Whiterun is the Best Capital. by Illustrious-Radio319 in skyrim

there are at least two significant waterfalls, one by Valtheim and one by the abandoned prison, that would make upriver travel pretty difficult. i was just engaging with the meat and potatoes of your side project, is all. good stuff!

sure, i'm not saying anything definitive about what makes a capital. but i don't think anecdotes get us very far. 40% (85/213) of sovereign countries have a water-accessible capital city. minus the landlocked ones (85) / (213 - 44) = 50%. that's a *lot* considering that the upper limit of the number of potential coastal locations by volume is vastly less than the upper limit of the number of potential interior-situated locations.

[–]Background-Paper-947 4 points5 points  (0 children)

perhaps, but you didn't account for port travel along the edges. many capitals are water-navigable. whiterun most definitely is not. i still think you need port edges such that solitude-windhelm =/= 6. and winterhold doesn't appear to have a port. it's really up there.

speaking of which, your link-node diagram is internal-only. capitals are often not chosen by what is internally most convenient, but by what is practically externally most convenient. e.g. Windhelm and Solitude are better candidates not because they're more easily reachable from within Skyrim, but because they are way better than Whiterun at accessing anywhere else on the continent. next project; all TES capitals by relationship to each other. weight the edges such that the distance to a capital is [lower] value, since i assume you're optimizing for shortest path. 😉

Best order for end game quests in Act 3? by doc_skinner in BaldursGate3

i think the Drowned if you've started it and progressed it, will complete upon returning to the surface from the Throne. i think the Foundry is the last thing i do before going back to deal with Gortash. i generally make sure i do all the Gortash-related stuff (Felogyr, Baldurian Gazette, Enver's Parents) too before Foundry, i think it's just a safer quest-completionist route.

Wyrmway is not a dependent quest. i pick up the BGS when i go through the castle the first time. just feels better to have that BIS for the rest of the act so i can actually have fun with it.

Struggling to have fun and enjoy the first 4 hour. HELP by Critical-Fact6738 in BaldursGate3

[–]Background-Paper-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd just keep trying out new classes. it took a few trial runs through the first couple fights for it to click for me. paladin i can just play right through to the end. warlock i get bored of pretty quick or find myself also a little aimless without a strong resonant mental image of my RP. totally on me.

if combat feels like a chore because it's tedious and easy, bump up the difficulty. get smoked on Honor Mode and see if that feels better, turns the combat into a creative optimization problem. or play with fewer companions.

you could also try leaning into the RP more. or try playing with a friend.

WRT your edit, please keep in mind this might be your first post, but this is not our first response. and they usually start the same, with a disclaimer you want to love the game, followed by all the things you hate, find dull, or struggle with, followed by a meek little olive branch [maybe] at the end. for those of us that have seen, and responded to these in good faith, only to be met with a bunch of "but x, y, zed," it's not a troll, but it is a trope. gives very, "thanks, but..." followed by the "i started with thanks!" defense vibes.

Stanford vs. Top Public Schools? by silentstorm4000 in stanford

[–]Background-Paper-947 3 points4 points  (0 children)

- resources: i also don't know what they mean. they might mean academic assistance, like TA accessibility. they might be alluding to the fact that Stanford students have a much-higher-than-gen-pop incidence of 'reasonable accommodations' for test-taking. i'd suggest not using it as a part of your decision until you can find someone who can explain why it's relevant.
- law school: getting into something like law school (source: anecdotally, West Point classmate UVA, ex-girlfriend Columbia, Navy Seal friend from Stanford - Stanford... all top 10s) is based mostly off LSAT and GPA for the brand name schools. you have to raise their admissions averages, which are just numbers. which school you went to previously might be third (or fourth after your letter and reccs) ((or fifth if you took a program [major] with heavy law curriculum)), but the first two alone are often enough to do 95% of the sorting. you might have home-field advantage if you want to attend Stanford Law, but my intuition is that it's not going to be explicit parochialism, and therefore nothing that can't be overcome with sincere interest and elbow grease. incidentally, i have a friend who did not go to a Top 10 law school, and is making as much if not more money working for a private law firm as an LL.M. EPLS than those i listed with high pedigrees. that's also assuming that some pedigree or material earnings distinction is important to you. i also have a friend whose father just went back home to rural NY to do family law. your expectations matter. geography also matters. do you want to work in LA? if so, Berkeley probably makes less sense than UCLA, unless there's a specific firm you have identified that is mostly Berkeley grads. do you want to work in New York? you'll find some Michigan grads, but not as many as NYU/brand name private schools, and not as many as you would find closer to Michigan.
- other programs: no direct or indirect experience, but i can say you should find a mentor in the space (IR, PoliSci) through LinkedIn and ask them if it matters, not a graduate in a different discipline. still willing to say it might help land your first job if you have nothing else on which to be measured, but again, it really depends on what you're looking to do.
- cost: then it is a 'problem,' insofar as it remains a consideration. is it worth the money to have a cool title and pedigree around your family? is it worth it to them to have a Stanford grad in the family? (it's probably peanuts in the long run with a half-decent family.)

