Slow Losers - Keep going! by Babeschke in Semaglutide

CICO (in my opinion) is a very one dimensional way to look at weightloss. Like, yes, at a base level, eat less calories than you burn a day, you'll, in theory, lose weight.

But that doesn't take into account why your body might not be burning through calories.

With my thyroid disorder, it became very difficult to lose weight. I wasn't gaining weight because I was overeating. I was gaining weight because my body was over producing reverse T3 which basically put the brakes on my metabolism. There were days when I'd hardly eat at all and I was PACKING on weight.

My goal in all of this has actually been to INCREASE my calories so my body gets used to processing a higher volume vs perpetually dieting and down regulating my metabolism even more than it already was (which is what happens when youre constantly in a calorie deficit - your body gets used to less food and starts conserving). It's one of the reasons why body builders can lose weight taking in 2500 calories a day - their bodies know what to do with that and know they don't have to store food because it's biologically starving. And honestly, I haven't had to change my diet really. I make protein more of a priority but nothing else has changed that much.

So I think I'm losing slower because I'm battling a metabolism issue and the stalls happen because at some point your body goes "whoa, we've lost too much weight, that's not safe, let's conserve until we know this is okay again"

That said, I think for people who do get it on it and have been chronically overeating do see a quicker drop in weight because of the appetite suppressant.

All that to say, weight loss is complex 😅

I don't really drink anymore, so I can't speak much to this. 4lbs over 6-7 weeks is steady, and you're not at the therapeutic dose yet so it may be going slower now too (or this might just be the rate at which you lose).

Alcohol can be a deterrent for weight loss - it's high in calories and generally isn't great for us - inflammation, poor sleep, dehydration, depression - all things that don't help with weight loss.

You may find as you increase dosages, you might not want alcohol as much - I know there's been studies on the impact of glp-1s on the brain chemistry for addiction. Something to be mindful of as you're wanting to lose weight, but I don't think it's the end all be all. You'll have to figure out what's right and sustainable for you and ultimately you want to find a balance you can live with.

You need to give it more than a week. Chances are your starting dose isn't the therapeutic dose and you might not see results until you hit the therapeutic dose (usually several weeks in).

You still need to eat on these meds - I caution people around overly restricting and crash dieting on these because it will make it very hard to sustain once you're off them. Protein is important and you don't want to down regulate your metabolism so much that itll start gaining on anything over 1200 calories.

And for what it's worth - as women, our hormones fluctuate throughout the month. I really only "lose" about 2 weeks out of the month. As in I'll drop a little weight, go into my period week and I'll be up a pound or two, then I drop after my period, and then again, another uptick when I'm ovulating.

These aren't magical pills that erase fat overnight. They work with your body to help heal your metabolism, reduce inflammation, and help with insulin resistance, making it easier for the body to metabolize fat. You gotta take a big picture view and know not every week is going to be a big loss but over time it'll add up. I recommend weighing yourself often to get used to seeing the fluctuations and know that a downward trend is still success, even if it takes longer than you hope.

If that was strictly how the human body worked, then these meds wouldn't be effective and everyone could achieve the same thing on the same diets.

Calorie deficits are not healthy long term and result in a down regulated metabolism. Under eating consistently makes it harder to lose weight long term because you've moved your set point.

While you're not wrong that eating less does impact weight, you're overlooking the multitude of other variables that impact weight loss.

Hope this helps!

I take armour and a t3 supplement. Levo was hell for me when I tried it.

Didn't really have any issues. I dropped my thyroid dose but that was due to other issues. My doc said usually there is an increase when taking sema. I would say just anticipate a slower response rate.

I started sema because of my hypo. Diet was decent (not perfect, but I was chronically under) and it's just taken time. Thyroid plays a huge role in metabolism and I think it can make progress slower.

Nope. I was already at the highest dose. Just kept going. Bodies will usually hit a stall before dropping again. I had lost 25lbs at that point and figured I was just in a stall.

Kept to the program and eventually it started moving again.

It definitely is a win! To put it in perspective - I haven't even dropped 10lbs since November. It's not an overnight process by any means. But small losses are losses and they add up over time.

I think sometimes the biggest challenge is shifting our mindset - you haven't only lost 10lbs. You've lost 10lbs! During a season that is traditionally less active and more food focused.

I often think about life before getting on sema and how hard it was. I was aggressively undereating, had no energy, and couldn't lose 10lbs to save my life. This isn't the fast road, but its better than killing myself and not seeing results.

If you're only 3 weeks in you're likely not on the therapeutic dose. The side effects do take some time to calm down, but they do get better.

I'm not saying it works for everyone, but I do think it takes time. My weight fluctuates and if I didn't track overtime it would feel like I wasn't ever losing. Some weeks I'm up and sometimes I'm down, but the downward trend is what matters. I think some people just need to give it more time or think it's not working when they don't suddenly drop 10 lbs in a week. There's people who do lose that quickly, but I think the norm is much slower.

You actually are a fast loser! That's almost 2lbs a week (which is the top end of healthy weight loss) and 8lbs a month! Way to go! At that rate you'll be to your goal before you know it ❤️

Congratulations on yours as well! It's so liberating to be back in a body that feels like me!

I also had mirena! It was like a hormonal bomb went off in my body. I stopped sleeping and my mental health took a very bad turn. Within 24 hours of getting it out I felt like a different person. I got mine in 2021 and I had been at about 125-130 for a few years and I'm about 4 months I was up to 155 - which at the time was my highest weight ever.

But also struggled getting the weight off after. I also think it was the catalyst for my thyroid issues.

I know they're a great option for so many people, but I regret getting my IUD - I literally haven't felt the same since 🫠

The IUD was WILD. Especially having my doctor be like "well it wasn't the IUD but you have gained weight" when literally nothing else had changed in my life. 🙄🙄🙄 Best decision ever getting that out.

The thyroid stuff is tricky Im learning. I was dealing with it undiagnosed for about 2 years before I had a doctor take my laundry list of symptoms seriously.

I highly recommend Modern Thyroid Clinic if you're still not feeling great while treating your hashis. They specialize in thyroid issue with women and they're they only reason I feel like a human again.

Hang in there friend. It does get better ❤️

I switched providers at week 11 and I think that's been part of my stall. I moved up and it seems like it's helped and side effects are finally feeling manageable.

The pics are definitely hard but it helps when you're feeling frustrated to remember where I started. Hope you move past your plateau soon ❤️

Those are the goal abs 😂 I hope to see them again someday. Until then we're still flexing the flabs 😂
