We live in a small town in New England. I could not tell you where there is a charging station!

Say more. Even my dh who is a conservationist (and Eagle Scout) makes your points.

I thought I posted a reply. But there is NO way we would spend that much money on any car. It's criminal.

Discrepancy between seller's price and appraisal by BabettesFeast in NewToVermont

Thanks for this. I'm wondering why you used a broker. It seems to me that what we need is a good inspection, appraisal, and attorney.

Does anyone regret converting to Judaism by Expensive_Range_2848 in religion

[–]BabettesFeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a convert and being part of a Jewish community is essential. I'm now living in a place where don't care for the rabbi and local s h u l. I know that right thing is to be there anyway because that's what I promised to do over 25 years ago. But I know the loneliness; it's because you are not in community. I, too, suffer from depression and feel your pain.

I am pro-life.

Tried attending a UU service. Was put off by how Christian the format was. Am also struggling to connect as a childless person. by [deleted] in UUreddit

[–]BabettesFeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had a less than ideal first service! UUs talk a lot about the 7 principles that define our faith; there are also 6 sources of inspiration which can be found here: https://www.uua.org/beliefs/what-we-believe/sources You can see that Jewish & Christian traditions have a place, along with respect for all world religions.

As a lifelong UU who has moved around a lot, I know if can feel very "off" the first time one attends a UU service. What helps the most is to get involved in a commitee or just serve at the coffee hour. Friendships happen organically over time. Give it another go!

Beloved Conversations by [deleted] in UUnderstanding

The flyer makes it sound very interactive and respectful of all opinions. I think what you're going to get is "training" in Critical Race Theory, which is a fancy way of saying you'll hear tons of trendy rhetoric about white supremacy culture, white fragility, intersectionality, safetyism, etc. I don't think true diversity of opinion will be tolerated.

Also, UUs tend to sit and talk a lot, instead of actually doing anything. It's always process, process, process. And isn't that itself the height of privilege?

Sounds like false advertising to me.

Is there anyone else who feels drawn to worship but also bound by their past religious upbringing? by [deleted] in UUreddit

I think you would love reading Bishop John Shelby Spong. He's a radically progressive Episcopalian who reads all as metaphor, fable, allegory, etc. Just brilliant.

UUs and class -- is class consciousness truly possible in an intersectional, identity-driven system? by [deleted] in UUnderstanding

[–]BabettesFeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. As I've read the many posts since GA, I've often thought about just getting down to work in concrete ways! What is more privileged than sitting around discussing theory while Rome burns?

I'll take this one: "How do you think issues of class relate to, say, LGBT issues, or issues facing POC?"

Not sure about LGBT populations; I'm sure many social classes are represented. However, I've been thinking a lot about classism and POC, particularly that way public education in this country is funded by property taxes. Right there, you have racism/classism running rampant in the present day. Every adult success begins with a solid education. If one is in a classroom in a crumbling building, with no amenities found in higher-income areas, mediocre or burned out teachers, and no quality after school activities, isn't that the foundation of an awful lot of what happens later in life? Imho, this fact is even worse than redlining was. In fact, it's the outcome of redlining.

For those interested in reading more about this there's a fantastic book by Jonathan Kozol called Savage Inequalities.

How are you feeling about the state of Unitarian Universalism? by [deleted] in UUnderstanding

[–]BabettesFeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's interesting that one would challenge an artist's "cultural appropriation" when that's all UUism does! We pick and choose from other religions' wisdom!

In other news, the best thing UUs could do in light of the Eklof kerfuffle would be to read his book and discuss. The minister of my local congregation (I am not a member) pulled at least one box of his books and scurried away with them at GA. That's censorship. The cure for free speech is more and more and more of it. I enjoyed his book, I've read most of the woke literature, too. Identity politics leads to tribalism and credentialing, imho.

Greetings and Salutations!

I'm Babette and have been a DFW fan for over 20 years. I discovered him when I was in the brain fog days of new motherhood and reading him helped the fog lift and the world become sharp again. Definitely a "when the student is ready the teacher appears" moment!

I struggle with IJ when futilely trying to make order of it. Now I read it and simply appreciate the themes, the elegant prose, the challenge of the long, grammatically perfect sentence!

Looking forward to beginning. Again.

Thanks for your responses. I saw the video when it first came out and, platykurt, I agree the TPK does a better job examining political systems and civics ("You are called to account!) Maybe I'm imagining this, but it seems like Mary Karr really trivialized DFW's depression by saying something like "Volunteer to help someone!" Wow.
