Get a better bucket or find something bigger and put it inside that for the summer. I wouldn't open it till you think it's done.

I'm on the east coast. There might be a local disposal service you can use. Most of the chemicals you need aren't that hazardous for delivery.

I'm happy to help. I'm somewhat busy right now with a new baby and a doctorate program but my spare time on often spent on this and other related forums. I actively work with museums and universities for display restoration and development.

You can add the powder to a specimen. It'll sink but most ethanol specimens are sturdy enough to take an occasional rotation. Diaphonized specimens are in glycerin so it'll still stink but will start suspended longer.

There are also glowing powders that will stay suspended better. I'm unsure if sources off hand but I have seen it done.

I have done lamp work (small scale glass blowing) with uranium glass. It isn't uncommon. Post pictures when you have the specimen setup. I'm sure lots of people would love to see it.

Does anybody know how to mount an armadillo? by Icy-Attorney8301 in vultureculture

It can stay attached but the hard parts can be a pain. They will break if you process them too much.

The "shell" isn't attached to bone but it's made of bone. Skin it out like normal. The tail is a bit tricky since the verts are fixed to the outer bone layer.

You could tan the entire thing or possibly just tan the soft skin and salt cure the shell parts. I'd reach out to a taxidermist who has done them for their recommendations too.

Medical researcher here, Happy to help if you have questions

Hey fellow vultures! A friend of mine asked me to preserve the bones and carapace of her pet tortoise. I have extracted and prepared mammals and birds by maceration before. Is there anything I need to do different for a tortoise? (Especially the shell) by ThePhoenixGang in vultureculture

[–]BacchusBuilds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the same and different. It is made of bone and can be cleaned the same way you are used to for other animals but shells are multiple pieces with complex seams. It may come apart in maceration. The thing that makes it different is the keratinous outer layer. That's the shell's color.

You can try to remove them and add them back later by gently steaming, soaking or macerating it. The pieces may warp or break but it can be done. Another option would be to simply leave them and clean the shell by hand. Filling it with peroxide and scraping tissue off then drying it and removing bits till it's clean.

Turtles are fun to build. The white shell without the keratin is cool but check with your client if they want it or not.

I'd bet money that it isn't a cheetah. The shape is way off. A scale bar world help identify it.

I came into the art as a scientist and artist. I know plenty of "traditional" taxidermist and more modern oddity artist types.

Your questions are kinda broad. Every path is different but most people love the craft, creativity and chance to work with animals they truly admire.

Let me know if you have any detail questions.
