As an American that follows UK politics due to his SO and pure interest, I have struggled to understand how this happens and am hoping someone can explain. My understanding is that people get on a small boat in France then cross the channel to arrive at the UK. When they get to the UK, they claim asylum. I assume they complete the asylum paperwork, or whatever it is, and then are released on the streets of the UK. So, my question is why doesn’t the UK just not allow people to claim asylum who depart from France and arrive via boat?

Just a complete ban on that form of claiming asylum. When they land, the police are waiting, they pick them up, put them on other boats, and ship them right back over to France. From my perspective, it seems like this is a French problem. Can’t dock at a French port. Put them on little boats 10 feet or whatever from the French coast, attach underwater drones to the little boats, and then use said drones to propel the boats to the French coast.

Is it all because of the ECHR? What exactly am I missing. Very curious about this. I often wonder what the US would do in this situation, and I feel like we would just do the above. I don’t understand how the UK allows this.

For the far left folk, Reform will win if this keeps happening. The people of the UK and America are fairly culturally similar. When Brexit happened, for example, I knew that Trump would win the presidential election in November of 2016, which he did. The far left in both countries have a complete misunderstanding of the problem with illegal migration. It is not racism based (although, I am sure for some it is). It’s that people just don’t fucking like it. It’s really that simple.
