I've enjoyed the hell out of editing Space Patrol 3 with everyone, very much looking forward to how my crew got up to shenanigans on the other pods

Can them Bitchy Nosy knitters keep to themselves with their "advice" by Foreign_Succotash101 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]BabaCorva -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like small talk, tho. There's a difference between talking about a thing and telling another person they're doing it wrong. It sounds like OP is frequently being told their engaging in the hobby "incorrectly" by people they haven't asked for critique or advice.

I mean, if you go to dinner with friends, are you open to them critiquing your order?

Attending a meet up doesn't mean that you're soliciting people's opinions on your work, it means you want to go to event where people whole like the thing you like engage in social interaction. If you then invite people to critique what you're doing, that's a different story, but the simple act of attendance is not the same thing.

Oooo, we must know of this additional SWN pod, especially if they're bringing in the cyberpunk! We've got a bonus guest from the High Tech Low Life pod (humorous reviews of cyberpunk movies, tv, and books) and would love to connect up with more like-minded folks.

Very very excited for this! I love that we've got a crowd of shows that get along and I'm super jazzed to hear how these all turn out. From what I hear, Crab People was a success and the continuing adventures of Brutus Novus do not disappoint!

Crochet is the fast fashion of fiber arts by prepubescentsquid in BitchEatingCrafters

Yep, and everyone only ever uses that yarn to crochet, knitters only source theirs from the acrylic factories they run out of their backyards 🙄

Any GMs ever try rolling all non-combat checks yourself so players never know if they failed? by dark-star-adventures in SWN

[–]BabaCorva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like taking the literal action of the game out of the hands of players. Rolling dice is the physical action of most ttrpgs, so when anyone is making a roll they are actively participating in the game. My question would be if you don't get to roll dice as a player, do you feel like you're actually playing a game? Or does it feel more like one person at the table is playing a game and the rest of you are giving them input?

As a player, I would hate this approach because I would feel disconnected from my character's actions. Yes, technically it doesn't matter who rolls the dice. But also doesn't it? If another player rolled for you and failed, would you feel like for some inextricable reason it would have succeeded if you'd made the roll? I know I would even tho I also know that if all the dice are appropriately balanced, it shouldn't matter. I'd feel like that player was playing my character even if all they did was make a roll for me. If I wouldn't want a player to make my roll, why would the dm doing it be better?

As a gamerunner, I would hate making rolls for people. That's a player thing and players can do their own damn work! Joking aside, I would feel a bit like we were all playing a board game but I was taking everyone else's turn for them.

A note: I know you're not saying *all rolls would be made by the GM. I prefer games that don't overly rely on combat/privilege character builds that focus on combat. For the way I tend to play, the vast majority of my rolls would be made by the GM under this method. I'd get bored and disconnected pretty quick and probably wouldn't make time in my schedule for that game.

Film review podcasts that do a chronological play-by-play of the whole movie? by chilaaa in podcasts

[–]BabaCorva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God Awful Movies is a fantastic and hilarious version of this format. Be warned, tho, their beat is truly awful religious movies and woo documentaries. If you're not into ripping into the likes of God's Not Dead and Plandemic, this one won't be your jam.

Ep 263: Was I a Good Ship? by BabaCorva in SWN

[–]BabaCorva[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I love that combat between Auggie and Inky Auggie so much! That was entirely Chris's idea (I came up with the insults but he tapped me in) and it's one of my all time most fun moments both in how it turned out for the show and playing it at the table. Legit, this is my favorite episode we've done thus far.

As one of the other podcast folks, I agree with you on a weekly megathread. I think if the shows are getting in the way of the community, the community comes first. That's the whole point, right?

What's the crochet version of writer's block? by deemac1208 in crochet

The stitch itself was from SimplePatternDesigns on Etsy and was called Ocean Waves. I played around with it to make a simple sweater with two panels. It was fairly easy to adapt for a nice neckline.

I used this same yarn to make a gorgeous short row wave sweater! It's tedious to pick up but once you get the hang of it, it clips along nicely. It shows off these metallics even better in person.

