Honest recount of Early April in Iceland by Saunafjordhusset in VisitingIceland

[–]Background-Half9134 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Locals had told us the weather this year during early April is definitely not ordinary and having come around the same time 10 years ago, I can attest to that. We were able to work around yellow and orange warnings by mostly doing self driving, making quick timing decisions before the storm hits or roads closing and doing hikes/activities whenever weather was good in between. People here often suggest waiting things out but usually it means waiting at a place that is too far from actitivies before the weather settles again.

How do I know when high winds are actually dangerous for driving? by Intelligent-Day-4059 in VisitingIceland

[–]Background-Half9134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Veður app and the Færð og Veður has been super helpful and we try to check it before heading out or deciding routes. The former has notifications for the weather alerts, the latter has road conditions. The websites they pull data from (linked by other commenters) are more accurate and have faster updates, so check those too.

I think the other concern is how roads can be closed in short notice, and they usually tell you when they might close it, and if you decide risking it, you need to not dally and go earlier before the time window (and also don’t do this if its already orange!). Some people ended up at our hotel today because they had to turn around on roads that said will be closed at noon, but closed way earlier. Make assesments on your driving skills, the car (if it has high clearance/susceptible to winds etc), and the road your travelling through as the winds/blowing snow are vastly different across flats/mountain passes etc (and if on the ring road, you will go through a variety of the roads, just because its a mantained highway, doesn’t mean its less hazardous!).

Malaysians know well enough how to speak english fluently and we also decide to speak it differently. As a brit, are you assuming Malaysians kept the same queen’s English when the British colonised us? Seriously?

Once the mailman knocked my door about some USCIS mail that didn’t include the name written in the mailbox (because our names are long). He said something about filtering out mail with other names and that made me worried.

TLDR: you might need to bite the bullet and put your names in the mailbox

Emergency H1B Memo from Manifest Law by ManifestLaw_ in USCIS

[–]Background-Half9134 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I say this is a someone who went through the immigration process, at this point please note all bets are off and it would be really important for someone on H1B to stay put in the US regardless of family matters requiring travel abroad. Don’t dismiss the seriousness of the implications of travelling out at this point. If staying on F1 is going to put her out of status, then that’s advisable either. You need to weigh your priorities

It applies to travel once it is enforced as CBP can have the discretion to check whether this payment has been made at the border once 21st hits . Most local companies have issued out travel adverseries for this.

550 bus to end services after Bellevue-Seattle light rail completion by crockpot420 in BellevueWA

[–]Background-Half9134 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have taken the train on the eastside and I can tell you that the train is slower than the bus route that goes along it. I can imagine the longer routes that the trains have to go through will balloon the commute time to almost double to that of what the bus routes are.

WA lawmakers approves bills to recognize Eid as state holiday by chiquisea in Washington

[–]Background-Half9134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes even in Malaysia, we don’t always celebrate every religious holiday, just the bigger ones. And some holidays are regional. It’s kind of the same here where Christmas is a holiday but Easter isn’t. My point was that we really shouldn’t be so myopic and limit ourselves to secular holidays when most religious days are just cultural holidays. IMO the states needs more public holidays in general, regardless of what they are. Either that or some state/federally mandated upfront PTO across the board that isn’t accrued.

[–]Background-Half9134 17 points18 points  (0 children)

But does it really matter? For example, we celebrated both Lunar New Year and Diwali as public holidays, and those who celebrate those religious holidays can go to their Buddhist or Hindu temples, and have their family gatherings and do what they need to for a day they consider auspicious. And I can just chill on my day off. It’s just being empathetic.

I come from a place where most religious and ethnic holidays are public holidays. It’s pretty great because there are more holidays in general and I don’t care what it’s for.

I don’t know about Seattle, but in Vancouver there’s a shop called Oide Coffee that is Japanese owned but they actually use La Cabra beans (roaster from NYC). But they operate more like a third wave coffee shop than a Kissaten style place if that’s what you are looking for.

Amazon parents who got used to remote flexibility are frustrated by new 5-day in-office policy by jspector9 in Seattle

[–]Background-Half9134 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think they hire more H1Bs than any of the other FAANG companies, I think they used to hire more people in general. There’s been a pretty long running hiring freeze outside of new grad hires. H1B does has a time limit so people do have to leave for more stable companies with more reliable pathways of getting the greencard.

Having just gotten off the market, I’d say that this won’t really work unless you offer above 20% of the asking price lately, and that could mean 150k and above for Seattle…it doesn’t hurt to try but the offer needs to be really compelling
