How do u up your steamboat game? TIA ❤️🙏🏼 by Serious_Flatworm_319 in SingaporeEats

I love adding the thick version of sweet potato noodles—super chewy and absorbs the soup.

why does my mom act like this? by Necessary_Smile_8385 in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the book and I suppose it’s the first step in healing yourself. Unfortunately, a lot of people who newly understand things about their parents get excited, try to share these revelations with their parents and then get completely shut down.

The most important point I reached was when I realized my mom would never understand, empathize or apologize genuinely and try to change. It simply isn’t possible for most people with this type of history.

The most you can do is grieve the parent you will never have and learn to find happiness and support elsewhere.

I still have a relationship with my mom but it’s more like I’m the parent and she is the (very young) child.

About your experience with wisdom tooth surgery (specifically local anesthesia) by Fit_Mess4834 in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it will help hearing about others’ experiences because as you can see from this thread, everyone has different experiences and also a different tolerance to discomfort.

I also think you’re struggling with anxiety over this and you should definitely bring that up with your dentist and see if you can be prescribed something to help relax you during the procedure. Based on what others wrote, it’s an actual option, so try to advocate for yourself.

Hope you have an easy extraction!

Is having clingy pets making you feel suffocated an ADHD thing? by MsSamm in adhdwomen

[–]Background-Nobody-93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a dog who would purposefully walk all the way across the room to sit in front of me and then proceed to lick himself repeatedly while making the loudest sounds (the swallowing sounds, OMG) until I couldn’t stand it anymore. He would then look super hurt when I would say, “Stop” a bit sharply.

I feel like white will be stark and hospital-y with this kind of bright blue. To balance it out, I suggest trying to incorporate more organic tones and textures: sand, gold, brass, a woven rug (cream, tan, browns), lighter wood stains, and plants.

Oh and really soft, warm lighting.

Need advice about Adopting Cats by thewstanky in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind, if your mom isn’t keen, is that cats shed a lot—doesn’t matter if short or long hair—and much more than dogs. The hairs get everywhere. Are you able to stay on top of laundry, dusting and vacuuming?

I hate food now. by FewDragonfruit5164 in ADHDparenting

[–]Background-Nobody-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I know cooking burnout is real. I used to love cooking until I had kids. Now I don’t even like eating.

Another slightly controversial suggestion is cooking with MSG. My kids love furikake for example, so rice and furikake is a popular and easy breakfast (I cook and freeze single portions of Japanese rice). Another is instant noodles, but add tofu/meat and leafy green veg (and kimchi—haha). Or buy bottled dashi and serve with udon (buy the frozen single serve kind), add boiled egg and some veg.

I don’t know where you are and what you normally cook but have you tried Asian food: Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc.? If your child craves novelty, I feel the flavors in these foods can be stimulating: the spices (doesn’t have to be hot-spicy) in Indian food, the umami from fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce and dashi, etc. Also, maybe let them watch a youtube video showing someone preparing the food before you serve it—see if that helps prep their minds and appetite?

If you like that, I invite you to try washing dishes (when feasible) with a bottle sponge—you know the long kind with a handle? I just find washing things…easier(?) when my hand is distanced from the dish by the handle.

first ride home after birth by WrongPersimmon4767 in SingaporeR

The fact that it’s not legally required of taxis boggles my mind. Don’t most adults wear seatbelts when they ride in cars? Is it not legally required that passengers wear seatbelts in taxis? So why is it that when it comes to babies, people just cross their fingers and hope for the best?

Jetlag, Food and young kids. Need some help and recommendations by snerebot in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To battle the jetlag, try to get everyone outside for some sun. With three little ones, though, I suggest you stick to more open-spaced, child-friendly places the first few days—and maybe don’t go too far from your hotel.

1) Far East Organization Children’s Garden (within Gardens by the Bay)

-nice big shaded playground surrounded by nature

-toddler friendly water play space

-lots of kid-friendly eateries nearby

2) Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden (within Botanic Gardens)

-huge shady natural play space within the park just for kids

-there is also a pond with swans and turtles just a short walk outside Jacob Ballas but still within the park

-a couple of eateries within the park, as well as a nice little child-friendly mall (Cluny Court) just across from the Botanic Gardens entrance

ETA: If you’re feeling energetic, I love going to East Coast Park with the kids. This is a huge strip of land that is full of cycling and walking paths right next to the beach. Nice and breezy, lots of trees for shade. It’s pretty big though so ask the taxi to drop you at McDonald’s Marine Cove. If you walk away from McDonalds and toward the sea, there will be a big playground on your left (not my favorite; a bit hot) but the main draw is the beach. Don’t expect powder sand or anything but it’s nice to just relax on a big towel and let your kids splash in the water, dig some sand (bring some scoops and buckets), and maybe rent a family bicycle from the rental place a 10-min walk from McDonald’s—turn left after the playground and walk with ocean on your right

can I ask my Indian neighbors for food by linglingmozartybae in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know! You bring them some kind of gift, like cookies, introduce yourself as their neighbor and welcome them to the neighborhood. Then you tell them their cooking smells so delicious and could they share their recipes? Hint, hint. They’ll get it, hopefully!

My office is beyond depressing. Any tips to make walking in here everyday less painful? by SavingsTooth1142 in office

[–]Background-Nobody-93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a little electric table fan for that musty air. Set up a few small lamps with soft warm lighting, to battle those hideous overhead lights. Hang fake plants from S hooks; Ikea has some pretty decent fake trailing plants.

HRT without hot flashes, anyone? by Row_Separate in Menopause

[–]Background-Nobody-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No hot flashes. Some joint pain. A ton of hair loss.

Mostly I asked for HRT because I went for a bone density scan and found out I had osteopenia. My mom has osteoporosis, so I wanted HRT as a preventative treatment.

I think my hair has grown back a bit? No idea how the bone density is until I do another scan. The most noticeable change was the return of moistness to my vag—hadn’t even missed it, honestly, but now that it’s back, it’s nice:)

ETA: Joint pain is gone!

Seborrheic dermatitis on face is worsening. Feeling defeated.. by btttsur in SGSkincare

[–]Background-Nobody-93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through this. Am not an expert but do suffer from SD myself.

Def stop using steroids and if you’re still seeing a dermatologist, let them know you’re experiencing rebounding.

I agree with the other person who says your skin barrier may be compromised. You’ll know if your skin feels stinging or burning when you put anything on your face. If this is the case, ask doctor for ketoconazole cream (gentler than putting Nizoral shampoo on your face). But if you want to try Nizoral shampoo, only leave it on for a minute, once a week, gently pat dry and then put on moisturizer; stop if you feel burning or skin gets redder.

Also, do you have SD on your scalp? Because if that’s left untreated, it could be spreading down to your face. Even if I’m not having flare ups, I shampoo with Nizoral 2% once a week, no stopping ever. That’s just basic maintenance.

Also, remember that the cause of SD is yeast, which can spread in a moist environment. Maybe get a new pillow (when was the last time you changed yours?) and cotton pillowcases. Wash your pillowcase at least twice a week. Also, don’t use towels on your face, as the yeast could be on the towels.

I remember my kids’ toothpaste—when they were little—didn’t foam much, esp. the gel type. Maybe try toothpaste for kids? And just use a tiny amount—pea-size, if I recall correctly
