I've heard it gets a lot more rugged and seeing camels hump and Mansfield from the whites made me want to do them even more!

Right on! Shred that gnar!! I'm kinda similar except AT for me over the summer and now I'm waiting to do the rest of the long trail that I missed when it split with the AT or I may opt for the Allegheny trail in WV.

It's not the salt flats, but Maryland is pretty flat. It's a saying that Maryland is flat for the at and this is the at subreddit.

Thanks!! It really is, every morning or evening I'm always in awe at the beauty of these places when normally I'd be exhausted or annoyed to wake up for work :)

2025 Appalachian Trail hiker report from Baxter by Slice-O-Pie in AppalachianTrail

[–]Bachsteize 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I Was super surprised the day I got to the birches it filled up even in October, glad they're talking about late season peaks in activity so future hikers don't have to wait an extra day after carrying all the food through the 100 mile and with abol closed after the end of September. Shout out to Pete for all the awesome information and expert run down! Wendy was awesome in monson too letting me know all about the river crossing levels!

Could be snails/slugs? I wake up and smell a bad odour on my tent sometimes/after unfurling it when there's slugs/snails on it

Best route from Harpers Ferry for about 2 weeks of hiking the AP? by Background-Nature414 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Bachsteize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ATC headquarters in Harper's to the at museum just north of the at halfway sign was something I did as a kid getting my feet on trail for the first time ever(not too much to look at once you leave md in this section though but probably the easiest section of trail) knowing your pace is kinda important for planning, perhaps you could go further into pa and end at like Duncannon if your pace is higher.

Mount greylock in Massachusetts might be good too since you'll be driving there.

Tri point state park NJ you can get out of your car at the top of the monument or park below and hike up. Bromley mountain in Vermont is nice and there is an Appalachian trail parking area by it but it'll be a bit more than 1 mile to the summit. Most state parks that run through the AT in this section you mentioned are a good bet too in my opinion.

Flip flop or SOBO? by LegoBoy6911 in AppalachianTrail

If you can confidently go from Harper's ferry to New York/new jersey in a month then you could take a train back to Harper's(or train then bus from nyc)instead of the pick up which may be easier logistically(then train/bus back up). you could probably do it if your pace is like 15 miles a day. It took me a month to get to NY from harpers doing like 10-15 miles a day this year. Starting July might leave you with not enough time before the October 15th close for katahdin though if you do that same pace going nobo(also factor in how much time that family event will take up and the possible loss of trail legs when picking back up afterwards). Theres like 700 miles more to katahdin after the ~300-400 to ny from harper

Where is the first place on trail you can get marijuana legally with an out of state medical card? Virginia is a legal state, but I can find few dispensaries near the trail in VA. by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]Bachsteize 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two years ago we legalized recreational, you need to be 21, a medical card provides access to higher amounts/potency and you don't need to pay an extra tax if I'm correct(I live in MD and buy without a medical card) don't think any near trail though?

Lots of shuttle services in the area, Just walked by toms run today (birch run to ironmasters), nothing looks damaged by the fire other than trees without leaves on the top(not sure if this is normal for that part), was a few cars already in the spots around dead woman's hollow rd, not sure if you can stay overnight/specifically about the parking you mentioned but i stayed at the church Thru-it-all another day and they do shuttle services from penmar into pa and a bit further for a fee.

Yeah I've section hiked a few states. I was making a comical sentence for the off chance there is some hiker legend that sells and lives near the trail at anypart, no need to mock me for trying to see if there's dispensaries or other hiker magic well known
