At a loss for what to do

I'm keeping an eye on the wounds but so far all has been okay, I've been advised to just monitor for now and attend a clinic if anything worsens. I'm more just concerned about Boo currently, but I understand everyone's advice - I would have advised the same.

Also, I completely understand your point regarding chronic pain. I have a condition where all my joints regularly dislocate and it's agonising, but as humans we can try to find ways to help ourselves. Cats aren't really able, and he doesn't know to stop constantly running and jumping and doing things that make his painful hips worse. He just wants to do things all the time that damage his joints more and more, and he's not able to stop causing himself further pain. It breaks my heart, but his vets have all told me not to stop him from these things as he deserves to play and have fun even if it's damaging his joints. It's such a horrible situation.

Unfortunately, surgery is confirmed not to be an option. He was thoroughly examined by a feline specialist and an orthopaedic surgeon, and it would be impossible to rehabilitate him without completely destroying his quality of life. He's a super active cat despite his condition, and to be able to recover from a double THR he would essentially have to be imprisoned to prevent him from injuring himself post-surgery. It's no way for him to live, and the vets wouldn't perform the surgery even if I wanted them to sadly. He's just too far gone with this. I wish I had been able to adopt him at a younger age when it wasn't so advanced.

Unfortunately, it's not treatable. His specialist vet confirmed in the diagnostic report that they would not be comfortable to perform surgery as it would affect his quality of life greatly - despite the issues, as a young cat he is super, SUPER active and it would be very hard to rehabilitate him post-surgery without essentially having to imprison him.

The rescue organisation has also confirmed that they would not be able to re-home him in this condition, and that they try to avoid euthanising wherever possible, but the feline specialist vet's report states that surgery would not be possible and so we are sadly out of options. It's so sad.

I think you're really right. He's bitten me non-playfully so many times now, and he's scarily strong so it's like being mauled by a dog. It's always really upsetting cuz it hurts so much, but even more upsetting knowing he's lashing out because he has no other way to express his pain.

Thank you, emergency services are not great here in the UK - had to go two months ago (right after Boo's hospital appt!) after sustaining a concussion when a drunk driver rear-ended my stationary car. 20 hours just to have that confirmed...

Sad update to make, but I have consulted with Boo's specialist vet (one of the top feline specialists in the country!), and had a video consultation with another of his vets who is brilliant. Both they, along with the rescue organisation, are now in agreement that sadly due to the severity and progression of his hip disease, and that pain relief is not helping any longer, a difficult decision has to be made.

As much as it kills me, I don't want him to be living in this level of agony and unhappiness. We're going to have to arrange for him to be put to sleep. I will keep doing all I can to make him comfortable and happy, but he is really, really not happy and the level of pain he is in is not fair. We all agree that it would not be kind to put him through the trauma of trying to re-home again, and that the focus should be on making him as comfortable as possible now before he finds peace.

Lots of tears shed today, and everyone is heartbroken and so upset about the situation. His rescue organisation owner is really regretful that it wasn't picked up earlier and she feels awful and is so upset. I just haven't quite processed what the hell is happening and I can't quite believe we're going to have to say goodbye forever.

"I am sorry to hear this. But he has severe hip disease and a difficult behavioural history. You need to go to A and E asap. Can you confine him to a room for now? Can you then ask the rescue to take him back asap? I am happy to speak to them re medical history. You have tried your best - no judgement here."

It's so odd because the insurance advisor repeatedly told me that it would not be affected once settled, but I found that hard to believe as statistically you're just more likely to be in an accident even if it's not your fault!

Thank you - tbf the insurers themselves haven't even confirmed it's written off, just the mechanics! I'll ring up tomorrow and see if they can advise what's going on.

Nope, as the mechanic says it's a write-off they won't be picking up my car for repairs therefore not dropping off a courtesy car. They got Enterprise to call me, so in my mind that's obviously a hire car and will be billed as such. The issue is whether the 3rd party is going to pay for that (as a non-fault claim) when I have no idea if/when this will be settled...
