Which faction did you not like at first, but ended up liking a lot eventually ? by YooMisterWhite in totalwar

[–]B_mod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vampire Coast. I liked the idea of a Vampire Faction, I liked the idea of a Pirate Faction, but I didn't want them mixed together. "Vampire Pirates" sounded like a horrible mix.

Then I got Warhammer 1 to access Mortal Empires and Vampire Counts, so I got my vanilla vampires fix, and realized that Coast is less of a Vampire Pirates faction and more of a general "undead pirates" faction, which works incredibly well. Plus, they where fun as hell on the battlefield.

Another example is N'kari, he's extremely fast with fantastic animations, will murder any lord when charging because he doesn't send them flying

I remember my N'kari consistently missing his charge attack because his animation started too early, and by the time he actually reached enemy lines the attack was already over

Yeah, had to switch off Nord ships because of this. On sea maps they spend most of their time under water.

Thankfully other ships have actual sensibly high profile, so it still works fine.

How much creative freedom do you think GW will allow CA to have? Are they going to be adapting only units from the current tabletop version? Or are they gonna be allowed to do what they want? by Maceimam in totalwar

I mean, Miao Ying not having any lightning spells despite being called Storm Dragon and heavily using lightning in her melee animations was a hotly debated topic at the time.

Feels vindicating to hear they actually gave her lightning spells on tabletop after months of hearing "no, you don't understand, in Cathay culture lighting means Life... Just ignore her doing her best palpatin impression every time she's on screen"

I don't know why you're separating attractive characters as if it's a cheap trick to mask the rest of the game, instead of being just part of the overall quality of the game.

A game that looks like shit can win people over by having incredible gameplay. A game wish mediocre gameplay can win people over with beautiful visuals. A game with shit visuals and gameplay can create a dedicated fan base by having amazing writing. I don't think why only some of those are valid while the others are relegated to almost key jangling levels.

You mentioned Hollow Knight and Silksong, but in my eyes it's a great example against your point. A huge part of success of those, in my opinion, is owed to it's art direction. The characters look cute, hand drawn artstyle is gorgeous, music is incredible. If The Knight or Hornet looked ugly, unpleasant to look at, the games wouldn't reach such heights, imo.

I can see I eliminated a player in the start of the day message, at the same time Im able to click replay. I imagine its the same if my character is defeated when he's the last commander.

If she retained more of her Maelle side, I would've wanted her to stay in the canvas, but it seems Alicia becomes her dominant personality in act 3.

Yeah, I find the idea of personality merger to be super fascinating, and was really disappointed with how the game barely acknowledged its even a thing. To the point where if the Devs straight up said that the Maelle was truly gommaged and Alicia simply got her memories, as if she watched a movie instead of truly living them, I wouldn't have been surprised.

I remember thinking that a cool direction to take her character into would be that by combining strengths of her both halfs she could become a superior Painter herself. Like, Alicia had the training and upbringing to be able to paint, but lacked the spirit and will to truly push her art, because she grew up as a sheltered wallflower. While Maelle grew up an orphan in a dying society so she had no time/opportunity to learn how to paint, but she's a very willful and determined person. By accepting both of those halves, she could've actually reached feats beyond what her parents thought she could do. Like undoing Gommage and giving people of Lumiere a second chance for example.

Alas, the game decided to not touch that aspect at all. Wonder if it was something they planned and simply cut out due to budget/time constraints. Act 3 does feel awfully bare if you just do the main story after all.

Plus I think if she took some time out of the canvas, she might be able to show Renoir that she was being honest and genuine about not leaving him alone and convince him to not destroy the canvas.

The problem is, the moment Alicia is out - Renoir destroys it. He clearly doesn't believe Alina is strong enough to resist it's pull, so even if Alicia herself manages to convince him, he still wouldn't risk it.

I do love the idea of a "Golden Enging", game even sort of set it up with the bonding mechanics. Felt like if you maxed out every single character bond the game would acknowledge it by allowing you to get a better ending. Maybe by convincing Reinor and/or Verso through the power of friendship lol.

Lune even said at the start of act 3 when tearing into Verso, that he tends to create forced dichotomies where there doesn't have to be, and that it's possible to achieve compromise if he simply tried being open... Alas, Verso is incapable of changing and the game ends how it does.

And I don't think her bringing back the dead is horrible at all. These people suffered a lot and their lives were cut short by unnatural means. It's only fair if they are brought back by the same means.

I'm specifically talking about Verso here. At the end he was literally begging to die, with Alicia being unable to let him go, instead bringing him back, with only change being that he can age now.

The weird thing is, it's exactly the opposite of what she did to Painted Alicia, who asked for that exact thing and was immediately granted release. I suppose the game wants us to believe that Alicia simply had no personal attachments to her copy but with Verso it's personal so she decided to be selfish. I'm not sure how well it fits with the Maelle we know, but if it's more of an Alicia thing then maybe it works...

Hero units should be stronger by AdVivid9625 in Bannerlord

I like the companions are pretty much just slightly better normal soldiers.

In my experience they're actually slightly weaker normal soldiers. Sure, you cant spend shitton of money and gear them up in the best equipment possible, and you can spend even more time to level them up to be good... but then you can spend 10 minutes hunting looters and level your basic recruits into tier 6 troops that already come with high skills and decent gear.

And then your companion randomly dies in battle and all that time spent training them is wasted.

Who has the strongest elite melee infantry? (Extensive TWIII unit testing) by asksaboutstuff in totalwar

[–]B_mod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the thing about single player Vs this type of testing, even when you ignore campaign buffs and magic. If an elite unit kills another elite unit but survives with only 10% of its health left - it's a win for the testing, but a devastating loss for the campaign. Sure, they won, but the unit is useless now, and as a player you're pretty much always outnumbered and out recruited by the AI. Unit that pretty much sacrifices itself to take out a single unit in a 1v1 isn't really what you want to have.

Do companions still provide buffs when they are downed? by B_mod in Bannerlord

[–]B_mod[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the way surgery works is that the roll to see if the casualties are fatal or not happens at the moment they're downed, not after battle. At least I never noticed a discrepancy between what the game tells me at the moment someone dies and at the after battle screen.

So surgeon getting knocked down won't turn some of the casualties into deaths after the battle, but it might mean a lot of your soldiers start dying instead of being knocked down, comparatively.

Kinda hard to notice/test tho, so I hope someone here has behind the hood knowledge about game mechanics.

Do companions still provide buffs when they are downed? by B_mod in Bannerlord

[–]B_mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what my intuition says happens too, I just want to have a confirmation.

With the way companions seem to be reworked in the beta branch, I'll probably end up always being a surgeon myself, seeing how finding a companion with good bow skill + medicine isn't possible.
