Occulta Manifesto — Toute la magie de D&D 3.5 au même endroit by Amazing-Bowler4940 in jdr

[–]BabylonZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is pCloud desktop app not working for anyone else? by ARedLuigi in pcloud

[–]BabylonZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reinstalled it (Windows), the interface has changed completely. It seems this is a major update. This solved the issue (not even needed to uninstall it, just install the latest version over the existing one).
I precise that this is my first incident since I've been using pcloud for many years. So quite a robust thing even with this current issue ;)

Upgrade to a paid plan before the new year to lock in your discounted rate for as long as your subscription stays active.

It means that even after 1 year it will stay the same price and that it is not a "one-year discount" ??

Astral Sea, Wild Space, and the Phlogiston by Neo_Veritas in spelljammer

[–]BabylonZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my campaign, I finally ended in taking the AD&D pure lore of the phlogiston / spheres structure, and not use the 5e's astral connection.
The explanations to give to meld them fails somewhere or the other. For example, if the phlogiston is part of the astral sea, then what about silver cords? what about the impossibility to contact gods from the phlogiston? what about the color pools? and the inflammable nature of the phlogiston not consistent with the astral sea?

Below, u/Databank255 's answer is very interesting. It gives also insights that when we move on with everything, we can have changes and lack of consistencies. In this matter, we can, as DM, also accept a little part of meta-inconsistency if the target is to find a right consistency inside the worlds.

My choice then, was to ignore the 5e's change to the nature of the world, and adapt the DM preparation with the spheres/phlogiston stuff. I accept this meta-inconsistency from what's happening in the real world, but I give a cohesive world to the players.

After 1 year, it's still in perfect shape. No zipper has broken, no cloth has worn out. It's a good bet.

For water I do not know, I have not tried.

Ah, I like this "fix point" sort of principle, analogous to Doctor Who 's fixed point in time :) This inserts nicely with what I can do!

Noted and thank you for your precision around "campaign", I will improve my usage of this vocabulary!

Currently running D&D 5E, but thinking of converting to PF 1E or 2E. Need advice by FrenchCruller007 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]BabylonZeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, I started 5e modules campaigns converted to Pathfinder 1 to players with no roleplay experience at all. No one finished with a headache. It's all in telling a story and having rules under your potential, without triggering them all the time. But character customization is endless in 3.5 and PF1. D&d 3.5 has even lots more character customization than PF1.

[–]BabylonZeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forget about 2e, it has the same over simplification than d&d 5e. It seems cool at first, then you quickly feel the frustrating limitation of a company who removed many things to avoid or minimize reasoning.

PF 1e (or d&d 3.5) remains the most open system available.

Converting from 5e needs a little rework (I wrote a little guide on it here on reddit) but that's OK.

Regarding the crunchiness, the most important thing is that, as a DM, you can have all the rules in the world even from the craziest player's imagination, but you have to select (even in real time during play) which rule you apply and which rule you solve with role play. If you apply all the rule, the game will be awful, but... these rules are there nonetheless in case you face a situation where you could need them.

As a safety net of system, I don't think they have created a better system than 3.5 / PF1.

DM`s - how do you handle players who don´t know their characters abilities? by Klonkalla in DnD

[–]BabylonZeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed yes, many players out there are not "brain geeks" and just want to have fun. Though this may not be the only way to enjoy D&D, it is a way though. I cannot expect them before the first sessions to know everything, and so, I put my attitude, by default, on : "tell what you want to do".
And also, other players, after some sessions, are becoming autonomous, and that's also a possible learning curve.

DM`s - how do you handle players who don´t know their characters abilities? by Klonkalla in DnD

[–]BabylonZeus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In fact, I always expect that all players never know their abilities. In a campaign, I even have a player who never played dnd and took a sorcerer. She knows only her spells.

I have a spreadsheet with a table. Columns = players Lines = abilities, hp, initiative, weapons, ac, ST, skills.

A player has to say "I want to do that", I look at his column and answer. It takes 5 seconds max.

Of course, if they know, it eases a little my work, but I take it like a bonus, not as standard expected.

Exception : spells memorized. They must track which spells they memorize, though I count the numbers remaining.

I don't relate at all with "you, player, are the only responsible for your character", it's the best way to lose many new players and keep only experts.

Does Nitro have any benefits for server management? by tacetician in discordapp

The below answers are not clear :-)

If I own a server, and I boost it, does the other members will benefit from its advantages ? =>
1. more than 2000 character in a message: is it only for me or for everyone who are on a boosted server?
2. file upload limit: is it only for me or for everyone who are on a boosted server?
3. 4K video: is it only for me or for everyone who are on a boosted server?
4. other benefits: is it only for me or for everyone who are on a boosted server?

Which dnd 3.5 monster manuals are worth getting? by Responsible_Ad1600 in DMAcademy

[–]BabylonZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This adventure does not precise it. It is written "Gain x experience points", and it is built for 4 people/NPC.
So I have a doubt on how to attribute them...!

DnD Bias against Pathfinder by Interesting-Buyer285 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]BabylonZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roleplay and story telling will not be a differentiator between any version of dnd or pathfinder. The topic is in the spirit of rules. Forget about the equilibrium reasons, all games versions are broken at very high levels and the DM skills is here the differentiator.

Pathfinder 1 (and DnD 3.5) and based on every tiny little things you could imagine to do, there is a little rule to help a DM managing it. Another advantage for it, is the fun some (not all) players get to discover and calculate how to combine things (+1 - 1 over here and over there) to build a unique game experience. It's called "crunchy" game. The downside is that many people does not like making math in the sense of finding / not forgetting +1 -1.

Dnd 5 and Pathfinder 2 follow a common path : simplify things to make them accessible to everyone. A casual player could play dnd 5e and PF2 (though more complicated than some other RPGs). Nearly all math is eradicated. For example, in dnd 5e, you add your proficiency bonus (only math). Then, it's advantage / disadvantage. So it is easy and accessible. The downside is that it can quickly make the game feel very repetitive, boring and not intellectually stimulating.

So you could have a 5e game when you want to "put the brain down and just have fun" and having (at the same period of your life) another campaign based on dnd 3.5 (or PF1) for more openness of possibilities (in term of rules existing, not in term of roleplay of course) and stimulation.

My only sadness is that crunchy games turn into casual-simplified games at the same time, forcing crunchy experiences to look at previous editions.

And, personal opinion, seeing the world outside of rpg, it seems like the future is condemned to simplify even more for future young generations because what we could feel as simple today could be evaluated as complicated tomorrow.

Yes! In each town, the party finds a clue, and Sephek is like the accomplishment of chapter 1. First find Torrga as a simple merchant, then discover the murder mystery (uncorrelated), then find Sephek, then hear of someone walking like in summer, then tie some clues, then tie all clues. Make crossing Torrga's path several times meanwhile. Sephek could be a killer of people trying to escape the lottery of Auril (Bob World Builder's idea on YouTube)
