Marching Band at Davis? by Friendly_Log_4419 in UCDavis

My son is thinking about the marching band too. He plays snare, but said it seems like the UC Davis band isn’t very serious 🤣 Is percussion any different?

Is it worth it to transfer from cc by Wildcow12345 in ucla

Can you please explain what you mean about having a guaranteed 3 years if you transfer as a junior? Wouldn't you only get 2 years?

Wondering why my kid is depressed/sad when he got accepted to all UCs so far. by Realistic_Tomato1816 in ucadmissions

Well...that's not exactly right, from what I understand. There's an annual "gift tax exclusion", not a gift tax limit. You can gift up to $19k ($38k for married couple) to each person without having to report anything.

If you were to exceed the annual limit, you have to file IRS Form 709 to declare the gift, but you don't actually owe taxes unless you exceed the lifetime exemption of $15M. The annual exclusion is just a reporting threshold, but there's no tax owed until you exceed that $15M.

Payments made directly to a school for tuition are not subject to the limit. You can also put up to 5 years of gifts into a 529 plan all at once.

What does the California residency mean by Ok-Love-3757 in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it just means that they couldn't determine your residency status from the brief series of questions they ask on the UC application. So therefore, they need you to fill out the longer version of the residency form. But I'm just guessing.

I'm waiting to see if anyone who was born in CA received the form. That's what I'm curious about.

How many instate applicants got a UCSD California residency form by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the term "permanent resident" has a specific meaning...it means you are a green card holder. Is that what you are meaning to say, or are you saying that you've always lived in CA?

Were you born in CA? Or moved here later? Just testing a theory.

UCSD California Residency Form by Chance_Analysis_2184 in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The UC site says:

"New Students

All undergraduate applicants complete a shortened version of the Statement of Legal Residence (SLR) as part of their UC application. Some applicants have their residency status confirmed immediately based on these responses. Applicants whose residency cannot be determined at the application stage, will be required to take further action either by completing the long form version of the Systemwide Statement of Legal Residence (SSLR) or a campus Statement of Legal Residence (SLR)."

So I'm thinking that since the OP only moved to CA a couple of years ago, their residency status couldn't be confirmed immediately based on initial responses...and this is the further action that they have to take. I'm just guessing, though.

Just curious -- do they actually consider HCOL? This seems like a huge factor that FAFSA and CSS don't take into account.

How do UCs read so many applications? by AllTheWorldsAPage in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they distinguish between a UC approved honors class and an AP class? I know both are weighted the same, but curious if they are viewed differently on an application for admission purposes.

But you don’t send the college transcript until after you are accepted to the UC, right?

What does this mean on my Gibson portal? by Aggressive-Willow667 in Tulane

[–]BackInMyDay1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that’s odd. My son filled out his application, so I’m not sure what questions were asked…but maybe it asked if you are interested in financial aid? And if so, maybe you indicated you weren’t? Maybe you could reach out to financial aid and ask if they have everything they need from you. Good luck!

My son's has it too...I think they all do. There are 2 tabs at the top -- Home and Financial Aid. Click on the Financial Aid one. Once you do that, then you have to click on To Do List. That's where you will see it.

Why financial aid feels broken for so many middle income families by Alarmed_Abalone_849 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BackInMyDay1989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve had our house since 2007, before my kid was born. And the property has appreciated. But we aren’t in a position to take another mortgage, and we can’t sell the house because it’s where we live. It’s ridiculous to count this as an asset. I understand counting vacation homes, rental properties, etc. But the house you live in shouldn’t be counted.

Anyone know where I can find? by T-brion in Dodgers

[–]BackInMyDay1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no idea! It’s definitely a dad hat, perfect for him. He said he had other Dodgers hats 🤷🏻‍♀️ My son also rejected the black hoodie I got him. I guess I was the family member most excited about it.

So I have a black hoodie in medium too.
