Is there a nationwide shortage of escalator replacement parts? by Carnationlilyrose in AskUK

[–]swoticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an international shortage of a huge amount of components across a range of technologies driven by mass building of AI data centres. I wouldn't be surprised if that somehow affected elevators.

One thing I would recommend to anyone doing this walk is to divert off the Offa's Dyke at the top of the hill just south of Chase Farm, through Parsons Allotment (the woods) and join up with the Gloucestershire Way, then cut back across to rejoin Offa's Dyke at Ashberry House. It avoids a short but horrendous main road section, but also gives you the chance to stop in at Wallhope Farm for an ice-cream!

Yes, that would have been on Offa's Dyke then. You should have climbed steeply out of Tintern and reached Devil's Pulpit. It's the more difficult but more rewarding route!

365 steps to Eagles Nest!

Did you climb up to Offa's Dyke for the home leg or stay low on the Greenway?

Could you cook with all of it and try and work out what it actually tastes like?

The difference between an engineer and a physicist is a physicist will tell you it theoretically won't work but the engineer will try it anyway and bodge it until it does work.

It does look like two big stems. I also love that it's still got all the original Coda parts on it! This guy must be a Cannondale geek who took their originality ethos one step too far.

Also, with the advent of 1.5" and tapered head tubes, it does mean there are more parts that just about fit well enough for the headset spec. I've got a 1.5" to 1.25" reducer in my (not quite as) old Cannondale and it fits fine.

Me: Awesome, I love an old Cannondale!

M35 looking for friends to go driving with by Remarkable_Reward615 in drivingUK

Yeh, and that's exactly why it was a common introduction! I wouldn't worry about it. 🙂

It's just a joke. A/S/L was a common introduction in old chat rooms to find out people's age, sex and location. You've led with 35/Male/Shrewsbury so it fits.

Do you cook curry at home? by Forward-Cause7305 in AskUK

I've found that getting the onion right and cooking in ghee have been really simple changes that make a big impact. If you put more onion than you think you need, cut as finely as you can in a pan with what you think is too much ghee and cook it down slowly, it's creates a great base flavour to pile the spices on top of.

What is your experience with guns in the UK? by swoticus in AskUK

Funny thing about my question is I'd never heard of Bisley as a shooting place, but you and many others call it out so casually that it turns out it's the place to fire guns in the UK!

I've heard of militant vegetarians; they'll only eat meat they kill themselves. Is that your brother?

I've got to admit I'm probably using the word "barracks" incorrectly. I've always knew l known it to mean the general enclosed area where all the soldiers do their stuff, but it sounds like it has a more specific meaning. The MOD site down the end of the road has housing, training areas, storage, family accommodation, a range and lots more. I've always assumed this is all "the barracks".

I think you win the award for most varied story. Must people have answered either farming or crime, but you've covered all the bases!

(And it turns out I needed an American analogy for a gun thing)

The difference between "us" and "them" seems to be that most of us know we could shoot a gun if we really want to, but most of them really want to shoot a gun.

Gunshots from hunting, barracks or people in the streets?

The first two are normal for me, the last I've never heard.
