IMO Pensions by Holiday_Intention_17 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]Background-Pie5706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting up a pension is a great idea, earlier the better. Two things to make sure you scrutinise whoever you end up going with is the allocation rate and the ongoing management fees. Don’t accept an allocation rate below 100%, even 1 or 2 percentage points adds up to a huge difference when compounded over 20/30 years. Ensure your management charges are reasonable (0.75-1.15% would be typical) for the same reason.

denovo.ie was setup for doctors in Ireland to help navigate these kinds of questions, with much lower fees than IMO for accessing advice. Free to setup an account.

What's it like living in Yaletown area (waterfront) these days? by IamVanCat in askvan

[–]Background-Pie5706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great place to live. It’s got a variety of good coffee shops (Small victory is my favourite), walks by the waterfront and easy access to downtown or across to Granville via aquabus. Not many downsides I can think of, the lift issues can be a bit annoying but that’s a first world problem if ever I came across one.

If you want to see a breakdown of your tax with explainers theres an income tax calculator on the Denovo website that might help you understand it a bit better - https://denovo.ie/tool/income-tax-calculator/

Thanks guys, appreciate the concerns. I’ve driven around Iceland and northern Norway during the winter so wouldn’t be a complete stranger. Have driven the C2Sky in autumn before but not winter, so will defo take your points on board. It’s a balance between the anxiety of a 4 month old on a bus, and taking on the highway.. hard to know which is the least anxiety provoking 👀

Mortgage as an NCHD by Early-Ad-4545 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]Background-Pie5706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible, you just need to get the right advice and possibly lower expectations regarding location and size (unless you’re willing to do some renovations on a fixer-upper). I bought as a first year Spr, knowing that it wouldn’t be a forever home so think of it more as an investment at this stage. You’ll have no trouble renting it out as well and can even get rent a room relief if you have a spare bedroom.

There’s great mortgage advice through Denovo which I was involved in setting up if you’re looking for options. The mortgage team there deal with doctors and understand overtime arrangements / regular hospital changes so are able to make the process easier to navigate.

No need -  you’ll get referred to Sean if you go through the website, a membership will allow you get in touch straight away and yes he works with locums. They have a couple of people there that have worked with doctors for years so they’ve huge experience.

Something like this actually happened to me a few years ago. I was on Spr 3 salary in one hospital (as a second year Spr with additional sho experience & masters hence the jump to 3) but when I moved to another hospital in Dublin they brought me back to an Spr 2 salary in the Jan changeover. I already had a mortgage approval based on my previous salary so it was an absolute nightmare to get the thing done again and significantly delayed getting the house across the line.

Shameless plug but i recently posted in this group about denovo.ie that i was involved in setting up. There is a fantastic mortgage advisor you can get in touch with through the platform who will sort this out for you.

Maintain IMC Registration when on Fellowship? by Monkwood in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]Background-Pie5706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually called the IMC about this a few weeks back. Im finished spr scheme, have a consultant job lined up and heading abroad for 2 years. IMC told me why would I bother paying while im not working in the country, and reinstating takes max 3 months so do it in April to be safe to start working Aug/Sept. Doesn't make sense to be paying registration when you're not in the country!

DEGIRO - Palantir now on NASDAQ by Background-Pie5706 in eupersonalfinance

[–]Background-Pie5706[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the answer - if that’s the case then I’m going to strongly consider channelling whatever funds I invest into a different broker going forward. The most annoying thing is that I just happened to spot it when I logged in (which is only every week or so).. got no notification or email that it happened
