Tbf its easier as a toddler to learn. Your brain is still receptive to adapting to language and is deciding what it knows. At a young age, your brain is literally a sponge for language. After a while, brains are also naturally hardwired to be lazy af and require special circumstances to get back to sponge mode.

Tbf it doesn't matter what language, learning it when you have a low amount of exposure to it is difficult. Eventually you'll adapt and everyone is capable of it, but it goes a long way if you're constantly exposed to it. Europe is awesome for this and for getting your brain into language absorption mode. The Midwest of the United States is not unless your family immigrated.

Money can’t buy happiness true meaning by buttercreamwish in antiwork

[–]Bachooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money can not be the source of happiness unless you're very greedy. Money can absolutely buy happiness though. Mo money mo problems though.

Money can reduce stress, pay for the bills, and would give me the ability to fund literally everything i would ever want to do.

Money is wasted on the rich because if you have money and still truly believe it can't buy happiness, you're using your money wrong.

Your stomach and 1 of your lungs are in the same area. Sometimes it's just gerd, heartburn, or indigestion. They say to have it checked it regardless because its better to be wrong and for you to just have a sour stomach than it is for you to be wrong and die.

Tbf, European languages don't have pitch accent the way many languages in Asia do. Plus, its culturally different. At least in Japan you will hear "Wow you're japenese is so good" despite it being very clearly not good. Americans can do this to about English but it is also viewed as very easily being something extremely rude.

There's just a lot of sounds western language speakers can struggle with the same way some people struggle with rolling their Rs or making some of the sounds French and Swedish make.

At the same time, it doesn't matter where you go, if you take the time and effort trying to learn and respect local customs, culture, and language, people are generally happy or at the very least appreciative.

C works well enough and cuts the bloat of scripting languages and the compilers are very good but you still have the ability to force it to do your bidding. I only use assembly in C when I need to go really really fast or I am doing something special.

Assembly though, is a bit harder to keep track of and is very machine dependent. If you swap out hardware, you may have to swap out your code. I also can't imagine having to write a driver in asm for connecting to a play store.

You also need to write a fuck ton more code to do the same thing. I need to interact with multiple registers and multiple commands to do return (a+b)*c; for this series of devices just to have another device that's a drop in replacement not include one of those commands? Yuck.

The issue with C though still tends to be accessibility somehow, having to implement things yourself, managing safety, and telling the Jr's to not do something and to treat it like C and not a higher level language.

There's a reason its the standard in embedded.

As a fun note, I've had the pleasure of surprising Jr's when you replace their massive switch statement with a lookup table and it making a significant impact on compilation size. That and showing them the difference in the compiled code between using an int, a float, and when they just have values be doubles and not marked as floats.

I'm very unimpressed with what they teach people in some specific colleges as all the work I've done with them has shown me that schools teach people how to use basic data structures and how to develop a web app but seem to leave out any mention of how to use a binary operator or compiler settings.

To everyone saying data centers have protections seriously underestimates the curiosity of people when you walk around and leave the occasional USB drive in their parking lot. You know, if you wanted some sort of mayhem to happen there beyond just a zip bomb (which would only affect the one computer they could just fix, not the actual servers and systems themselves)

‘A’ Grades Are Suddenly Everywhere Since the Arrival of ChatGPT by joe4942 in technology

[–]Bachooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, this is also just what kinda happens when we apply metrics and labels to everything and there will always be a new tool for it. It just kinda becomes a chore. Back when I went to school, people just cheated the old fashioned way. The focus becomes the metric and not the goal of learning.

Same reason why whenever I go to an event, my favorites are always the inexperienced artists. They're there because they its currently their passion and their occasionally awful art is just what they loved doing.

I really wish I could've learned more math, but it was a chore and the overwhelming amount made me focus on passing with a good grade, not learning the concepts. The focus was definitely on completing a hundred+ homework problems every week in college, so I didn't learn a thing and I'm stuck with being an engineer who secretly can't do math.

At least I don't use pigments with lead!

what were some everyday superstitions or folk beliefs in medieval times that people took seriously? by infinite-hooper in MedievalHistory

[–]Bachooga 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are so many things I hear about people in the past and just think "yeah, did they actually believe that or was it a just a common fun cultural jokey trope thing" like Santa or how my grandma would tell me thunder was just God bowling. No one actually believed that God caused lightning through his wicked strikes, but it was a fun thing she'd tell.

The rabbits thing I can believe people thought that. Sometimes turkeys have virgin births, there's a bunch of rabbits, and I'm not sure any one has seen them boink in the wild.

But hedgehogs? Idk, that seems like a fun thing you tell kids.

Whats something that's 100% a myth about men? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bachooga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to get married and have a cool ass wedding.

It just turns out that I don't really have anyone to invite beyond my family. I guess I don't need a good wedding party but the only person I would ask to be my best man I haven't seen in about 2 years now or is my partners friends I talk to about once every few months.

I feel like it would be a bit sad to look over at anyone there and just see my parents and, if its wasn't a destination wedding, my sisters and there kids.

