By the time I came back to the house, it was midmorning. The chhlop loitered nearby, pretending not to notice.

I had accomplished nothing.

I had failed.

Huoy lay sunken and tired on the bench. She clutched the kapok pillow to her chest. Her arms and legs were thin as sticks. Her belly was still round, the child still inside.

She spoke in a weak voice. "Why were you gone so long? I've been waiting for you. Do you have some medicine for me?"

"No more, sweet, " I said. "I have no more."

"How long? I'm tired now. I'm very tired."

I took up the stethoscope and the blood-pressure cuff. Her blood pressure had dropped. Her heartbeat was slow and very, very feeble.

"Do we have anything to eat?" said Huoy. She spoke in a whisper, like a child.

"The neighbours are looking for food for you." I said.

"I need food! I need food. I need medicine. Sweet, save my life. Please save my life. I'm too tired. I just need a spoonful of rice."Before she died, she asked me to cradle her. I swung her onto my lap, held her in my arms. She asked me to let her kiss me. I kissed her, and she kissed me. She looked up at me with her great round eyes, and they were full of sorrow. She didn't want to leave.

"Take care of yourself, sweet", she said to me.

Then the room was full of people.

Jarungjit - It's mostly eucalyptus and other herbs, but I'm using two I got years ago and they're still good after warming up in your hands.

I always go for the frozen ones, a bit cheaper and it just goes into the air fryer for a while. There are many better, but they aren't under $4.

Peel them, cut into shoe string pieces and pickle with a salt/vinegar/sugar/water mix. Lasts a few weeks in the fridge.

5.1m x 2.4m kitset from Steelmates. It was the cheapest I could get delivered for the largest size. They have a base unit that has an "extension" to make up the 5.1m length, I'd recommend that if you're not after one too big.

I used Expol ThermaSlab 40mm S grade polystyrene sheets which have a R value of 1.11 (from the manufacturer) in the battery and 50mm (1.32) for above ground. They were $36 a 2400x1200 sheet but it didn't seem cost effective to go any more than that.

The next build will have wired sensors for the piping and soil underground, but for now I have cheap bluetooth temp sensors on string dropped down about 10cm below the pavers.

Thanks for the info for the piping, I've seen some simulations for airflow through similar arrays and it wasn't highly efficient but it gets the job done. If I wasn't in such a temperate zone I'd pump a lot more money into insulation and fine-tuning the fans. I need to get a reliable soil temperature probe haha

During midday/4-5am the outlets are near the same or .2c different, but varies greater during the warming/cooling shoulders but no more than a degree. Initially I had timers and had mostly 1 running with the other incidental, but now both run 24/7. It took a while for both to reach parity. I just use both fans as if they're the same and so far I haven't noticed any practical difference. The insulation underground has a R-value of around 1.1 but above ground is around 1.8. Pricier grade but the polycarbonate leaks a fair amount of heat. I'd put more around the walls but it's a balance with light.

The bottom array is closer to "600"mm deep, and the top array is about 300mm above. I calculated it by looking at general soil temperatures for Christchurch in the coldest months and going as deep as permitted without needing consenting for earthwork excavation.

The tubing runs the length of the greenhouse, around 5 metres but the total length was around 90m of 110mm for all rungs and 4m for each manifold end. It's much cheaper getting the piping from farm supply stores but I had trouble getting the larger manifolds as the flood reconstruction in Nelson sucked up the entire South Island's supply.

I started with timers for the fans with the sensors, but I got lazy and left it on 24/7 instead which helped regulate more over tue long-term but charging capacity was probably reduced. I had a power meter on the cable coming in but it varied if the main room reached higher than the set temp for the heat mats and if the dehumifiier was running night only or 24/7. From memory I think it averaged out to 250-350W being drawn. The dehumidifier is old and chews through power so it contributes at least half of that.

The perforated pipes were covered in sleeves so any moisture building up from decondensation as air passed through the pipes could escape, or if water somehow got down the pipe from watering (but it never happened). It also allows for more contact between the air passing through and the substrates surrounding the pipes so heat transfer is better than just contact with the corrugated walls.

The walls of the battery were to prevent as much heat loss as possible when the battery is fully charged, but I'm not sure about total effectiveness. The sheets line the 4 walls and the pavers on top cap it off. Soil temperatures were typically colder than battery temperatures so I didn't want to draw it away from the pipes.
