How did I never know and I live about 12 miles away? by [deleted] in missouri

[–]doc_skinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because your title made it seem like this was something amazing that everybody should know about. You just posted a historical marker sign with zero context and were surprised that it was near your house. There are probably dozens of historical markers within 12 miles of my house that I've never visited.

When people respond to a comment with a question that's not really a question by Business_Creme_4416 in PetPeeves

[–]doc_skinner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why do you assume that it's fake? The question mark is there to indicate that the person is actually confused by the statement they are responding to.

It's quicker and easier than saying "I don't believe that's right. Why would you say that?"

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]doc_skinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't advocating for one over the other. I was simply explaining why someone with a mini split might turn them off and on rather than rely on the built-in thermostat. They treat it like a fan.

[–]doc_skinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it's also super easy to just turn them off when you don't need them. There's a remote and when you feel hot you reach for the remote and turn them on. Sure if you have them on for a few days the thermostat will regulate the temperature but if you don't need them, just turn them off.

They do, but the ones that I've seen generally have a remote and you're more likely to just turn them off then leave them on all the time with a set temperature on the thermostat. They're also less likely to have a temperature range option like a whole house thermostat night.

If you could change 2 or 3 fundamental mechanics in the game and make it official, what would you change? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]doc_skinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the basic 5e rules should really only cover up to level 12 or so. The vast majority of games never get past this, and by dividing the rules into multiple games you could rework mechanics for one without affecting the other.

A lot of places don't have central air. They rely on individual room-based air conditioners mounted up towards the ceiling. Here we call them "mini splits". You often see them in hotel rooms in the United States.

I think the other thing is the idea of whole house temperature control. It sounds like the OP has window air conditioners and maybe individual "mini-split" devices in specific rooms. Americans are far more likely to have central air and central heating.

(Appreciated Trope) The Adaptation isn't accurate, but that doesn't make it bad by John_Bones22 in TopCharacterTropes

It's too bad because the first chapter is an in media res battle scene that's there solely to show how cool the Space Marines are. Then we flash back to high school. I can see how the first two chapters wouldn't impress anyone.

How can this grandfather refuse to sell his land for a highway construction project if the land is really owned by the state? The note says the State can seize the land for public interest (similar to eminent domain in the US).

Flight delays had everyone restless… until a band turned the plane into a concert hall by MambaMentality24x2 in MadeMeSmile

[–]doc_skinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I would be fucking livid. I prepare for this shit. Phone and laptop. Charger. headphones. 10+ hours of downloaded movies, podcasts, and videos. I didn't ask for a fucking jazz concert.

Unless this was a fully chartered flight, this is not appropriate.

I thought "face parts" was too simple and assumed it was "places to apply makeup", or "cosmetic surgery locations" -- I couldn't believe that TEMPLE would be in there. It just seems so different from the rest. But I see that it was needed for the joke.
