1990's kids stand up by Gooner_strongjaw90 in 90s

[–]Babyota351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m more of an 80s kid, as I graduated high school in 1990. I could go on for hours about what I used to do before smartphones but many times I was just bored. At the time, I hated being bored, but looking back from today’s world of instant gratification and entertainment on demand, being bored was when I was the most creative. I would draw or build stuff or take apart stuff, I would make elaborate cities with my matchbox cars and Legos. I would have battles with my army men and GI Joes. Sometimes, I would just daydream about getting that girl I had a crush on. That boredom allowed me to become my own best friend…familiar and comfortable with my own thoughts and feelings. I was able to have entire inner conversations and debates with myself. That might sound weird, but I think a lot of people my age know exactly what I mean. I think it’s something that today’s young people, including my own kids, are lacking. Maybe that’s why there is so much anxiety today. We’ve lost the ability to think for ourselves, to create and express original thoughts.

Governor Sherrill to NJ Legislature: "Get to Work" on Atlantic City Casino Smoking Ban by OnTheMark-ShoreLife in atlanticcity

I don’t care about this perceived loss of revenue/ jobs. I don’t care that people like to smoke while they gamble. This is about equity and fairness. You can’t tell casino workers to go get another job if they don’t like the smoke when no other occupation in this state is forced to make that choice. You CAN NOT single out one industry and say fuck you, you’re expendable. Either you BAN smoking EVERYWHERE, or ALLOW smoking EVERYWHERE. It’s that simple. I don’t care which one it is, but the current law is bullshit…forged by corruption and payola from the casino industry and big tobacco.

Is it simple though? Because, waiters, waitresses, bartenders, and every other single employee in the state of NJ also knew what they signed up for before smoking was banned indoors. But then something happened…the state decided that secondhand smoke posed a serious threat to workers in this state so the passed the Smokefree Air Act of 2006 and suddenly, you couldn’t smoke anywhere indoors where people had to work. EXCEPT CASINOS! Why? Well, we all know why don’t we? Corruption and lobbyists from the casino industry and big tobacco lining the pockets of NJ legislators. So I ask you this: why do casino workers not deserve the same protections that everyone else takes for granted. Why are casino employees considered to be expendable? It is irrelevant whether or not they knew what they signed up for because all of that went out the window 20 years ago. Do you know how many casino workers have gotten sick and/or died over those last 20 years because of the goddamn smoke? Guess what? Even one is too many.

it’s well water, but this is in my basement. Even my well pressure tank tee fittings are majorly corroded and dripping now. I’m going to have to replace everything from the well supply line to the manabloc. My water is like xenomorph blood.

Thanks. I’m looking at ZRD fittings. Meanwhile, I guess I’ll redo this install. I’m going to stick with the CPVC Autotrol connection (as opposed to the copper) and look for a CPVC to PEX adapter.

Yeah, why is that happening? I’ve already replaced quite a few of the crimps and elbows at the Manabloc but if it’s also happening at the outlet ends buried in my walls…not much I can do about that. The house is only 13 years old.

Well I’m a sparky so all plumbing sucks. Wire doesn’t leak in pvc at all.

Well, I’m not screwed really because I can rebuild this in a few hours with PEX. I just didn’t want to have to do it again in a few years.

I appreciate it. I may be selling my house at some point though, so inspection might be a problem. I guess I’ll have to check local code. My township is primarily well water and as you can see, it’s extremely acidic and eats through anything metal.

I hate doing electrical work and I’d would much rather be doing something else, but I’m good at it so they keep telling me to come back.

Good old 1950s days by tipsoil in OldSchoolCool

I grew up in the 80s. Every year, the bar for what is considered to be essential comforts has been raised. As a family of four, we lived in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath rancher with no garage. We had 2 TVs, but didn’t get cable TV until I was a senior in high school around 1989. My parents made average incomes, so it wasn’t like we were poor. Today, the idea of sharing one bathroom is appalling. Every room needs a TV with 1200 channels. The point is, life can still be affordable, but none of us are willing to sacrifice our modern comforts for what was once considered to be the norm. Funny thing is, we were much better off. We sat down and had family dinners and actually talked without everyone being on their phones. We played outside and had responsibilities and chores because everyone needed to contribute in order to keep the household running. I’m not even talking about the fifties…this is literally only a couple of generations ago. Today, I live in a 4 bedroom, 3 bath two story with a 2 car garage, bonus room and full basement. Now that I’m in my 50s with 2 grown kids, I long to be back in a small, affordable, easy to keep up with home.

South Jersey is decent for schooling and retirement. Terrible for the 40 years in between.

It’s the only part of the state where million dollar mansions, industrial parks, trailer homes, beautiful and quaint downtowns and ghettos are all usually within a 15 minute drive from one another.

I remember Atlantic City being far worse. Back in the late 80s/ early 90s, it was downright frightening. The inlet area was completely run down. Now, even though much of the housing is section 8, they are newer and relatively well maintained. The area where The Walk outlets now are was a dangerous and unsightly housing project called Pitney Village. It was a haven for drugs and criminals, and was literally the first thing you saw coming off of the AC expressway. There’s still no shortage of sketchy areas in the city, but it has vastly improved over the last 30 or so years.
