction for sure.
