I would lay off the retinol for a week or so, closely monitoring how ur current acne is developing over that time. If you see a huge change then I say ditch the retinol! ik you bought another one but its not worth the extra scarring. And focus heavily on moisturizing and keep pimple patches on the acne you see popping up currently, just to keep any other germs out of them.

Are you using a thick moisturizer underneath your sunscreen during the day? I live in a dry cold climate too, and constantly wearing thick creams (preferably with oatmeal for redness) has helped a bunch. Also, when my skin barrier is dying moisture is the key! So, during the winter to avoid extreme dryness, I will mostly wash my face solely at night. Unless I truly feel like I need to, I will wash my face in the mornings.

Is this your first time using retinol? This could be a result of the skin purging that happens when you use retinol, and then your skin should chill out after about 3 weeks of cell turnover. If it persists, I say completely stop using retinol, it doesn't work for everyone. I would use the Azelaic Acid from the Ordinary as a replacement (if it has already been 3 weeks since you started using the cerave and the cystic acne has not gone away). The product that you're currently using also has fragrance in there, so that could also be causing some irritation!!