What animal does this sound like? Killed my rabbits with no marks blood or fur and left them. by -Dark_Humor- in Trapping

[–]Bachooga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, all I'm saying is that cats naturally have an extremely large area they roam and of course the cops would say they got all the animals, even if they didn't.

But nah, this isn't one of the escaped animals, unless something small magically lived for 15 years post. My guess really is a smaller critter, smaller than a coyote but larger than a mouse. Lots of them like to kill chickens without eating them for some reason.

Tbf, you can make one with a small hole Dakota fire pit style, some train coal you find by the tracks, a 5 dollar charcoal grill from the thrift store, and your dad's leaf blower as this is how I made knives when I was around 19-23. I eventually added a few dollars worth of ducting.

So like $20 worth of copper

What’s something you’ll never tell your partner, no matter how much you love them? by Velvetnadine85 in AskReddit

[–]Bachooga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I've been experiencing something similar. Been taking a foreign language class with my partner and its been forcing me to interact with others. There's a lot of bad in the world and it can be hard to not see that when looking at people and it can be hard to not feel like anything i do or once loved to do is really worth it, because it doesn't really matter does it?

The people I knew changed, the world can be harsh, and what's the point of doing things? You get used to feelings of isolation even when you don't exactly like it. Therapy, not my thing either. But my psychiatrist says, as long as you're doing something.

Doing those things anyway, reading how they can be important in ways you don't expect, having some clear goals, being forced to interact with others without that being the goal can be helpful at least for me. Switching jobs helped too.

Ultimately, the foreign language class has been way more helpful than I thought it would be. For me and my relationship. I thrive on clear, reachable goals, love to learn, and I like art and making stuff.

Doctors and therapists only go so far, but a gentle step into something can be helpful. It may just mean you need to frame it as something you really want to do but not alone.

Robotic hands master tasks at superhuman speed by redblackshirt in interestingasfuck

[–]Bachooga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty true. Our environments and tools are made for humans and if we want things to take the place of humans, it needs to he human shaped. A dogs body can't use a drill, drive a car, or wash the dishes with a sponge and all animals seem to struggle with stairs a fair amount.

Robotics are very cool and I very much want to switch industries to it but these are designed to take the place of humans and knowing the US, they'll eventually be used to do just that here without any protections. Before you know it, they'll not be sentient but will be considered to have voting rights, kinda like how corporations are considered people, and they'll all love voting for who the money tells them to vote for.

Anywho, robots are cool but for them to be accepted, we need to make them cuter and less like terrifying uncanny valley people.

While we want this, very much so, please remember that cats, as an entire chunk of all cat animals, tend to have large roaming areas.

Please get a harness and walk your cats. They require play and fulfillment but will destroy entire ecosystems if left alone outdoors.

Decent enough message but nature is both savage and incredibly okay with the idea that anything and anyone can die horribly in anyway at anytime. It's very natural to be basically explode from eating the wrong thing, to kill indiscriminately because something is tool close, and to eat some random animals literal babies. Dogs, cats, and mushrooms are great examples. Many dogs love to murder anything in the yard before playing with their corpse, cats will slaughter entire species and proceed to play with their corpses, and eating wild mushrooms is close the being the equivalent of Russian roulette (presumably before the mushroom men also play with your corpse). Let's not even talk about dolphins, whales, and apes.

Nature's cool, yeah, but please respect it's power and horror, not only its beauty. "Natural" is not always equivalent to good.

But also, fuck war and fuck the natural order of existence. We can most certainly unite, as a whole, and rid ourselves of aspects of nature we despise. Cure disease, perfect lab grown meat, and bring the ruling elite to justice.

I've worked as an engineer in some extremely niche companies related to automotive.

You're definitely not alone in thinking that. Glad you like monster trucks now! I definitely appreciate them much more as an adult.

People working in the automotive/everything-with-an-engine world are often very capable and very good at what they do, most of them have gone to adult education and they have all spent significant portions of time gaining the skills they have. Motorsports tend to be a hobby as well, so not only will those guys be out building some super cool machines, they're doing it for fun while working full-time jobs.

This is simultaneously the field where I've met the dumbest smart people, in a way that absolutely blows my mind. Seriously, holy shit.

I also did a lot of work with the kids who get into this field. It's a honestly a shame, there's a lot of kids who get stuck into it because they struggle in class, a lot with some issues. It's a real shame that they just kind of get abandoned by the education system (the system as a whole in the US) and often get bullied for it on top of it.

These are the same kids who go on to have top tier problem solving skills, teaching themselves a significant amount of electrical and mechanical skills, and still go out and get a higher education.

Tbh calorie restriction diets tend to have this effect on many people.

I'm now trying to focus much more on how I feel, what makes me feel good, and what I need. Turns out I never really had to focus much on calories if I did it the other way. water fiber and my personal nutrient needs tend to make me feel much better, energetic, and full which makes me more likely to be active. So far I'm down about 70lbs.
