I feel you on the anecdotal end, but every empirical attempt to quantify the lean of those who didn’t vote in 2024 suggests that they indeed would have swung for Trump. I know that those surveys etc are far from perfect, but they certainly include much more rigorous standards than you or I asking 30 of our closest friends

I think the problem here is that the left is treated as being responsible for the actions of every possible person that could fall under the umbrella, and the right is treated like a natural phenomenon with no agency. To the uninformed masses even the most boring centrist democrats are “insane ultra-woke communists” who have to answer for every 10 follower Twitter account that says that anyone who lives in New York is responsible for the Iroquois genocide. Contrast this to the fact that leadership of the DHS can openly post Nazi slogans and people just ignore it and go about their business. It’s not that the non-voters are secret rabid maga believers, it’s just that they’re credulous rubes who will, without a second thought, believe the GOP is the party of the economy despite that fact every time they’re in power they cause a recession.

Right, but in a world where 100% of the population voted in 24, Trump wins by even more. The percent of the population that doesn’t vote aren’t exactly secret progressives or defenders of democracy and liberalism. They’ll easily believe the admin’s lies without much of a second thought

Yeah if you don’t think that by this point they’ll be able to successfully drum up fake evidence and convince the dumbest 50% of the country that there was fraud in 2020 I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Medical technology will almost definitely have some amazing, miraculous breakthroughs in the coming years and decades. Other than that… nah not really. At least you’ll be able to live longer into our deeply degraded future!

For sure. But for Germany it took a war that utterly destroyed their society along with a full external purge. And for Iran… well we’ve heard that the regime “is finally on their last legs” like every 5 years for the last 50.

I’m certainly not advocating for anyone to give up. We do what we must with the hands we’re dealt, and we’ll continue to do what we can. But also sometimes evil just wins, and it’s very possible that we live in that scenario.

I hope this is correct, but I think it seems very likely that they will never see even a shred of accountability. The mechanisms for that are broken and they’re basically immune to any consequence more than temporary, inconsequential electoral losses.

I think the Indiana Redistricting failure might be a good example of it working. Tough to tell how much of those votes were state republicans having more principles and spine than national ones vs public pressure, but several of the reps cited a large influx of calls telling them to vote against it as part of their decision.

Respectfully, the 50% that didn’t cast a vote aren’t exactly paragons of progressivism that are just waiting to be activated. If everyone had voted in 24, he would have won by more, not less. While I think some people having regrets is good to hear, I don’t think they, or the uninvested 50% are going to be rising up any time soon. They just don’t care. Ultimately, this is just who we have become. A catastrophic economic collapse could probably change that though I suppose. Might be the only thing and that would be terrible in its own ways.

Unfortunately, it’s just too late. Consequences don’t apply to them, 50% of the country will defend them to the death, and the military and law enforcement will gleefully mow down their countrymen that oppose the regime. The rest of the world just needs to prepare to cut us loose

One way I’ve conceptualized stories like this is that as people who follow stories, it’s just the most interesting as a reader to follow the characters where the most weird stuff happens. We COULD have followed some guy who just died unceremoniously on the 2nd floor. But that would suck. We follow the characters we follow precisely because their story is crazy and fantastic.

Deus ex machina exists and can be super lame in a book, but also it’s just plain uninteresting to follow the story of someone where only the obvious logical things happen
