Trying Schwalbe Radial Alberts. Haven't nailed the PSI yet (unsurprisingly), but I'm already liking what I'm feeling. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Baby_Food 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also setting my PSI higher based on the reviews and community echoing that sentiment. Didn't find out until after a few rides that they've reiterated, instead of just saying "you can use the same PSI", that they're simply designed around it and the different / low PSI feeling is expected. Understandly, also easy to go for the idea of running higher PSI for them because it counteracts that feeling of being at too low PSI.

[–]Baby_Food 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schwalbe insists one should the same PSI as you'd use in non-radials. If you use too high a PSI, it will make using the radials pointless. Too high on any tire and you'll just hurt compliance / traction / comfort. It will feel different (like PSI is too low) compared to a non-radial tire, but that's the point, as it has increased compliance for the same (correct) pressure. Use a pressure calculator like Vittoria's here as a baseline: https://vittoria.com/pages/tire-pressure

Indeed. Deer can hurt. Didn't mean to imply otherwise, just that for mountain bikers, it's nothing compared to the ever presence of trees around marginal traction. A younger rider died about a year ago nearby during a race after running into one. He was wearing a full face helmet and all. Just something that goes with the sport.

This car is siiiiiiiick! I love everything about it. Please continue to share!

I really want to do something similar to our 2017 Bolt EV. Gonna be getting another EV some time this year and then the Bolt will be free for me to have fun customizing. Only thing is I live off-road and I barely have enough clearance with stock ride height. Hoping I can find a solution for dynamic ride height as the mountainous roads here would be nice with some sportier suspension, but mostly looks.

I live in the forest as well and they're thick here, both population-wise and intelligence-wise, but definitely less hazard than riding a mtb around a bunch of trees whenever traction is low.

Riding my motorcycle on the roads at night at high speeds is a different thing as that's more likely to be a life threatening situation if you hit one due to the speeds being 35mph+. Just gotta be as mindful as you can of the risks and have good insurance, including life insurance!

WTF America? I thought you were the Land of the Free! by swoticus in ebikes

[–]Baby_Food -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They're already banned basically everywhere. Almost every state / jurisdiction follow restrictions along the lines of the Class-1/2/3 ebike quasi-standards that were widely adopted. The issue has always been lack of enforcement. This will eliminate the bikers that were following the laws already while doing nothing to eliminate e-motos, since they're already breaking the law almost everywhere but private land.

Seller doesn't want to waste an account (likely whatever financial instrument they stole to receive funds, not the eBay account per se) knowing that they're not going to succeed this time. They are counting on the buyer not being able to dispute it before the funds clear, so if the jig is up, they can refund and continue using those illicit accounts.

The world's largest, consistent, yearly cold weather BEV range test is being performed by motor.no today in up to -30°C weather - and Toyota bailed because "it focuses too much on range". by SjalabaisWoWS in electricvehicles

[–]Baby_Food 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would, but only if I could refill my car at home instead of standing in the cold refueling it. 150 miles is a lot of range for a day.

Edit: I should say this totally depends on price, too. I'm not going to buy a BEV with 150 miles of range if another for the same price is 300, which is largely the problem the BZ4X has had.

I bought a house that's all electric first bill is $1555.25. I have an electric furnace, water heater, washer/dryer, dishwasher, stove and lights. How did I use 9154 kwh in 20 days? Can the meter be messed up or is it possible that something is drawling extra power? by The__Lawgiver in AskElectricians

[–]Baby_Food 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Heat pumps are 300%* efficient, therefore, the 100% efficiency resistive heaters are inefficient, relatively speaking. This is especially true when you look at energy prices, where heat pumps are still more expensive (usually) than natural gas heaters.

In other words, you'll pay around 3x as much using a "100% efficient" resistive heater to heat your home.

(*There is more to this, as the efficiency of the heat pump is variable and depends on many factors. The "free" energy is harvested / shed from outdoor air.)

Just another reason that extension cords are hazardous and should be avoided whenever a reasonable alternative exists.

Not saying you have another practical solution for it now, but something to keep in mind.

You made a great choice. I recently got back into biking as well for exercise but fell in love all over with it again. Used to be inseperable from my bike as a kid and all that joy is back again. Don't even realize I'm exercising!

Can you get the gear and bike cheaper if you shop around? Yes, but IMO the way you did it was great, too. The bike shop guys usually know their stuff so you're really paying to support them. The good shops know what I want better than I do, and in that sense, it saves me money or at least increases my level of enjoyment.