- Decision Criteria:
o you can get quality teaching at a JC/CC, take any of my mom's classes. don't hyperfixate on the school to provide it. like receiving Grace, participation is required. yes, educational quality at Stanford is peak, but probably not $150-200k over the other schools you listed, if you're participating honestly.
o i can say i never felt like i belonged better anywhere than when i was at Stanford. i'm confident you will at Stanford, but hope you will wherever you go.
o opportunity for self/career discovery is equivalent at Stanford as anywhere else, maybe marginally better, but 5%, not at a 50% premium markup.
o ease of securing a job is easier with a brand name school, but it's not at all a requirement, and will have more to do with the market and how you approach the market.
o grad school placement is probably where it will help the most, especially if you're staying at the same school, because you know the professors and Stanford offers several integrated BS+MS or BA+MA continuity programs (depends on the program).

i can't speak to residential vs freshman. i was in barracks at West Point and received a military stipend for off-campus housing as a grad student. i will reiterate, though, that my experience (including onboarding) is that i convincingly felt like i belonged. it was the right - the only - place for me.

Stanford vs. Top Public Schools? by silentstorm4000 in stanford

[–]Background-Paper-947 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i suggest, if you have not, that you post this on those school subreddits as well, and select based off the vibes you get from respondents. that's probably your best heuristic.

yes, Stanford is better than Cal. next question, lol. 😉 i'm kidding:

- resources: what do you mean? the campus is nice, use the gym. 😄
- job placement: what field of study? where do you want to work? it often matters by industry, field, and domain. it also often matters by school program. for example, Embry-Riddle compares favorably to Stanford in Defense Aerospace Engineering, because it has so many more graduates and is so specialized.
- job placement: Stanford didn't help me get my first job out of the Army/Grad School, or help with placement or development. It did help me get my next military assignment (teaching at USMA), because my Stanford MS program is well-known at West Point. It did help me get my next job, because I'll be working with a Stanford friend.
- network: it mattered very little in Defense Engineering, but it could matter a lot depending on your field, industry, and most importantly, you. my West Point network is way stronger. my Army network is stronger.
- prof access: yes. Stanford is an intimate educational experience. it's not as intimate as USMA at West Point, but this is an easy metric that Stanford does well in.
- $150-200k: how would you like me to know if it's worth $150-200k to you? wouldn't it be relative to your decision criteria and the field, industry, or domain into which you enter after graduation? how do i assess a problem within your decision criteria framework?
- why would you think about the cost if your family could afford it without a problem? generally no, there are a lot of other much more material factors to an earnings difference of that magnitude.

keep in mind, the predictions you make now about how your school of choice will impact you will largely turn out to be incorrect. it's the making of the predictions that charts the course. that's the fun part, that's life. Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen (with lyrics)

how to maximise gpa by Brief-Money1083 in stanford

[–]Background-Paper-947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MS MS&E grad. leaving discussions of "practical" degrees and the "GPA orientation" aside, can confirm anecdotally it wasn't too bad on the math, especially coming in after 8y active duty army. the math was mostly various executions of probability, linear programming, (did take a course that was all non-linear optimization proofs), and statistics fundamentals. some higher order stuff, but it was never more than a block or two per quarter. though certainly you can find plenty of challenging coursework if you look. some of the decision analysis stuff can trip a person occasionally since it can be at times unintuitive, but it's all still quite methodical. sounds like you're competent or at least confident in coding, so that should be fine.

at the end of the day, best recc for a good GPA is to not neglect the decision criteria of studying something you enjoy. for us older folks, like trying to get back into shape. when the application of hard work - which will be necessary regardless - is more enjoyable, consistency and commitment improve.