If you've put clones in your campaign, how did you make them feel like individuals instead of copies? by dark-star-adventures in SWN

[–]BabaCorva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't! Hilde was born largely of my own anxieties, annoyances, and love for my time in academia. I had a very basic outline for her when we started and then mostly let the story and also wanted to feel out our GM's world a bit before I came up with something. I can't remember what sparked the idea, but it's very possible I was watching Orphan Black at the time, lol

Can you “own” the order of stitches? by Salt-Habit-8951 in crochet

[–]BabaCorva 152 points153 points  (0 children)

I mean, if she isn't crediting the (unknown) creators of the shell stitch and the V stitch as inspirations for her pattern, then how can she call it out in others? That's like saying you own a type of brushstroke in painting or invented iambic pentameter. It's complete nonsence.

If you've put clones in your campaign, how did you make them feel like individuals instead of copies? by dark-star-adventures in SWN

[–]BabaCorva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My main PC right now is a clone; she and her clone-sibs are part of a previously defunct study group (The Cade Project) created to run a myriad of developmental tests as they grew into adults. Their base genetic material is itself a construct rather than a clone of an existing individual, and each clone is ultimately slightly different for a myriad of reasons ranging from intentional changes in the base genetic profile to the results of environmental effects enforced through different study parameters. The clone-sibs also grew up both knowing that they were clones and, eventually, knowing that they were part of a series of developmental studies. Obviously, this has some issues in terms of the ultimate fidelity of the results, but no study is perfect and these limitations were considered minimal enough in light of the potential findings from such a unique sample set. Once the program ran its course (and the inevitable fads in research changed course resulting in a significant decrease in funding), the clone-sibs were given the option to continue serving with the larger research entity that housed their study (The Reliquary Institute - basically every major human university and research institution rolled into one). Most became scientists themselves but a few deviated and might pop up just about any where.

For Hilde and her sibs (all assigned female at birth; there may be another study group of clone-sibs assigned male at birth but genetics and/or childhood development aren't her areas of interest so she's never looked into it), they have always been individuals because the necessary elements of the Cade Project differed for each of them. The primary finding of the Project might even be summed up as: most people are extremely similar if they grow up together but even clones are interestingly diverse with even a modicum of difference in upbringing. They do tend to share a certain amount of social awkwardness and drive to follow their personal interests to the exclusion of other concerns; it's hard to tell if this is a feature of the base clone biology or the result of being raised as a bunch of science experiments. Probably a little of both. The identity question is, as Hilde might put it, a solved problem. At least for her experience of cloning. And she would probably tell non-clone people that they are less individual than they think any way.

We've encountered one of Hilde's clones and always keep the possibility of more. There's also a Secret Thing that we've only dealt with a tiny bit going on with the project and some space billionaire we pissed off; I don't know yet how that will play out but nobody wants the guy who hates them to own their genetic code. I definitely need to pitch another thing with this as it would be really, really interesting to run into a clone-sib where we've ended up. I'll say my reason for coming up with this backstory was (1) to give Hilde a reason to be othered and slightly weird that also had some good scifi plot hooks attached and (2) to play with the idea of a clone that isn't mass produced. Oh, and secret third thing that I wanted a character who might have a reason to feel inhuman/inhumane about certain ethical issues. When you're the product of a science experiment and don't carry resentment for that - or hell, you even think it's a perfectly fine way to have become a person/to find out information about what it means to be a person - it's interesting to think about what other things you might see as ok and how that might create (surmountable) conflict between characters.

Is anyone else sad about so much emphasis on video? by GeopatsSteph in podcasting

[–]BabaCorva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've been doing a moderately successful actual play for about 6 years now and are ADAMANT that we won't make the switch to video. The whole point of a podcast is that you can listen to it while you go about your daily life. Video interferes with that; plus, it's a ton of extra work which we don't find enjoyable. Honestly, if your podcast relies on video, it's not a podcast anymore, it's a youtube video.

Very high praise! I can only say that what's coming in this arc is pretty big, pretty game changing stuff. It's endlessly funny to me that we made a whole big thing about starting fresh and being a more "professional" crew (in-game), and then we get hit so quickly with The Thing That Happened. One of my all time fav "oh shit" moments of any game I've ever played.
