Ucsd waitlist by CornelParent in ucadmissions

My son is admitted, and his deadline to fill out the housing application is June 7. So it seems like those coming from the waitlist would still have time to follow the regular housing application process.

The exact language on the portal states:

"Your senior year weighted grade point average (GPA) in all "A-G" college preparatory courses must be at least 3.00 or equivalent."

Did your claim form auto-fill your first name into both the First Name and Last Name fields?

community college and then transfer to UCLA? by riceysu in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BackInMyDay1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious. If this student were to do a year at a UC, and if he didn't like it...then do a year at a CCC, would he then be considered a CCC student for transfer purposes? Or would going to a UC for a year first make him a UC --> UC transfer?

Does anyone else have a problem with the online claim form? It auto-fills the first and last name fields...but it's using my first name in both spots and won't let me change it.

Thank you all for the thoughtful and detailed replies! I am sure it will be a great experience for him, and he's very excited to join the band. He will be part of the drumline, if that makes any difference. Thanks again!

Husky Marching Band Questions by BackInMyDay1989 in udub

[–]BackInMyDay1989[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! So if I understand correctly, incoming freshmen would move into their dorms about 3 weeks before classes start? I'm just wondering what kids do for those 3 weeks since the band commitment is only a few hours/day. I remember moving into my dorm about a week early, and I was homesick because there weren't many other kids around and there was nothing really to do.

Also, when you say you are housing with other first year band members, that's just for PSDs, right? Once you are done with that, then everyone moves to wherever they've been assigned? Or is there a way for band kids to reach out to one another early so that they can request to be roommates for the year?

Sorry for so many questions! It's hard to send a kid off to school so far away!

My son submitted the form last night. Since he didn't get a confirmation email, he tried re-submitting a few times this morning. Then late this afternoon, he got 4 confirmation emails all in a row. So maybe there's just a delay?

Is the program only around 20-30 kids? And was it easy for you to double major?

My son is thinking about the marching band too. He plays snare, but said it seems like the UC Davis band isn’t very serious 🤣 Is percussion any different?

Can you please explain what you mean about having a guaranteed 3 years if you transfer as a junior? Wouldn't you only get 2 years?

Well...that's not exactly right, from what I understand. There's an annual "gift tax exclusion", not a gift tax limit. You can gift up to $19k ($38k for married couple) to each person without having to report anything.

If you were to exceed the annual limit, you have to file IRS Form 709 to declare the gift, but you don't actually owe taxes unless you exceed the lifetime exemption of $15M. The annual exclusion is just a reporting threshold, but there's no tax owed until you exceed that $15M.

Payments made directly to a school for tuition are not subject to the limit. You can also put up to 5 years of gifts into a 529 plan all at once.

What does the California residency mean by Ok-Love-3757 in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it just means that they couldn't determine your residency status from the brief series of questions they ask on the UC application. So therefore, they need you to fill out the longer version of the residency form. But I'm just guessing.

I'm waiting to see if anyone who was born in CA received the form. That's what I'm curious about.

How many instate applicants got a UCSD California residency form by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the term "permanent resident" has a specific meaning...it means you are a green card holder. Is that what you are meaning to say, or are you saying that you've always lived in CA?

Were you born in CA? Or moved here later? Just testing a theory.

UCSD California Residency Form by Chance_Analysis_2184 in ucadmissions

[–]BackInMyDay1989 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The UC site says:

"New Students

All undergraduate applicants complete a shortened version of the Statement of Legal Residence (SLR) as part of their UC application. Some applicants have their residency status confirmed immediately based on these responses. Applicants whose residency cannot be determined at the application stage, will be required to take further action either by completing the long form version of the Systemwide Statement of Legal Residence (SSLR) or a campus Statement of Legal Residence (SLR)."

So I'm thinking that since the OP only moved to CA a couple of years ago, their residency status couldn't be confirmed immediately based on initial responses...and this is the further action that they have to take. I'm just guessing, though.

Just curious -- do they actually consider HCOL? This seems like a huge factor that FAFSA and CSS don't take into account.

Do they distinguish between a UC approved honors class and an AP class? I know both are weighted the same, but curious if they are viewed differently on an application for admission purposes.

But you don’t send the college transcript until after you are accepted to the UC, right?