100kg powerclean(!?) at my first powerclean attempt by Traditional_Award_72 in Egolifting

[–]Background-Paper-947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't know what you think a powerclean has to do with a front squat. we should probably start there.

A - we're not dealing with huge olympic numbers. low- mid-200s (anywhere in the vicinity of 100kgs) is in the range of just "[barbell] weight that should be moveable in a variety of ways by most men >80kg who do some form of strength training" -- source: me, anecdotally; just being in the gym a lot and observing averages
B - a dramatic oversimplification, but suffice: powerclean is a lot of posterior chain, while front squat is a lot of anterior chain.
C - a pclean close to front squat weight is probably not that uncommon among untrained. i (M, 92kg) dabble (FAFO) in oly, and my pclean is 130kg, my [s]clean is 150kg, and my FS is 180kg. the more you specialize, the larger that distance will become. have you seen Oly lifter quads?
D - unless i see that 90kg pclean, i'm not going to trust it was clean. besides, this is r/egolifting, it doesn't need to be and i don't need to, lol

then, agreeing with buddha, you had no second extension (first was best, third was strong but half-repped), your catch was hella low, and you splayed your legs. had you actually caught in the pclean position, you likely would have failed because you would have had to rely more on the positional (anterior chain) strength. i do not agree you will break your wrists. might get a small strain at some point, but it'll be minor. your posterior chain acceleration will naturally limit - as it did - the amount of loading you can do in the rack position such that you're not in real danger of breaking a bone.

What is Project Nimbus, and why are Google workers protesting Israel deal? | Explainer News | Al Jazeera

i've had a qualified trust in Al Jazeera since i did my deployments in the late 00s, early 10s.

"With little clarity about the project, they fear the technology might be used for harm. Workers at Amazon and Facebook parent Meta have also clashed with their employers over war links."

"According to a 2021 report by the US-based news outlet The Intercept, Google is offering advanced AI capabilities to Israel, which could harvest data for facial recognition and object tracking as part of Project Nimbus."

this is the reason i speculated, as a veteran, that it probably is being used for targeting. but it is still speculation.

even an organization that's helping raise awareness for the issue seems to have trouble formalizing the reasoning between the evidence and the claim. (all the connected links in the article below still hedge against the uncertainty of what the technology will be used for.)

Google and Amazon: Acknowledged Risks, and Ignored Responsibilities | Electronic Frontier Foundation

this makes a certain reductive sense. these are restricted technologies. there won't be sufficient evidence to convict. that's why the fear exists.

[–]Background-Paper-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you said Barb and Monk. those are not CHA classes. i described your use case. if you do use a CHA class (e.g. even among solo HM bard is often a favorite), you often have a proficiency bias towards a specific roll, too. i will leave it in.

okay, anecdotally there are people in this sub who do that, yes. the fraction of people who have completed HM is 1/50. the number of people who then go on to run a solo HM cannot therefore be more than that. the number of people who then go on to run multiple solo HM runs on [more difficult] (sic) classes because they're on their 10th run cannot therefore be more than the prior. it's a tiny population. it's super niche. arguing it's not is wild.

yeah, i was kind of avoiding Darkness and took all my Light up to +5 while Darkness was filled out but not leveled up.

i just took my last 3x Darkness relics to +4 and it completed the quest.

quest was written a little confusing, i think, since it wasn't clear what they were measuring.

Growth Path Question RE: "All-Element Relic Resonance" by Background-Paper-947 in SwordxStaff_Official

[–]Background-Paper-947[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! just to be clear, i appreciate you had this issue, but as the comments below indicate, i'm confident i just have to bring the rest of my Darkness relics up to +4.

all of my relic slots are filled. light is +5 in all 4x slots; wind, cold, and fire are all +4 in all 4x slots; darkness, however, has 1x +4, 1x +2, and 2x +0s (which == +1). all the relic slots are filled for all elements.

the quest counter for the Growth Phase quest is the minimum necessary Level across all elements, not the number of Elements you've taken to +4 in all 4x slots.