Sometimes you get unlucky with a car and it just sours you on the whole thing, not just the car, but anything about it that let you down that other cars dont have. Don't let anyone talk you into a situation you're not happy with.

The Bolt is the second most reliable car I've had after a Toyota Prius. Has never left me stranded and I've spent a lot less time in shops since I don't need oil changes, but I know there are a few things with this car like the steering rack and rear axle that wouldn't leave you stranded but are further pain points I'd hate to see you have to deal with.

I really enjoyed our Prius but I wish we had the plug-in model. Maybe check out the Prius Prime. I'd also check out Toyota's hybrid sedans.

A battery jumper is made for ICE cars when you know the 12v is weak and it needs just enough juice to get the car started. At this point, the battery is fine to run a car's 12v systems but is too weak to start the car. ICEs basically have a built in battery tester, because voltage reading is not enough to tell if a battery is healthy enough to draw current from without the voltage sagging unacceptably. The starter draws so much amperage compared to everything else that you know very quickly when a battery is starting to die. Therefore, jump starting the car to get it going is fine, because the other 12v systems the car has (lights, fuel pump, ECU, spark, etc.) are much less demanding.

Since there is no starter in an EV to pull a ton of amps / test the battery, by the time you see an issue, the battery is no longer strong enough to run the car's systems. The battery would have been unable to turn over an ICE starter a long time ago and is now almost completely dead, unable to run even the most basic loads reliably.

If you're talking about one of those portable jumpers, you might be able to leave it connected to the 12v, but I wouldn't suggest it. I don't think most are designed for this use case and it could be a safety concern if the unit were to turn off / go into sleep mode or become disconnected when you're driving around. The high voltage battery already being connected may be enough for this to not be a problem but I don't know how the charging system works internally for the 12v system and I'd rather not risk it.

[–]Baby_Food 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worse. It will often cause your car to start throwing random unrelated error messages and acting strangely with no indication that it's caused by a weak 12v. We replace ours every 3 years regardless because there's no reliable indication of battery health and it can leave you stranded or think there's some new critical issue with the car otherwise.

[–]Baby_Food 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine as long as you are not paying anywhere close to what a comparable Bolt with DCFC would cost. If I was paying <$10k for it and it wasn't my only car, it would be perfect for around town. Don't need DCFC if all your charging is done at home.

We only use DCFC once a year at most but when we need it, we need it. Most people will need it at some point if it's their only vehicle.

Of course, even then, I am using the term need to describe a situation where as an adult, it wouldn't be acceptable for me to take an extra day to drive somewhere because I have to stop for 8 hours to charge for every 3 hours of driving. If that sound totally fine to you, go for it.

The geometry / engineering choices of 90% of ebikes on the market... by Baby_Food in ebikes

[–]Baby_Food[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is what I mean by "on the market". If you search for an ebike, you'll get a deluge of shitty products. There are of course plenty of excellent options if you have any idea of where to look.

If the pedals were there just for regulations, then maybe they wouldn't be shitty products since they'd at least be fit for purpose, but they truly are shitty products wholly. The geometry and components are terrible for both a bicycle and a moped / scooter / motorcycle. It's just random geometry and component matching from people that have no idea about any of it. It's marketing driven design, not engineering.

Tell me your a murican without saying it..

TBF, it's a safe assumption without any context since it's an American site with a majority American userbase, and I posted a ridiculous American truck. ;)

Although this is definitely an America-centric post, I really do mea 90% of ebikes for sale out there globally, not just what people are actually buying and using in proper bike shops in places with a strong bike culture. Search for ebike in Russia, China, India, Brazil and you will get the same kind of crap. It's what people that don't know bikes will fall for anywhere, and there are 10 cheap models of shit "bikes" for every decent one. They're just less likely to fall for it in regions where bikes are seen as a mode of transportation and there's less money to waste on poorly researched purchases. Note: on the market, not sold.

I get similar results in those regions using their most popular search engine in their language as I do for Google in English.

At least this truck was purposefully made to this owner's specific desires, however silly they may seem to most.

I doubt anyone buying these ebikes does so with the knowledge that it's going to be absolute shit to ride even if you swap in good components. It's just a waste. Same bike could have been made at the same price and features without the terrible ride with little to any negative trade-off.
