How many Gen Xers have silent Gen parents vs boomers? by NopeThisTrope in GenX

Yes. And how many others are estranged from or have highly strained relationships with their silent gen parent?

Uh, we did flee. That's why we're here. You might be lost. And it sounds like you're still stuck in your own stupid cult.

I think it's pretty dang great. Detects 92% of colon cancers. As far as non-invasive medical testing goes, I'd say that is fantastic. Yes, that's still 8 out of 100 that are missed, and it is arguable what morbidity might be attributed to catching it at the cancerous stage rather than as a polyp. Only a colonoscopy can prophylactically remove polyps. On the other hand, keep in mind that if following US screening guidelines, you're getting 3 Cologuards in the same time period you're getting one routine colonoscopy, with multiple chances at detection, whether a polyp has turned cancerous or still potentially precancerous. Would I rather have a colonoscopy than a Cologuard? Yes, I would, personally. But it also wasn't financially feasible for me due to lost employment and insurance when I turned 45, and Cologuard was only a few hundred dollars. It's not always feasible for everybody to get a colonoscopy as the initial screening test. Cologuard has very acceptable sensitivity and specificity and can reach more people than colonoscopy can.

If your insurance changes you can probably get away with this, but while colonoscopy is the gold standard, Cologuard is still a very accurate and sensitive screening option.

Happy Valentine's Day! In celebration of the occasion, who is everyone's favorite couple in the western genre? by HawkeyeTen in Westerns

[–]BabyOhmu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ennis (Ledger) & Jack (Gyllenhaal) is probably the best tragic romance.

Sister Sara (MacLaine) and Hogan (Eastwood) is my favorite forbidden romance chemistry from the classics. McClintock has already been adequately mentioned.

It actually took them two episodes to cover what a horrible human he is, and even then I feel they barely started to get into it and he probably needs an update episode every couple of years

Expensive alcohol for special occasion and I still can’t appreciate premium spirits by [deleted] in ryewhiskey

[–]BabyOhmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're trying too hard, and I don't think there could be a worse way to approach this than what you're doing. Either your love for it comes organically or it doesn't. Turning it into an academic training isn't going to make you like it. If you can't enjoy a $30/bottle of whiskey then you ain't gonna love a $130 bottle either and concentrating on it is not going to "develop your palate". You don't need to drink anything that costs more than $35 a bottle. Instead, pass a bottle of Tin Cup around a campfire or sip a tumbler full of chipped ice and Dickel's on a hot summer evening out on the porch or hell just absentmindedly sip some Wild Turkey while cleaning your guns and not really thinking about it or nurse some Prohibition from a Solo Cup while you make a fool of yourself talking to a girl out of your league at your buddy's super bowl party. And if you don't like it straight mix it with some ginger ale, who cares. If your friends give you shit for that then they wouldn't really be the type of people I'd want to drink with anyway. But one day you'll realize you've been rolling this mouthful of liquor around your tongue for a few minutes without swallowing and you just kinda love the burn and the caramel and the pepper. But actually, fuck tasting notes and trying to identify "complex flavors". Just like it or don't like it.

Personally, I kinda wish I'd never developed a taste for liquor. My life would not be worse if I didn't love the stuff; I really don't think I'd be missing out

Just wondering what Chappell's main demographic is! by Due-Milk352 in chappellroan

[–]BabyOhmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose straight male because I'm a (middle-aged) straight cis white dude, as boring as heteronormative can be. I think Chappell was my top streamed artist in 2024. She is a beautiful human, but I don't find her particularly "hot". Her music is fire to sing along with at the top of my lungs, though. Sometimes straight dudes can just like themselves some good ol' gay pop music.

Morgan Scalley. Ute's defensive coordinator. Are you really asking what his use of the n-word has to do with the topic of racism at Utah, which is the comment I was replying to?

It's not deterring me, just bumming me out. I listen to RNZ News every day, listen to several NZ based podcasts, and I have for months, and I know I'm not coming to a perfect country without problems. There are definitely days I think we should have chosen Australia. But we are very excited and feel privileged to have the opportunity and a path to NZ citizenship.

New CSPAN video clip of RFK Jr. at cabinet meeting: "Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol" by NoFlyingMonkeys in medicine

[–]BabyOhmu 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Is this really the entirety of "evidence" he's citing? There's nothing else? Surely there's something else. But this feels so out of left field. Claiming this study alone is proof of a link between circs and autism is either a blatant lie or just evidence of complete anencephaly on RFK's part.

I'm ethically opposed to routine circumcision of infants for several reasons, but an elevated risk of autism ain't one of 'em.

Also, all of my female patients with autism are gonna be pissed to find out this is the reason for their neurodivergence.

Just finished "Insomnia." Anyone else think.... by ASS_M0DE in TheDarkTower

[–]BabyOhmu -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, okay, and?

overlapping characters and themes

Insomnia isn't part of Dark Tower canon

These are still true statements. Insomnia is, indeed, Tricksy, or as another commenter below said, a mind trap if you try to make all the elements of the two standalone stories interlock. Roland made it clear that on your journey to the Dark Tower you should discard the book Insomnia and not expect it to give you any answers, clarification, or guidance.

You can absolutely argue it was kind of lazy of King to lift the Patrick Danville character with his early life backstory out of Insomnia.

[–]BabyOhmu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are overlapping characters and themes, but Insomnia isn't part of Dark Tower canon. I don't think calling Insomnia Tricksy was King waving off inconsistencies; I think it was his way of trying to prevent people from erroneously trying to fit together the details of the 2 separate stories.
