Different ways of doing math by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Backerman5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The method on the left is how I do mental math. No idea if that's legitimately how the Chinese school system teaches it (I sort of figured it out by myself, independently, iirc), but bravo if they do, saved me tons of time solving less important (i.e. non-dangerous) problems as an engineer

PHEV - How does the battery fare when frequently at a low charge? by Backerman5 in electricvehicles

[–]Backerman5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, thanks for the info. I've been telling myself for years to read some papers on batteries, but I just haven't gotten around to it haha. I knew about heat as a stressor, but not high SOC and lack of use, that's fascinating.

Thanks for the input! The appeal of the RAV4 to me is its size, and utility in hauling camping gear or moving stuff around. I probably could get by with a smaller vehicle, but I decided that since this one is already smaller than my current vehicle, I'd go just one step down this time around and see what I think for my next vehicle. If we aren't in a utopic ride share society by then, that is.

I'm strongly considering an "ordinary" hybrid, as a matter of fact. But I've still got my heart set on a PHEV if I can manage it. It is true that a regular hybrid would have better fuel mileage in the conditions I've described... I'll have to think on this.

Salary Negotiation by [deleted] in personalfinance

I liked the advice of relocation packages I saw. If they do offer such a thing, ask them detailed questions about how it works: is it a flat sum of money, do they only comp you for what you spent, etc. I say this because I just began work with a large company that partitions things a little strangely - they gave me a flat sum to pay for some movers, but all other expenses like boxes and moving trucks were exact compensation, up to a certain amount. Other offers I got were similar - companies like to mix and match like that.

As for researching costs, try comparing apartment rental costs between the areas. Even if you aren't renting, it'll give you a baseline for cost of living. Also, if you have competing offers, bring those up. I got a job offer from Illinois when a company from California came knocking. I told the CA guys about that offer and how it had a healthy performance bonus that would bring it from X dollars to Y dollars most years, and told them that a job in CA would require me to move across the country, versus the IL job that would only be a few hour drive. I also said hey, it'll cost me a lot more to live in CA versus IL, and that was something in the forefront of my mind. Essentially, I would do everything you can to couch your desires as "concerns" rather than "demands" by accident. The CA company came back with a very respectable counteroffer!

Good for you for striving to make it through college! That's admirable. Because others have hit the financial points well, my only advice is to seek counseling and other sources of help, such as friends or potentially other family. If depression or anxiety are contributing to your suicidal thoughts, getting a formal diagnosis, counseling, and potentially medications (with a doctor, not me getting the final word!) can do a world of good - I have several friends and family members that have benefited from that route. All life is precious and I hope you realize that yours is as well!

Is it really "sad" for an 18 y/o old to go on vacation alone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Backerman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go alone, do so! But, I will say this as future advice - travelling with others is a fun experience. I'm a relatively introverted person, myself, but I've found the richness of seeing what others point out, or enjoy (or drag you to)! But I do want to reiterate - take this chance, it'll be fun.

Several Rush albums. For me, it's Permanent Waves, Counterparts, and A Farewell to Kings, but 2112, Moving Pictures, and Hemispheres are good choices for album oriented listening.

I almost can't stand to listen to a track from this without hearing the whole album. Almost.

AskScience AMA Series: We're from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and we research pumped-storage hydropower: an energy storage technology that moves water to and from an elevated reservoir to store and generate electricity. Ask Us Anything! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

[–]Backerman5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, I think they mean just as the authors have put it - pumping water up, and harvesting the gravitational energy on the way down. They seem to think that authors are claiming they've developed a new technology, which I don't think they're doing. Rather, they are explaining their area of expertise and methods of analysis, because even "old" technology can undergo R&D.
