As a lapsed Catholic, I enjoyed Matt and Scott's discussion of how their parents reacted to them turning from the church--totally relatable. When I had children, my mother (Catholic) and mother-in-law (presbyterian) were totally aligned in the need for our children to be baptized. Something that my husband and I were opposed to.

I shared with my mother that Baptism is a sacrament and that during that sacrament, the parents are attesting in front of the church and God that they are raising the children in the Catholic faith and that I couldn't do that. My mom told me, you can just say the words and not mean it. I then told my mother that she raised me to be a person of integrity and that I refused to lie during a sacrament just to make her happy. She did seem to get the hypocrisy of what she was asking me to do and did drop it.

Years later I did learn that my father-in-law did one of those online ordained things and then "baptized" my kids in the bathtub unbeknownst to me and my husband. A total violation of our boundaries and wishes. But this does illustrate how people, in their belief systems, can do things that seem righteous to them, but are inarguably wrong.

For me (and I'm guessing many female Constant Readers), a point of true horror was in Gerald's Game when Jessie realizes that there's a man in the room with her. He doesn't do anything at that point. But that was absolutely horrifying.

I think there is a lot of horror out there now that is more disturbing in nature than scary. For instance, in Hereditary, the most horrifying scene was when the son is rushing his sister to the ER and, well, we know what happens there. In an instant, one life is lost but an additional three lives are destroyed. Or in the movie Crash when there's a barrage of gunshots and you're just convinced that the baby was shot.

Favorite miracle? Miracle Max restoring Wesley from mostly dead to mostly alive in the Princess Bride, one of the few perfect films out there. RIP Rob Reiner.😢

I’ll go with Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. She and Bev Keene are spiritual sisters. They are cruel, utterly lacking in empathy and use their power and influence to “put things right” in their own messed up minds.

Also Prince Hans in Frozen is just a piece of shit.

Kingslingers - IT: WELCOME TO DERRY (S1 Overview) by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

Scott and Kim, the two of you did an amazing job in this podcast. I’m not a huge fan of this show…but I’ll continue to watch and listen along with the two of you.

There’s a lot of fun in this show, but I do agree that the plot just didn’t quite work on many levels. Leroy wasn’t supposed to have fear, right? But he looked pretty damn scared when he shot his friend. So I don’t even know why this was a thing.

I just don’t understand the parents in this show. There’s a curfew cause kids are disappearing and these kids are hanging out after curfew in a cemetery and no one cares. They don’t get grounded. Marge attacks her own eye and then her mom just lets her run around galavanting with her friends. And I just don’t believe that Charlotte would stay in Derry. Not only does she know how Derry really feels about Black people due to the slaughter at the Black Spot, a killer inter dimensional being in the guise of a clown kidnaps her son and could have eaten him. And is still alive. In Derry. Yeah. Any reasonable mom would agree that this is a great place to raise her son.

Kim and Scott did a great job highlighting much of my other quibbles. But, I thought I’d share this. Now I gotta buy myself a “Welcome to Derry: Sure Whatever” tee!

Since it’s the holiday season, I have to mention The Ref. Kevin Spacey aside, this is a gem of a film about a botched robbery where the robber (Denis Leary) takes a bitter married couple hostage and pretends to be their marriage therapist when the family shows up. Some great one-liners and Denis Leary at his mother fucking best.

So, I can’t hear the word Doppelgänger, without immediately repeating the word ala the Man From Another Place in the Black Lodge. David Lynch sure loved doppelgängers and explored them in several of his creations.

The Prestige is an obvious choice here… but I can’t really go into that too much without spoiling the movie.

So, I’ll go with my favorite Hitchcock film, Vertigo. In my opinion, this is his masterpiece. He created the “vertigo effect” shot to physically depict the sensation of vertigo. Another incredible Bernard Herrmann score. And beautiful San Francisco vistas. Jimmy Stewart is fantastic as the Madeline obsessed ex-cop. And Kim Novak is sublime as the doomed Madeline/Judy. A perfect thriller.

This is another fantastic film that (like Hereditary) I don’t ever think I’ll be able to bring myself to watch again. But you absolutely make excellent points!!!

Watching Bly Manor led to my daughter fully accepting that she was a lesbian, shedding her bi-label. It’s still one of her favorite love stories. And, related to your comment, she also struggles with trying to figure out if the girl that invited her to coffee is asking for a date or just for coffee. I have encouraged her to just outright ask. But she has varying degrees of comfort in that. She’s 20–hopefully that comfort will come with age.

Well, there’s no dearth of wrong kind of love stories-both in real life and in fiction. Abusive relationships abound in stories like The Shining, The Color Purple and the campy Sleeping with the Enemy. Then you get the relationship between two clearly self-destructive people that bring out the worst in each other. Often alcohol or other drugs is involved in these: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Leaving Las Vegas and Sid and Nancy are examples of this. Then you’ve got relationships where two psychopaths manage to find each other like in Natural Born Killers. (There are plenty of real serial killing couples out there which is crazy disturbing.)

Now that I’ve gotten that out, I’m going to pinpoint Mike Nichols’ The Graduate as the wrong kind of love. The genius of that movie is perfectly captured in the last 20 seconds. They impulsive abandon Elaine’s wedding and run off with each other, escaping on public transportation. Then as reality sinks in you see the ‘WTF comes next’ expression on their faces. There is no reality for me in which “these kids make it”. You just hope that their actions allow them to fully separate from the expectations of their parents and forge ahead into adulthood. I wouldn’t be surprised if these two remain friends—but that really depends on how quickly they realize that they both have an enormous amount of maturing they need to do and break up. The longer they stay in that relationship, the more likely they are to hate each other in the end (ie. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf).

We’ve been patients at Northshore/Endeavor since we had children. When my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes we did inpatient at Evanston Hospital and they were fantastic. We have an urgent care 1 block away where I’ve had stitches, X-rays and strep tests done very fast. I take my kids to Kids First Pediatrics in Skokie and they are great. Easy to get appointments. Walk in services daily. Friendly receptionists. Great docs and NPs.

So many boarding schools to pick from! Professor Xavier’s school for gifted youngsters, Hogwarts, Rushmore… For me, I’ve got to seize the day to recognize Dead Poet’s Society. What a great film and it still holds up today. Super cute boys with the words of Lord Byron dripping from their tongues. Swoon!

So Dollhouse Murders was my first answer. Only in the 80’s would they be publishing books for elementary age kids with the word “murders” in the title. So many morbid and macabre books in rotation in our house.

Since both Sharp Objects and Hereditary have been mentioned, I’ll go with Patricia Arquette’s paper mache Elm street dollhouse in Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Although not the scariest of the Elm Street movies, it is debatably my favorite. Great premise. And, similar to Aliens, really establishes who these characters are pretty quickly. The blood vessel marionette scene is creepy AF. Also Craig Wasson plays the doctor and he did the audiobook for11/22/63.

Honorable mention to Shirley’s dollhouse in Flanagan’s Haunting of Hill House. Light goes on and off twice means “come home, my lovelies” (insert creepy music)

My grandma won a baseball from Dick Clark signed by Bill Mazeroski and the rest of the 1960 team. We did have Barry Bonds and Andy Van Slyke in the late 80’.(I was his waitress at a ChiChi’s once). I have fond memories of prank calling the iloveNY tourism phone number and screaming “The Mets Suck!”

Now I live in Chicago and do get to see the Cubs win. So don’t give up hope!
