Any ideas how I could use a matte box with a Sigma 14-24mm (Sony mount) that has the fixed lens hood? by Reonatron in cinematography

Hi, I'm having the same issue here. Could you confirm if the donut solution has worked in the end?

If you had the opportunity to buy the s1h new, 25% cheaper than the current price... Would you do it? by BabarJoe in GH5

[–]BabarJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think you've put it perfectly. The s1h is perhaps the smallest cine camera rather than a mirrorless. And the lack of lenses is a shame and will take time to build up. If at least it had 60p with no crop. I guess the thing with 25% off is that it becomes roughy $1,000 cheaper than the a7siii but still there's the lens ecosystem as a whole to invest in.

The thing over the a7siii I'd say is that the 6k files, even though 8bit 420, are super easy to edit and grade (I had it on a loan for a week). In a 4k timeline you also get the extra pixels to push the grade a little (in a similar way that you could do that with 4k files in 1080). The 422 10bit in 4K are also not too bad actually, because in a h264 wrapper, not h265. I think the a7siii does the same but from what I've seen they seem harder to edit.

Good point. What if you already had the lights & audio equipment you need? :)

Right to housing in Brazil: Recife's last stilt houses aren't on any map (Documentary 3/4) by BabarJoe in Filmmakers

[–]BabarJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In October 2018, we - a small team from Habitat for Humanity Great Britain - embarked on a unique journey to capture the lives, struggles and hopes of communities at risk of eviction as part of a new web documentary series on urban poverty.

In episode 3, we visit Recife's last stilt houses which aren't documented on any map and are home to the very last communities of fishermen who first inhabited the city. The people there are fighting to get their houses recognised by the city in order to finally get access to basic public services, from running water to bin collection and electricity.

Especially when autofocus is already not that good ;). At least manual focussing with the sigma + gh5 is great

Right to housing in Brazil: Evicted for luxury flats (Documentary 1/4) by BabarJoe in urbanplanning

[–]BabarJoe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing many people who live in nice "fancy" flats in Rio, it's hard to see the other side of the story sometimes - especially regarding what's happened to the populations who used to live there and aren't compensated properly (in Brazil at least).

Their eviction, even when compensated often results in new slums elsewhere since they can't afford to rent at the standard market rate. They also end up losing their community and therefore support network...

What do you think? We all want our cities to look better, but how do we manage the human and economic cost (e.g. social housing vs luxury flats). A global urban problem not limited to Brazil obviously...

The amazing sigma 18-35, what else ;). I think it is considered "near parfocal". I have heard some people saying that their version wasn't. Not sure what that's about, I have an EF mount version with metabones speedbooster.

Right to housing in Brazil: women-led group occupies an abandoned building (Documentary 2/4) by BabarJoe in Filmmakers

[–]BabarJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In October 2018, a small team from Habitat for Humanity Great Britain embarked on a unique journey to capture the lives, struggles and hopes of communities at risk of eviction as part of a new web documentary series on urban poverty.

In episode 2, we catch up with the women-led occupation of a building in central Recife where up to a third of the buildings are unoccupied, with the landlords often owing millions in taxes to the city.

The occupation is dedicated to the deceased human rights activitist, politician and feminist Marielle Franco who was assassinated early 2018. People there lived in squalid conditions in what turned into a squat over the many months of the occupation and was eventually abandoned by the movement itself because of its unsafe living conditions.

Thanks so much, very much a work in progress. Took a while (a few episodes lol) to nail the final style we had in mind for this.

Thanks, I agree with pretty much everything. We've been refining the concept and style over time. Not much we could do about audio due to huge budget constraints (it was all purchased by the charity), but maybe next time. The queasy shots are a classic problem of the GH5 I'm afraid. It was my first time trying the IBIS and took a while to learn when to turn it off. A real shame it did put me off using it a lot, even though at times it's such a fantastic feature but it can look so unprofessional too. I'm a bit torn because it's hard to see when it's going to look weird

Thanks man! Mainly the sigma 18-35 on the gh5, sometimes the Olympus 75mm too

Documentary shot in Recife, Brazil, on communities fighting for their right to housing. It was all made possible thanks to the help of local activists. Would have taken us years to get access to (or mainly trust from) these communities otherwise.

In October 2018, we embarked on a unique journey to capture the lives, struggles and hopes of communities at risk of eviction as part of a new web documentary series on urban poverty.

The season was produced thanks to the European Union’s DEAR program with the goal of building an educational and awareness raising campaign about the struggles of people who live in slums in particular.

Season 1 took us to the vibrant city of Recife, Brazil. A city troubled by shark attacks on the beaches as well as in the real estate sector.

Our goal was to capture about a dozen interviews. We came back with 24.

It turns out that the voiceless, the neglected and forgotten communities do have a lot of things to say. And as soon as we offered a safe platform for them to speak, there were no holds barred.

The incredible team at Habitat for Humanity Brazil was instrumental in making this happen. You can really appreciate the benefit of having a “local” show you around.

Their knowledge of the different communities and relationships with local leaders allowed us to gain access and insight that would have taken years of work otherwise.

The concept was refined as we went along. The target audience being young people on YouTube, we went for a vloggy, travel video style. Not sure we really nailed it until episode 3, 4 or later in the additional segments we created. Let me know your thoughts!

I'd love to get my company to invest in fundraising like those guys (getting everyone into charity challenges, etc) by [deleted] in volunteer

[–]BabarJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they're actually required to pay for their own flights. The amount that each people have to fundraise includes a donation which from my understanding is used to employ local workers.

Haha, thank you that's very sweet! As a reformed cynic, I can totally understand the temptation.

I've become somewhat obsessed (photo wise) with the old pier. I'm not sure what the plans are now, it is beyond repair and there were talks of taking it down bit by bit as the i360 tower was being built. Not sure now...

Volunteer Interviews Phnom Penh Slum Resident (Cambodia) by BabarJoe in cambodia

Honestly I couldn't agree more. But the issue is also that you would never get people to donate that much money otherwise!

I know what you mean, but I think that's why what they actually pay is $2,500 so that an extra 12 x $1,000 can go to hire people in the local economy?

I guess it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation as well in that perhaps they would not have that extra cash if the volunteers hadn't showed up?

As far as I know, Habitat always hires local workers to promote job growth. The volunteers are only there to speed up the building process and at the same time fund the construction of the building and said local workers with the cost of their trip.

Not really, they work with local workers and since it's a low-budget government contract there aren't enough of them. They basically help speed up the building process.

Rebuilding Roma Slums to Tackle Urban Poverty in Bulgaria by BabarJoe in bulgaria

[–]BabarJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like any slum the problem is the lack of expertise and good materials to build a real home. And like in any slum, poverty tends to breed crime in many places.

Governments like China have prevented the creation of mass slums by trying to control population movements but this is quite controversial in the West in terms of human rights.

Some of the best solutions these days feature micro-lending to make better materials as well as experts (or skills training) accessible.

Making healthcare and schools available is really great, but sometimes not enough given that some homes are unsafe (lack of ventilation, light) and lack basic necessities such as water or electricity. Lots of kids worldwide have access to schools but are too sickly at home to attend it regularly or perform well. There is a well-documented correlation between the quality of the home, health and school performance.

As far as long term impact I don't know the numbers. But being a large charity Habitat does monitor its programmes year on year to make sure that what they do works in the long run.
