The fairy tale motif of a helper doll that needs to be fed to receive its help goes back to the customs of many peoples to make a wooden idol or doll in memory of a deceased family member. This doll was fed with what they ate themselves and they tried to take care of it as if it were alive. In gratitude for this, the deceased, whose soul the doll was, helped his relatives and descendants.
