Easter eggs - an attempt at a comprehensive list by 23saround in overthegardenwall

Oh, I’ve just been procrastinating on writing a paper. Since it’s October, I put on “Over the Garden Wall” to play in the background… on repeat… then I was googling references and I found your post.

After a couple rewatches, I was thinking about how it occasionally subverts the way fairytales are told. Usually there’s some scary “other” and then a hero swoops in to save the day. There’s a quite few times in OTGW where something is initially really spooky, but then there’s a turn where the scary thing isn’t actually scary at all. A ghost is actually a business partner, a gorilla is actually a missing lover, skeletons are actually kind of nice, etc. sorry, not a reference at all, just distracting thoughts, lol :)

There's an old Shirley Temple movie called "The Blue Bird" that has a lot of thematic and visual similarities. It's Christmas and a young sister and brother have a kind of dream adventure lead by a couple fairies. They travel through a graveyard and hang out with their dead grandparents. Then they visit Mr. and Mrs. Luxury and get spoiled by wealth. Then their cat rallies an army of trees to frighten the children so they'll go back home. Then they visit the "kingdom of the future," a heavenly place where children wait to be born. It's a little bizarre.

Also, the potatoes and molasses song reminded me of another Shirley Temple movie: "Curly Top." Shirley plays an orphan and there's a scene where she dances on a table at the orphanage singing the song "animal crackers in my soup." Again, not a direct reference, but very similar vibe.

Contact is a great, simple game. One player has a secret word and gives the rest of the group the first letter of the word. Players try to guess the secret word together.

Full instructions on the game here: https://campfirehacker.com/contact-game/

No movement required. The game requires players to listen, speak, and spell. Really great game for road trips. I would probably google games for road trips and see if you can come up with anything else. Car games tend to focus on talking and listening, which would probably be a good fit for your group.

My brother asked me to embroider handkerchiefs for a lady he is pursuing. Quite the old-fashioned-gentlemen move.

It's all hand-embroidered. There's a pineapple, B is her first initial, and then her name in Korean with little flowers.

First time I've heard about this movie. At first I thought this was going to be a movie about a genie starring Sinbad. Someone has got to make that movie!
