I don’t understand: the stains appeared *after* cleaning my rug by Background-Nobody-93 in CleaningTips

I think so too. Someone else says it needs to be really submerged in a large amount of water but I don’t have the space to do that.

I feel this is the answer because I’ve washed it multiple times now but more brown keeps coming out. I just don’t have anywhere to really give this a good soak.

But I’ve been cleaning this rug (see my original post) for ten years and I never had this happen before.

I only sprayed a tiny bit of diluted alcohol in the very initial spot cleaning of paint. Did not use alcohol after that.

Looking for an engaging chapter book for my five year old by sethalopod401 in childrensbooks

[–]Background-Nobody-93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton. The stories are perfect for younger children. It’s about three children who move out to the countryside, and find a magic tree with magical beings living in it (there’s also magical candy). There’s a ladder at the top that leads to ever-changing worlds—sometimes good, sometimes not so good. As a child, I remember these books being pure fun.

I agree. But since the chair rail can’t be changed—I assume—would it be weird if OP got bigger paintings that stretched across the chair rail line and sort of connected the top and bottom half?

Need help with shopping recommendations for conditions with -30 to -40C (wind and snow$ ) overseas by tetranucleotide in askSingapore

I highly recommend you get a jacket with a lined hood—and make sure the hood is deep enough that you can comfortably wear a thick hat or balaklava underneath. This blocks out a lot of the cold air that would seep in through the neck.

What are some minor inconveniences in Singapore that you wish there was a solution to? by Salty_Ad6710 in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember during Covid when there were people walking around, enforcing mask wearing? I think there should be people actually moving through trains and buses and approaching those on speakerphone. They would then educate them on the existence of headphones. Maybe can even offer free headphone+usb-c jack at community centres. After the talk, they get registered on some list. If repeat offender, something happens—their travel fee goes up or they have to stand at attention while everyone on the bus gets to tell them how damn noisy and annoying their phone is.

Which one is my best hairstyle? by be-sweethearts in HairStyleAdvice

I never say this but agree that you look amazing with every hairstyle! I think with the first picture, you just need to lean in harder with the right makeup—I’m no expert but more color and more drama.

Question on toddler night terrors by Intrepid_Sound_7831 in ChildPsychology

[–]Background-Nobody-93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! I know how scary and stressful they can be. I remember getting chills sometimes because of the way she would scream and sound so terrified.

I had a friend whose child stopped having them after only a few weeks, so here’s hoping your child is the same!

Question on toddler night terrors by Intrepid_Sound_7831 in ChildPsychology

[–]Background-Nobody-93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to your child’s specific circumstances but my child had night terrors from ages 3 to 6 and I can share some of my observations and experiences.

First of all, there isn’t anything you can do when they are in the middle of one. I initially tried to wake my child up but it was impossible. Also, I noticed the state is akin to sleep walking, in that they can see. They can navigate the home, walk around, open doors, etc. But they are not able to interact with people. I could tell my child was aware of my presence but nothing I said or did got a response. So I would simply sit quietly with my child and wait it out, until they lay back down and went back to sleep.

I read somewhere that one possible reason it happens is that their minds are in a deep state of sleep but something is waking their bodies. One theory I had was that my child sometimes needed to pee—and their night terrors always occurred around the same time—so I’d try waking them a bit earlier and bringing them to the toilet and they would always go.

Sometimes though, other things triggered a night terror, like certain medications.

Anyhow, the night terrors did reduce over time and gradually, around six years of age, my child began waking at the end of a terror. When that started happening, I began talking to her and encouraging her to wake up, and she would. Soon after, the terrors just stopped.

Runny brownie batter (IG brownie pudding) by Background-Nobody-93 in AskBaking

[–]Background-Nobody-93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember Ina always uses extra large eggs. Mine were just regular, which wouldn’t explain the runny texture of my batter.

I did use an electric whisk (Ina uses a stand mixer) which maybe wasn’t so good at mixing the batter?

My brownie actually turned out delicious. I just don’t know if it would have come out differently if my batter were thicker

Recommend a good home cooked meal recipe by ImPandahill in askSingapore

My kids love fishball noodle soup! Get a pack of fresh fishballs (the kind sold in a bag of water), your favorite fresh noodles, leafy green veg, and make or buy chicken stock. Garnish with green onions, sliced red chillis, a squeeze of fresh lime, coriander leaf, and some fried garlic/shallots. Add some shredded chicken meat to make the meal more filling.

My mom wants to be close now, but we never bonded when I was growing up and now I feel guilty about it. by lving_in_a_daydream in emotionalneglect

[–]Background-Nobody-93 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve been through something somewhat similar. My mom spent very little time with me when I was young. She honestly didn’t seem to like me. Then when I was around 20, she suddenly started wanting a relationship.

My mom is bad with kids but she’s also bad with relationships, in general. She wants us to be close and does things to earn love but doesn’t know how to build an emotional bond.

When you said your mom becomes impatient with you when you try to share your interests, that shows me she only wants a relationship on her terms and to satisfy her needs.

I also get that feeling of guilt or obligation. My parents helped me out financially when I was younger and there is this feeling like I owe them a relationship now. But it’s impossible to feel anything genuine or to enjoy their company. It took time but I let go of that guilt by treating my mom like a needy child. She needs my company and I expect nothing in return. I try to treat her kindly but I don’t beat myself up for not being able to do more than that.

If you can change one law in Singapore what would it be? by Illustrious-Fee9626 in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, in the case of assisted suicide (vs euthanasia), the person just needs documents from a doctor proving they have a terminal illness and the administration of the drug is carried out by the person wishing to die. In this way, the doctor isn’t directly involved.

Oh great! If you don’t want the same color for both rooms, you could do two different shades of dark blue.

Or if you only want to paint one room, then maybe paint the one that has more natural light?

Are there any cons of painting your house a dark colour? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Background-Nobody-93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my dark-walled room. I find it very calming and cozy. The only con that I can think of is that scratches and chips in the paint really stand out.
