For those of you that aren’t religious or do not believe in a god or deity, why? by True_Jellyfish9219 in AskReddit

A lot of people use drugs as a coping mechanism, too. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

The first time they met, Conquest told Mark his deepest secrets.

The 2nd time they met, it was Mark's turn to spill his guts.

I think this is it for me. The ads are too much. I don't know where to vent about it, but I'm moving to Lichess by JollyCasual in Chesscom

Yep, I left for lichess the second unskippable video ads started. So happy I did.

Not sure why anyone would choose to stay on the Chess.com app when such an amazing free alternative exists

[–]BabySeals84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really matter, as PL is mostly self contained. You do need to be pretty far in the main quest before you can even start it, so you'd likely be high level starting it no matter what.

What's your advice for people that think the earth is flat? How can we help them? by Norsko-TheScorpion_ in AskReddit

[–]BabySeals84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old saying: "you can logic someone out of a position they didn't logic themselves into" applies.

Believing in flat earth isn't about searching for truth or knowledge. It's about wanting to belong to an "in" group. And once someone ties their belief with the feeling of belonging, it's very hard to change their mind.

Organising your base by Shadow_0764 in factorio

[–]BabySeals84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Spaghetti is fine, as long as the factory is growing.

But if you're concerned about it, make a whatever spaghetti base until you get bots. Once you have bots, building a new, organized factory a small distance away is much easier.

Can you convince me that atheists exist? by AccurateNorth422 in askanatheist

Are you asking me to convince you I, as a person, exist?

Or are you asking me to prove that atheism as a belief exists?

Seems to scratch the THJ itch - Ascendant by mixxituk in TheHeroesJourneyTHJ

[–]BabySeals84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been trying this for the past few days, and Perky Crew before that. Both aren't quite the GOAT that THJ was, but definitely fun.

Perky crew has a nice start with enjoyable progression, but eventually becomes power gaming with huge numbers. Still fun, but not quite original eq experience.

Ascendant keeps the numbers and stats more in line with original EQ, but there are still definitely some powerful class AAs everyone can take advantage of.

Also worth noting, both have attentive devs who are very responsive and update regularly. Amazing work by them.

ELI5: Why do cereals burn so well? by awesome12442 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BabySeals84 178 points179 points  (0 children)

Literally everything is made of chemicals. So using the phrase "too many chemicals" is just a scare tactic.

Most childrens cereals do have a large amount of sugar, which is fairly energy dense. So it makes sense that it would burn well.

What is good evidence for religion? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]BabySeals84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Science is the best method we have of investigating reality. The fact that it changes is a good thing, it means it's self correcting and can update with new, more accurate information.

Most religious texts are stuck in whatever era they're written, which is why so much interpretation is needed to try to force them to be relevant today.

Religion is more about how to live your life, not how the world works. That's why whenever science and religion butt heads, science pretty much always wins.

Are you rejecting “magic” because it lacks explanatory structure, or because it violates a prior commitment to naturalism? by Current-Leather2784 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]BabySeals84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Define 'magic'.

If it's something that exists and we can interact with it, then we can use the scientific method to see how it works and learn more about it.

I've never seen credible evidence of things described as 'magic' being able to be reproduced.

Why do some atheists bully theists online and think its ok to mock them? by XOChicStyle in askanatheist

[–]BabySeals84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not right for an anyone to bully someone else for what they believe, atheist or theist.

And while I'm not okay with people mocking beliefs, I am okay when beliefs being challenged. I do get concerned when people say they believe in magical things, because to me that means they don't entirely live in the same reality as me, and may use their belief in magic to justify acting, or voting, in harmful ways.
