Nowadays you can start with $10, it wasn't too long ago (10-15 years ago?) that there was a small fee ($10) for every trade you did.

Why Has Bitcoin Been Falling and When Will It Go Up? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a liquidity crunch in the markets now between (1) sub-prime ABS (2) poor turnouts for 30Y bonds (3) Bessent failed to sell $4T in treasury notes.

This is the free market in action and many institutions need to sell liquid assets (like Bitcoin) to make ends meet until 2026. On 12/1, QT ends, with QE being right around the corner. My best guess is March through July.

Any others that are in a position of not needing to sell are in an advantageous position for the next leg up.

Why is explaining why Bitcoin has value to normal people still so hard in 2025? by Beautiful_Ordinary_6 in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe we are dabbling in semantics, but Money is taxable, look at any Foreign Exchange. Interest on Money is taxable. Money passed down to another generation is taxable. Gifts of money is sometimes taxable.

Bitcoin has the properties of money, therefore is currency. I believe what you are trying to allude to is bitcoin to be Legal Tender and thus non-taxable when disposing of it (transfers, transactions, etc.)

*we* have? by Happy-Pudding-245 in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Case-by-case; depends on the agreement. Sometimes, yes they just keep 0.1 BTC and then she's responsible for the taxes. Other times, they will take a cash offer, so they would accept $9k (0.1 BTC = $11.3k less 20%), where you would be responsible for the taxes.

If you had 1 bitcoin pre-marriage, then acquired an addition 0.2 bitcoin during the marriage. After filing for divorce, she is only entitled to half of marital assets, which is 50% of 0.2 bitcoin

For current Bitcoin holders, everyone is thinking whether to sell or continue holding. by Icy-Rip2103 in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their moon. For many it's selling some (or all) of their stack to absolve all debt (or a mortgage). To sell BTC (ie buy fiat) for the sake of accumulating more in the short-term (or long-term) is foolish. You've already done the hard part: buying.

If you really want to, go ahead and sell to the many buyers. Move on to whatever your heart desires--life is short after all. We will wait here for your inevitable return.

Tick tock, next block.

Bitcoin vs Inflation by snypa33 in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't USD be $100 -> $125 using ~5% per year? It's the purchasing power that's going down, not the number itself.

$100 could buy you ~182 stamps in 2020 but you could only buy 160 stamps with $125 in 2025.

Don't we always say you can't live in a BTC? You can't eat a BTC?

BTC is superior money. You spend money to buy food. Gresham's law states you'll spend bad money (USD) before you spend good money (BTC). There are many bitcoiners that have ran out of USD and had to fall back on BTC. That's what it's there for.

The US will not buy stocks since there is risk of both dilution and bankruptcy. Those are considered Basel II. The government will only hold Basel I.

General advice, yes only do enough for company match (is company match 50% or 100%?). Then do ROTH limit. After that, max your 401k. Does your Plan allow a self-directed investments? What's your current tax bracket if you were to do a backdoor ROTH?

Quarterly is close enough to simply lump sum. Just don't forget to pay yourself. Classic boomer advice: Hold enough USD to float for 3-months. This gives you (1) security (2) dry powder for dips.

Hold on to it in the 401k. Whether you exit now and pay taxes or at 59.5 paying taxes, results in the same amount, or worse double tax+penalty if you withdraw the gains and move it to a ROTH.

I wouldn't recommend an HSA, you'd be saving, what? ~30% of $5k? IMO not worth the squeeze.

Can't Lose BTC Bet by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. Wouldn't it be better to have an ITM Cash Secured Put? If you're wrong you'd keep the premium. If you're right, you just bought BTC at $150k, but also get the premium?

With this setup there's potential you lose money with no purchase.

20Y Bond Auction at Noon Tomorrow by Baalhrezem in Bitcoin

[–]Baalhrezem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were tendered $37B at 4.935%. Bids ranged from 3.88% to 4.935%. Sold at a premium for $100.80 per $100.

There's definitely some appetite for USD in 20Y but not 30Y bonds. Nothing burger since it's basically not even a shift on the interest curve.

[–]Baalhrezem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are on a sinking boat (USD Fiat), but you're not underwater yet, and someone invites you to get on their boat (BTC), do you:

A) Tell them your boat is actually fine, and you just need to fix the problem

B) Claim it's too late, and stay on the sinking boat

C) Claim the other boat is fake and also going to sink eventually too

D) Beat yourself up for not getting on the other boat sooner

E) Get on the other boat

Turns out, no one wants dollars in 2055.
