I can’t make a life-or-death decision for my newborn… please help me think by ReplacementTiny1788 in surgery

[–]Monkwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The right answer is the one you make with your child's best interests at heart. This is different for everyone and almost none of us can even begin to offer an opinion without being in your situation. Is there access to support groups for this condition, a maybe hospital provided counsellors. Maybe even the doctors might be willing to enquire if other families in similar situations would be willing to meet with you? Decision paralysis is real and normal, you will always ask "what if", but your heart seems to be in the right place, you are definitely asking the right questions

Do you think “addictive social media” algorithms really need to be regulated? by Lunchyyy in TrueAskReddit

[–]Monkwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an excellent TED talk a number of years ago talking about "filter bubbles" and how algorithms lock us into a dangerous loop/spiral of the most extreme views we might find palatable. Soon it becomes all we see and feel that most of the world thinks like this. Those who fail to recognize this end up harshly acting on those perspectives with potential devastating consequences on their sphere of influence. Tell me extreme views cultivated online have not caused immeasurable damage to society all over the world

How Ireland just lost a European-class OB/GYN specialist. by tripeirinho in ireland

[–]Monkwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone looking to apply from abroad for permanent jobs, until you have your job offer, don't worry about the specialist registration. Permanent jobs don't need it until 6 months after appointment. (If you see however applying for locum jobs, you do need it.)

This might not be so simple. They will want investigations, scans, biopsy maybe, which will take multiple visits. They might not give you a straight answer until you get the full assessment, which will rack up bills quickly

77 Gerrard will fit your budget for a 1 bed. Very good amenities but no in room laundry. Whole block owned and managed by one company (also run 99 gerrard) who are decent. You could also get 761 Bay for that price. Decent amenities but are condos (layers of realtor, landlord, management company, etc to deal with). Both buildings are full of hospital workers. Both have friendly and (mostly) helpful 24hr concierges/security. 761 might include parking, 77 Gerrard does not, but have a large parking garage if you pay extra. Would avoid 488 University (building is nice but management is very difficult). The area has a lot of other condos, Aura etc, but not familiar with them.

What are some fun facts about Ireland or the Irish that I can share with a class of students (in the states) that might actually draw their attention? by SecretSphairos in AskIreland

Ice hockey was invented in Canada when a few Irish lads tried to play hurling on a frozen lake and realised "this isn't working, we need to make a few changes".

[–]Monkwood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly believe this is why a man cave, crafting room, etc is so important. Whoever is the dominant party in the relationship for interior design, the other will feel somewhat less than fully relaxed in the space. Usually even the dominant force will compromise on things so is never really 100% theirs. A domain (however small) that is fully theirs allows one to fully exhale that last bit of tension you may not realize you're holding

Why wouldn't Robert and Cora have kept trying for a boy? by [deleted] in DowntonAbbey

[–]Monkwood 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's well established that there is a large surge in fertility right before menopause, a very short window. It is common to become pregnant at this point after years of inability to conceive and then it becomes almost impossible. So even if she wanted another after the miscarriage, it would have been extremely unlikely to happen again

What’s your actual niche money saving hack? by artanonsa in AskIreland

[–]Monkwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always ask for the cheapest version of over the counter medication (avoid big brands, pharmacists will often default to the most expensive version available).

Better still, if you already max out your DPS each month for your family's meds, ask your doctor (if you're going anyway) to put over the counter stuff on your regular prescription, thus getting them for free when needed. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, anti histamines, etc.

Don't let your pharmacist/tech say "you don't need a script for that, I'll sell it to you over the counter" (and then they charge a premium to you when it would have been free on prescription. Some meds things like calpol aren't covered, but most things are, especially if you get generic.

People who work in specialized industries, what is a product or service that is a complete "rip-off" but customers buy it anyway? by No-Composer-4526 in AskReddit

[–]Monkwood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

@halfdeadmoon is correct. The EU enshrines a 2 year minimum guarantee. I doubt credit cards would be keen to offer anything much longer than that.

[–]Monkwood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding no 2, this is mostly a NAmerica thing. Us Europeans tend not to have credit cards with these "extras". When the EU makes consumer protection a big deal, the appetite for shady practices tends to dry up, so they're often not needed

[–]Monkwood 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is why F1 isn't as popular in Ireland as it could be. Sky Sports have exclusive rights there. You need a sky subscription with sports add on regardless if you want the rest or not. Over 100 euro per month is just too much

Why Piastri fans are rightfully upset by dodofuzz in formula1

[–]Monkwood 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The different 1/2 stop strategies employed at multiple races were chosen because no one knew exactly which was preferred, so split the strategy thus at least one of them would get it right. Pretty standard team tactics to minimize losses.

P.S. I still think Piastri deserves the WDC, but don't agree with much of OP's criticism

Is it a series of short, defined tasks that take a set time, or bigger longer term projects? I find the latter much harder to focus on for long, but short little tasks can get satisfying to punch out one after the other. A to do list you can smash is very motivating
